Aluko, Baldock, Wisdom, Menghi and Jagielka. At least we're guaranteed games (barring bad injuries) from 4 of them and it addresses the big critical needs in the squad. I don't love our midfield tbh but if Morrison is our only option to bulk that up then I'd pass on him and rather get some depth in defence and attack that at least gives us a chance to survive.

Would be my 5 too. Covers a wide area of the pitch and gives us decent reliability.

Morrison is obviously talented and may have impressed Rooney, however his track record would make me wary of making him one of the 5 if that’s all we’re allowed. I don’t think we’re in a position to sign players and hope they come good right now.

Jagielka would have the edge on Davies for me as his longevity and injury record at the end of his career has been better.

Byrne Jag Mengi Buchanan with Wisdom and Forsyth to cover RB, LB and CB is still incredibly thin but we don’t have much choice right now. If we are later allowed to sign more during this window, then defence would again need to be prioritised.

  2. With the news we may be initially allowed to sign 5 players on a free or loan for 12 and 6 months respectively, who do you go for out of the players we know we are interested in.

The free agents training and playing for the club must have some kind of assurances that we hope to sign them, but we can’t have them all.

Focus needs to be put towards the areas we need most. Players like Wisdom and Mengi have an edge as they cover areas where we are very short, and play more than one position. Wingers and striker wise, we are a bit better stocked but there isn’t exactly any depth.

So you have to pick 5 of the following to join immediately, who are they?

    C. Davies

    A. Wisdom

    P. Jagielka

    R. Stearman

    T. Mengi

    S. Aluko

    R. Morrison

    S. Baldock

How do you suggest we fulfill the u23 and U18s fixtures for a season then?

I can say with almost certainty that no ones contracts will be terminated.

That’s the point. If forced to, the club would have to prioritise the first team as relegation would mean loss of income and a knock on affect to various levels of the community.

If the EFL didn’t allow it, so many people would be punished for issues they had zero involvement in. There really is only going to one outcome if they are insistent on maintaining the “integrity” of the competition.

I still wouldn't rule out the nuclear option of releasing some/all of the "Chorley 8" + Brown + Hutchinson if the EFL play hardball.

That's what I assumed would have been included in our "case" to the EFL to relax or alter the rules around this.

I don't know how much it would cost to terminate the contracts of all youth players who featured versus Chorley, and I really don't want that to happen. However from the club's perspective, relegation would cost a lot more. If we have to play with a lot of the players who lost against Chorley, we would be relegated. It's business sense to 'sacrifice' those players for those such as Baldock, Aluko, Morrison, Jagielka etc. to give us a better chance of competing this season.

As long as we can compete and hope to keep our heads above the water, then hopefully a takeover and disciplinary issues can be sorted, and then *finally* next season we could perhaps look to build a stable football club in the Championship again.

I guess it would be the EFL's choice as to whether they'll allow us to sign the players without releasing youth players or not. There's no way we will start the season with the group of registered players we have now.

  5. He knows every call he makes could lead to him being given the chop. The majority of the calls he's made have been disagreed with, but they've also turned out to be completely the right decision.

Consecutive tournament semi-finals for a country who before his reign managed one semi-final in 50 years. Whether he's the greatest manager out there, or doesn't exactly play edge-of-your seat football most of the time, he's doing what the FA want him to do. It's one of the hardest jobs in football because there's already about 55 million England managers out there who think they can do better.

He's also an incredibly likeable bloke, and he's bringing back a feel-good factor and uniting the nation yet again. Whatever happens, I think he's been a brilliant England manager.

Why does it feel like it still isn't over

Because the EFL still dislike us as much, probably even more than they did yesterday. Again they've tried to come after us (rightly or wrongly) and not got the result they want. The statement highlights that they don't agree with the punishment, but they don't have the grounds to appeal.

I think it'll be telling now, as to how quick we are to submit our new accounts. I have no idea how long it would take to prepare what is required, and I don't know how long ago we started to prepare them. If we are still compliant with FFP then I would like to hope we would submit them as soon as possible to fully clear any uncertainty, lift any embargos and get on with the takeover and whatever signings we can afford to make. If we're going to fail on FFP, we will probably wait to submit as long as possible.

However, if we now know we are in the Championship next season, and our new accounts fail the P&S rules, then I would hope we would still submit sooner rather than later. If we end up with a points deduction either way as a result of that, why not do it early and get rid of the embargo, rather than be restricted with recruitment for the entire window, only to receive the deduction any way?

  7. Wish him the best of luck. Decent enough player for us, hampered by a larger price tag, but that wasn't really his fault.

Missed a lot of chances, scored a few important goals. Always seemed to try his best and actually cared, although some of his decision making, especially at this stage of his career, will always puzzle me.

I'd imagine he'll still have a considerable involvement with DCFC if his son Ruben is to remain in our academy.

Press reporting Arsenal buying ben white could effect Clarke move to Derby.

Brighton lose a defender, Clarke steps up to take over as cover for the loss of Ben White.

Without the swap Derby unlikely to sell Knight to brighton, doing so further weakens the squad.

Derby couldn't use the money from the sale of Knight to buy new players due to the transfer embargo.

Derby likely to struggle to bring in free agents with the potential threat of relegation.

I'd be surprised if Brighton are receiving around £50mil for Ben White, and using a player who has spent the last two seasons at a below average Championship side as his replacement.

  9. Does he have his badges or actually have any aspirations to be a manager? Genuine question.

From all I’ve seen it seems like Curtis is gearing himself up for a media/punditry career once he’s retired, and he’s very good at it. Insightful, speaks very well, similar to Liam Rosenior in that regard.

One of the sticks to beat Rooney with is, or was, his lack of badges and experience. The same would have to be said about Davies if he was seriously considered as a replacement for Rooney should he leave.

    Happy with that ?

i would worst team in group F

I probably wouldn't use the word "happy" but it's definitely preferable to both France and Portugal in my opinion. Hopefully we can get through and use the confidence to push our way through more "favourable" ties that would await further down the line.

For what it's worth, I think we've generally played well so far. There's been a lot of moaning, but that's because we've been boring, not poor. We clearly have a more negative playing style, but we're utilising it well regardless of if its what people want to see or not. Croatia and Czech Republic were walks in the park, never really in doubt. It'll be interesting to see how this style suits against a higher quality opposition who will probably look to gain the upper hand.

  11. Well looking at the tournament structure now, the Last 16 is getting even more important for England. We're almost certainly in for a very tough game regardless of if it's Portugal, Germany or France. If Hungary win and Portugal don't, then it's Hungary in the last 16, but that's pretty unlikely.

The other sides in our half of the draw are now Wales/Denmark, Netherlands/Czechs and then Sweden and almost certainly Ukraine. There's absolutely nothing to fear if we make it past the next round, we should be every side listed there. Whoever it is, I hope our home advantage can make the difference. Remarkably, Belgium, Italy, Spain the teams that finish in first and third in Group F will all be avoided until the final should we get there. And to think some people were arguing that finishing second for an "easier" route would be better for us.

  12. The tournament brackets are shaping up a fair bit now, even without the ability to really know which third placed side is going where.

England now know that if we play any of Italy, Belgium or the winner of Group F (France or Germany) at any point, then it would only be in the final.

On our side of the draw is Netherlands, Wales, Denmark and again like between whichever of France/Germany doesn't win their group. Add in the winner of Group E (Sweden, Spain?) and that might be as hard as our side gets. If we can get through on Tuesday then we really should feel that we have a great chance of making the final.

Gave us a footballing lesson by all accounts and ended up with 1 goal and 1 point.

Meanwhile, we scrambled our way to 7 points (and 2 goals).

    Footballing lesson? Give over ?

At least their last game was at Hampden so they can just walk home with their precious memories of that 0-0 draw safe in their hearts.
