When football dies

Sorry if this sounds completely miserable. I’ve being thinking about where football will be in 10 years time? The ever growing gap between the premier league and the rest of us, at what point will the bubble burst and teams just start disappearing, being unable to afford to compete or even operate?

Rather then drag out some long winded depressing paragraph I’ll simply ask you this, should Derby cease to exist and there be two leagues left in English football, your nearest local club being someone like Leicester ruddy city, do you give up on football?

Probably. or rather still follow it, but it'd never really be the same.

Given i live in Scotland these days, the natural transition would be to support the nearest (non-old firm) team, so probably Partick thistle for me, however, in the doomsday you're thinking of, god only knows what state scottish football would be in.

Yes.

Always hated Fester.

Will go non-league and watch Mickleover.

Do you have kids?  The future depends on whether they will still want to support a local team though not much think and a lot of thin.  I suspect that will not be the case and the powers in charge will get what they want with a smaller number of better supported teams.  Lower leagues will be used as feeder clubs and I do fear promotion and relegation will be scrapped

I said in 1984 that if Derby go to the wall I'd never go to another match, nothing has changed for me.

I said that I would get a season ticket for the away end at the City Ground, but realistically I'd have done what you said. Maybe the odd game with friends, but without the passion it wouldn't be the same.

I actually drove past Mickleover Sports ground on Saturday afternoon while match was on and thought. “If I don’t get a season ticket due the pride park carnage then maybe I’ll just cycle here when I feel like and have a couple of beers at the Great Northern before hand”.

Dont think I would travel out of the city to watch any other big side.

Anyone watched MS much? Is it worth a look?

My interest in football waned many years ago. Hardly ever watch a match if it doesn’t involve Derby. Can’t even get up for England international games anymore. Football has been ruined by money. I wouldn’t support any other team.

I agree with this entirely.

Football won't be going anywhere, especially as worldwide interest seems to be predominantly focused towards the Premier League as the primary league of choice - which in turn reaps the rewards for the Football League who do love a good handout.

I can imagine that one day a closed Premier League, with two divisions, will be next major movement in the English football. Two divisions because of the interest relegation battle generates, but without the severe financial drop off from being relegated into the Football League.  I believe that's why they've reorganised the Premier League 2 (U23) in that manner to use it as a guinea pig for first-team football.

It would focus the mind of the Football League, who could promote the league as national league for the everyday fan. In all honesty, there would be a negotiation with the Premier League whereby the handouts would be insane to keep the league running. It would keep a lot of clubs in business and would remove the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow which would focus the minds on making the league about community. Saturday 3pm kick off games... the way football once was.

The Premier League on its current trajectory is a different beast and would no doubt be able to reach out and even take up international games - which is obviously the direction it's going in. It's not an ideal situation, but whilst the Premier League is the most watched league in the world then it's only correct it does everything possible to increase revenues that can be passed down the Football League pyramid, all the way to grassroots, to ensure the health of football in this country.

In the current situation, the severe financial issues that plague relegated clubs should they not bounceback is huge. it's also creating a gulf in the division that makes it unsustainable. Personally, I could live with being in a 'national league' type set up where games are catered for the local supporters and not an international audience. I guess the Football League would then have to try and cater to new supporters, create a much better product of their own.

I love football. Love to play it, to watch it, to listen to it in the car. And the team that I love are Derby County. If they were to cease, I think a Phoenix club would rise in its place. It would be a bit crap, but would give that a go. I could watch football still, but the joy would be gone. It wouldn’t mean as much.

It won’t die but it needs restructuring

It’s been 30 years since the PL was formed and in that time only seven clubs have won it. Two of those were Leicester and Blackburn and the latter is unlikely to repeat it

I’m exactly the same as I-Ram, international breaks piss me off, they either disrupt momentum or hinder putting a bad performance behind you. Actual international matches are now of pretty much no interest as I think too many run of the mill players are getting chosen.

If Derby County ceased to be I couldn’t follow anybody else, it would be unthinkable. OMG what would happen to this forum ? ?

Professional football? Yes. Outside of Derby County I've largely lost interest anyway. Go watch Belper Town if I need a football fix.

100% agree with this.

I gave up on international friendlies ages ago but It struck me this summer that I wasn't even that arsed about England in the Euros and realised I didn't actually know much about that many of the players.

No offence & obviously things are far from rosy at the minute but seen a few of these posts recently & its doing my head in. To deal with the two suggestions;

1. Only cash-rich/existing Premiership teams can compete anymore

Well, we thought that for much of 2000-2015 and then Leicester happened. And Leeds rose from the dead. And Brentford's shrewd model won them promotion. And Swansea and Wigan won major trophies. In a divisional system progress is always possible & but like it ever was, it needs consistently good decision making, good appointments to manage the football club as a whole & a long term plan. Not the short term 'boom or bust'/celebrity chasing/chuck a load of cash at it nonsense we've specialised in for all bar 2010-14

2. Derby will cease to exist so what do you do then

There will always be a club in Derby...always. Even if the absolute worst case scenario happened which I think is so unlikely as not to worry about, there are the examples of Glasgow Rangers, Wimbledon, Napoli & Fiorentina to look at. Bury will return in time too. The point here is that the fans are the club, not its legal entity

This is a one club city & a city that is passionate about football. There 100% would be a phoenix club & in time it'd be seen as a continuation of the old club - the idea we'd even consider supporting the bindippers for a second makes me vom in my mouth

Hopefully the Forum would continue in some form. I feel a lot closer to, and care more for, this community than I do the club at the moment.
