May Contain Nuts Posted May 16 Share Posted May 16 (edited) Ebou Adams has been and will hopefully be a brilliant signing, but people mistake his ability to do the job of 2-3 players due to his sheer athleticism - most notable when he kept appearing on the left wing while CBT was hiding after his miss - as a sign that the manager has got the midfield balance right tactically, but for that to be the case Fornah would have had a similar impact and the two would be almost interchangable. There's no doubt that he transformed this team but suggestions that we'd have been promoted far earlier if he'd been here all season fall short of the mark because they fail to take into consideration the probability of him missing a large number of games through injury if asked to keep it up over the course of a full season. 5 games in a row without Adams this season and we'd have collapsed completely. The 'cult of personality' surrounding also Warne spells doom for whoever eventually replaces him. The whole thing about him being a refreshing change from the norm sets up any following manager, accidentally or otherwise, for negative comparisons that some won't be able to let go of if he's not as interesting / charming a character as PW is. Lewis Dobbin was far better than anyone we've bought in since and I'd love him to come back. Claude Davis was a better defender than Richard Keogh, Keogh's just lucky we never saw him embarrass himself at Premier League level. He was too lazy to study what works in the Championship before taking on the job and too self absorbed and blinkered to recognize that his style of football wasn't working and wouldn't. But because it feels more like a meritocratic league, like football used to be and how it should be across the board. A good manager and some good players can do well in it without bags of cash. It’s not just 4 or 5 monopolists and then also rans - every season the same like the prem and to an extent the champ - you can go on a run and make a difference. and also I think the online world of football fandom can sometimes be quite corrosive and (unintentionally) cruel - this forum included. Not the individual spats about ‘should Warne stay or go’, or ‘is Sibley a star or failure’ etc, but more that we all fill in huge gaps of time in between actual football matches with speculation and conjecture which, often creates nothing but arguments, doubts among the players, and can be reductive towards staff and even the local reporters - usually based upon very little information or experience but just the need to individually transmit. His first spell was a team of Nigel Clough's grafters and a load of freebies and loan (conversions). We signed some favourable deals for players like Thorne, Ince, Bent etc way below market value then. He was sacked before Mel splashed cash. HIs second spell involved a January window in which the likes of De Sart and Nugent were signed. Again he was sacked before spending any cash. - Derby fans unrealistic behaviour derailed our season as much as the injuries did in 2015. Fans aggressive behaviour towards players had a massive impact and some players never recovered. IN particular, the Brighton game where 3-0 up at half time, and fans were abusing Derby players cos (I assume) we didn't score more, started the decline as some of our more fragile players bottled it. Hendrick was abused during the game and then beaten up in Derby town centre, Forsyth was threatened on the touchline, many players were screamed at by idiotic fans for only winning 3-0! Had fans "Been more B4" at that stage, we'd have probably been a Premier League mainstay now. - Fans treatment of Darren Wassall is a stain on the history of the club. I am still ashamed to this day of the reaction to that Rotherham game. - Cameron Jerome was massively underrated and even that late into his career, was a great player. We can only dream of a player that good being in our team right now. - Most football fans attending the game don't seem to be able to grasp how much a negative/aggressive vibe impacts the players. Conversely they cannot grasp that it is much harder to lift the team than it is to crush it. The reason why we end up on Sky a lot is because we can drive up viewing figures, Leeds being the only other side I can think of that people will always watch if on TV. Not many sides fall into this bracket, maybe the Sheffield teams and maybe Portsmouth could do but aside that I don’t think there’s many clubs that neutrals really maintain an interest over. Both games were won and both games finished early because invading the pitch had been fetishised. The Carlisle scenes, though good imagery, were a disgrace. Southampton was fair enough as that was raw emotion. Last game at the BBG was also fair enough. Reading, Charlton and Cardiff were just weird. Phillip Cocu and Nigel Clough are the only two managers in the past 20 years who could build a team to an identity. Phillip Cocu will achieve more in his managerial career (a last 16 Champions League spot and top division title on his resume) than any other Derby manager for the next 50+ years.
