  1. I can't see any realistic way how that could possibly be true. If the multiple bidders part is true, then that's good news, I just hope Mel is able to get a credible buyer this time.

However I really cannot see the EFL even being able to hint at reducing whatever punishment we receive if Mel sells up quickly. Firstly, there is no indication that we would definitely get a points deduction, it's just one of numerous possibilities. Secondly, the points deduction is not something that can, or should, be made up on the spot. As much as they may like to, the EFL Gods cannot sit in their Ivory tower and think "hmm, Mel Morris? We'll hit him with the maximum penalty!" purely because he's caused a stir in the past and there's ill feeling. Penalties are based on facts. It can't be impacted by having a favourable, or unfavourable owner.

The Club should be sold for the good of the Club. I really hope being stung twice publicly will encourage Mel to really want to choose the best person for our future, however the indication that he could almost be blackmailed into rushing a sale through so we only get deducted 3 points rather than 9 for example, is absolutely farcical and sounds like it should be illegal.

  2. Sensible ownership is exactly what we need right now. No frills, no bragging, no arguing on Twitter, no claims of Champions League football and recruiting by typing in caps on Instagram comments.

I think this ties in with the previous theory that other parties were waiting on our fate, league wise, before making a move. Rightfully or wrongfully, Mel may have sided with offers which would've given him x amount of £ without the guarantee of us being a Championship side.

I'm glad we seem to finally be pushing Alonso aside, my opinion is he'd have been an absolute embarrassment and utter disaster. Let him go find another toy to lust over through a shop window. Unfortunately when he goes to the counter and only has buttons to pay for it, then he'll probably find himself in this same situation.

  3. If we do eventually get a points deduction, even if it is only 2 or 3 points, then Steve Gibson has kept us in the division.

His meddling and throwing his toys out of the pram delayed the verdict by at least 5 months, only for all of his crying to be thrown out and no wrongdoing proved. This means that any deduction we may get would have been applied to the season that’s just finished rather than the next season.

Whatever happens, and as disappointing as it is, it’s still absolutely hilarious that Mr Gibson has done nothing but help us, and the bill for the honour will be footed by every other club.

    Thanks Steve, now run along.

  4. The sad thing is, while this takeover deal is still “on”, whenever Alonso embarrasses himself, it embarrasses us.

Once we know the outcome of the appeal and the future is a lot more clear, there must be more parties that are interested. It’s been mentioned by journalists in the past that various parties are waiting in the wings. It’s immediately more credible for a party to come forward with an offer once they knew if we would be Championship or League One, and when they know what deduction or fine we face.

I would much rather have a group of owners who are willing to bide their time and consider them circumstances than a chancer who hopes they can fluke their way through the tests and get to the reigns first.

The plug absolutely has to be pulled on this deal by Mel. We’ve got enough bad publicity at the moment, let alone by making more for ourselves by entertaining embarrassments like Erik Alonso, and trying to invite him into our house.

Looking at the replies to that everyone wants us down.

Can you blame them? Especially if what is read by supporters of other clubs are just the endless negative articles written about us by various papers.

It wasn't so long ago that everyone was rooting for us in a play-off final over a "cheating" QPR. Now the tables have turned. There's always the animosity towards the clubs that have splashed the cash to get up but failed, rather than those who were successful as they stuck two fingers up to the rules on the way up.

Lots of praise for teams like Leicester, Villa, Wolves etc in recent seasons for how they've done in the Premier League, with very little mention that they bent the same, or similar rules as we have apparently broken to get there. They were successful with it, we weren't. We're the ones who are vilified.

Can understand why some are saying we should take an (estimated) 6 point deduction on the chin, just so that we can move on and be done with all this nonsense...

...but is that the same 6 point deduction that eventually saw Sheffield Wednesday get relegated? I'm not sure I'd trust this management team to keep us up if we started on 0 points, let alone -6!

Sheffield Wednesday were hit with 12 points though which is a key point. If we got a 12 deduction we’d be right up against it too.

SWFC have a right to be very aggrieved. The difference in recruiting players based on that deduction, and the mentality around the club had to be impacted by that.

Six points would be manageable if it allows us to move on and get recruitment sorted. Even with our current squad and coaching staff, ‘poor’ form would’ve seen us more than 6 points clear. It just so happened we had abysmal form and stayed up by 1 point instead.

I wonder where all these ITK rumours are coming from.

Certain posters were ITK when we had a certain person high up at the club, but lost it when he left.

Now, rumours are that he wants back in at the club, and the ITK’ers have chirped up again?

    Hmmmmm.

    Good point well made Boycie!

That's what I am saying. Surely taking six points and moving on is better than fighting over it all summer and jeopardising a whole lot more points by not being able to plan?

I would take anything up to 6; any more and we should fight it (if we are allowed to.)

I can't believe that I am typing that because I think the EFL are bang out of order in what they have done, especially the way it has dragged on and already affected us BUT they seem determined to make an example of us sooner or later, so I think we need to get on with it.

You'd think their ridiculous FFP/ P&S rules have got to change soon, or as @Ambitious says, there will just be a procession of clubs falling foul of them every season.

It’s a ridiculous system and does the exact opposite of something that’s financially fair is meant to do. Clubs are overspending to match sides with parachute payments in the hope they can get promoted and then live off parachute payments if they come back down.

Yet if you are successful in reaching your goals, you can’t be punished, not unless you come back down at least. And even then the benefits still outweighed the punishment.

Okay, from the reporting by more responsible journalists, it seems likely that the EFL have won their appeal, but that any punishment (fine or points deduction) will apply next season.

Anyone else think we should just take it on the chin and move on now?

I want us to put all this legal crap behind us sooner rather than later.

At least we'll know where we stand at the start of next season and can get on with winning some games of football.

It depends really. If for example, we get a 6-point deduction this week, like SWFC got and take it on the chin, then things can move forward.

If we can get a takeover sorted and recruitment rolling, I hope it wouldn’t impact too negatively on our season. I’d like to thing if we plan properly we can muster a squad capable of finishing at least 6 points above the relegation zone - which ultimately would be the target again.

However, we could rumble on all summer with uncertainty or appeals that hold up things like takeover deals and recruitment, and arguably be in a worse position even without a points deduction.

The key thing will be timing, however it won’t take away from the fact that the EFL are an inept organisation that aren’t fit for purpose.

  10. Absolutely pathetic. More ineptitude from the EFL. If we were to be relegated out of this league into a non-EFL one, then it wouldn’t be the end of the world. Unfortunately we’ll just end up being amongst a group of clubs the organisation care even less about.

They can appeal a decision until they get the result they want, but once that happens it’s final?

We may as well just give up with real life football and move to video games. At least we can keep reloading that so results favour us for a change.

  11. Christian Walton would be a good option on a free for a long-term GK option.

He's 25, played plenty of football really considering how few games some PL back-ups can actually play! Two seasons at this level so far. Marshall's career is winding down. I thought he was very good at the start of the season, however he was only brought in with one or two seasons in mind. He's since been dropped a couple of times for Roos, who is not good enough for this level and never will be.

It would make sense to bring someone in who can either stay as our #1 for years to come, or command a decent fee if he has a couple of good seasons behind him.

  12. I would agree with the OP. The name was obviously based as a joke following on from when we started being referred to as Frank Lampard's Derby County, and now Wayne Rooney's instead.

If he was doing well, and there were a vast amount of support for him, then fair enough. However it appears as if the consensus is that Rooney's dismissal would be met quite favourable by the majority of the board. The name is better off being changed whether he remains our manager or not.

  13. If Alonso doesn’t take over, which I think will be a blessing, then can we do things a little differently next time?

Is it possible to get proof of funds and the fit & proper test done before announcing the agreement publicly? Two announced takeovers which vanish into thin air is embarrassing enough, let alone any more.

My hope is now we are confirmed to be a Championship club again next season, and start level with the other 23 clubs, other waiting parties may be willing to come forward. It should be an exciting proposition once fan restrictions are lifted. Especially given the fact that it’s almost a complete fresh start on the pitch.

So, like you, I hope that we do not play for a draw on Saturday because they need a plan that includes playing to score goals.

Personally, I think that the biggest problem in a crunch match like this, is that it tends to require defensive tactics.

The reason why I don't want us to play for a draw, is because we're playing an opponent who absolutely have to win. If we were playing a mid-table side with nothing to play for, and knew a draw would still keep us safe, then maybe that would be the right plan.

However, I have not seen anything from this current set of players or coaching staff which suggests we would be able to set-up and have the mentality and organisation to stay firm for an entire 90 minutes. Us trying to hold back an onslaught of pressure is going to result in a goal conceded at some point, and then what? We suddenly have to do something that we also aren't very good at, clawing our way back in to a game.

When we're drawing, there's too many ways the table can swing rapidly out of our favour in the blink of an eye. If we can win this game then we don't need to worry about anybody else. I don't want to be level with Sheffield Wednesday and constantly checking to see if Rotherham have taken the lead in Cardiff for the whole game. That might happen in the 89th minute, and then we give ourselves no time to win our own game.

Worry about ourselves first rather than trying to do the bare minimum please.

  15. So we know that a point *might* not be enough for us on Saturday now. I posted before that in a way, it might help our preparations in some way than knowing a draw will definitely do.

I hope we go out to win. Playing for a draw when a loss definitely sends you down is far, far too risky. It will backfire. At least if we go out to win, and Rotherham get turned over by Cardiff, then we'd have at least a two-goal buffer between us and League 1.

Sheffield Wednesday and Rotherham now both know they have to win, anything less and they're down. Both also know that they could win and still go down. I'm not sure who will be feeling the pressure more to be honest.

I'd rather be in wednesday's position I think, been told they're down but have put together a run to give themselves a chance. On the other hand we have dropped like a stone to the point where safety is now in absolute peril.

You’d rather be in Wednesday’s position?!

They could beat us 4-0 and still go down. Depending on tomorrow’s result, we might not even need to score a goal to stay up.

No matter how poor we’ve been and how low confidence is, we definitely hold an advantage over Sheff Wed, and possibly over Rotherham too.

  17. 2 hours ago, Tamworthram said:

Of course the downside of a Rotherham draw is that Wednesday will know all they can do is beat us and hope Rotherham don’t beat Cardiff. The margin of their victory over us would be irrelevant. So, arguably, if they went a goal up they could shut up shop, hang on for a narrow win and hope for a favourable result at Cardiff. Whereas, either a Rotherham win or defeat will mean they know goal difference may come into play. They might need at least a seven goal swing in their favour in Rotherham won one and lost one which isn’t completely out of the question. This would mean really going for it against us which could leave them exposed to the counter attack. Fortunately for them, they’re only playing Derby so the risk would be low ?

I think, on balance, a Rotherham defeat has got to be the best outcome on Tuesday.

Yeah of course, a Rotherham loss is what we want as the margins are going to be so fine.

I just hope we don’t end up shooting ourselves in the foot if we know at 12:30 on Saturday that a single point will guarantee survival. If we play for a point, I don’t think I’ll be able to watch the last 10 minutes if the scores are still level. I genuinely think that would be more gut-wrenching than any play-off final.

  18. To be honest, a Rotherham draw isn’t necessarily the worst thing mentality wise for us.

If Rotherham lose on Tuesday, then it’s back in our hands, with us only needing a point to guarantee safety. A Rotherham draw means we can stay up by getting a point, but it’s not guaranteed. The only way to ensure we stay up is to win.

I would much rather approach a game with an incentive to win, rather than an incentive to not lose. Sheffield Wednesday have no choice. They have to win. If we are playing for a draw, I simply cannot see a way where this group of players can hold off a barrage of pressure for an entire game. We’ll be too terrified to commit too many to scoring ourselves incase it backfires.

At least if Rotherham get a point at Luton, we’ll know we are walking a fine line by not winning. Whether that actually makes any difference, I don’t know. I have very little faith in this squad and management team to pull something out of the bag when it matters.

The best way to stay up no matter what the scenario is to go out to win. Sheffield Wednesday go to pieces when they go behind. We go to pieces when we take the lead... at least it’ll be good for the neutral hey?

  19. Whether that’s a good result for us or not will obviously depend on what happens over the next 2 and a bit hours.

If we lose, it makes zero difference if they won or drew today, they still have to beat us. They’ve saved themselves for another 2 hours at the very least.

We can get a point against Swansea, however if Rotherham win today we’re still on the back foot.

If we don’t lose and Rotherham do, then we can mark today as a very good one results wise. I’m pooping it.
