Unless I'm missing something, he is right, he has to do more otherwise he will continue to be on the bench. He will have told him exactly the same face to face, there is no surprise in what he is saying.

If he gets asked what any player needs to do to get a starting place, I'm sure he will give the same answer to that as well.

But why single him out, a lot of the players on the pitch for longer than him did nothing....

I have no idea what effort Sibley is putting in to improve and impress in training but Wayne and the coaches do. They have constantly said you need to put the work in on the training pitch to get into the team.

He is also suffering from the same thing that Max Bird is in that they are now a known quantity and teams are not going to give them the same space and time to work in. It happens to a lot of players in the season after they break through they now need to vary their game more to get the opposition guessing what they will do.

Young Louise Watson is benefiting from being a new name and is getting the space no longer afforded to Sibley.

He must think Sibley can take it and will improve as a result of the criticism. I have no idea if it'll work but he certainly knows the lad better than any of us on this forum so I'd wager there is some logic behind it.

I hope Sibley can take it. It must be very tough for him playing out of position, seeing Watson get praise for being brought in to play centrally when this is Sibley's position but he's never selected to show what he can do there. Yet last season he showed us how good he was playing centrally. It's a very weird one on Rooney's part.

Just to say as well it's not the first time he has said it, just a couple of weeks ago when he was asked what was needed for him to get a starting place.

"Sibs is very much part of the first-team squad. I think, like all the players, you need to play well when you get your chance in the first-team to show what you can do. Sibs has had a few chances over the last few weeks and we feel he can do a bit better than what he’s been doing."

People are being a bit over-sensitive here. Rooney was asked about Sibley specifically and answered. He didn’t ‘single him out’.

He’s right to as well if he knows what Sibley can produce but isn’t doing so in training or when he comes on.

Today he’s had 20 mins and was anonymous as anyone else other than missing a good chance from a corner. If you’re a sub you’ve got to go on and do something different, otherwise there’s no point going on.

I’m of the opinion that he’s due a couple of starts because those starting ahead of him aren’t delivering. But if the manager thinks he will respond to a kick up the backside, then time will tell if he’s right.

It's also worth noting what he actually said

He also said this about the other forwards.

WR here. Very critical of the forwards today: “They have to want to score a goal. They need better movement. A desire to get across their man. We put some really good balls in today but our forwards...wasn’t good enough today.”

Bird/Knight/Sibley could have 30+ games under their belts this season as a midfield 3, well on their way to becoming the most exciting partnership in the league. Watson coming through.

In that parallel universe would we have done any worse than we've done this season?

Instead we've got Knight being played all over the pitch and out of form, Bird and Sibley rotting on the bench.

We should do the decent thing and sell all three of them cheap to a club that knows how to use them.

Do any worse ? I'm convinced we'd be on more points....

WR Englands highest goal scorer, Played with and against some of the worlds greats, Played for probably the greatest PL manager in history...how frustrating it must be for him to see a young talent in Sibley unable to fullfill a talent that WR and Co see in training every day.

He must coach him, Talk to him, Show him, Sibley either takes all this on board or he'll end up being just a footballer instead of a good footballer.

Some folk really do get upset.

Or WR, everything you said above ... unable to see that in order to win games of football you need your most creative players on the pitch   - from the first whistle, not when you're already losing.

Yes, we do.

What's really really odd about these comments is Sibley gets what 5 minutes here, 5 minutes there shoved out wide and even when he does start and does well (Thinking of the Birmingham game particularly) he's prone to getting dropped anyway. What's he supposed to do ? Why is the onus on him to do something the minute he gets on the pitch but several players don't produce anything for weeks running and yet get pick regardless of form ?

If one forward player isn't performing to their standards then it's on them, if all of them aren't then the problem lies elsewhere.....

Sibley has shown what he can do, but that was last season, this season he has not shown anything that deserves a starting place. People have been asking why he hasn't been starting and he confirms this is the reason, same people then get upset at him saying this...priceless ?

I think we overrate him because he is one of our own and a young prospect. Every young player that comes through our fans over rate.

Giles Barnes, Will Hughes, huddlestone and bennett when he came through. Some have been talented some not as much but everyone of them over hyped.

Sibley is a prospect. He dives into challenges over eager & gives away silly free kicks. Saying that id rather him play over waghorn. Id also rather see players in their best positions. Round pegs in round holes
