Leeds Ram
1 hour ago, Ambitious said: My unpopular opinion is that I believe the Premier League SHOULD shut up shop. I heard on the radio that the revenue generated by the Premier League is currently 50/50 between overseas and the UK. It has changed significantly and quickly as it once stood at 90/10. Now, I don't think that is a bad thing at all and obviously for the Premier League it's fantastic. The apatite for the league is great, but let's not pretend that grew because of the promotion and relegation. It grew because of the dominance of the top 6 and 90% of that overseas revenue is due to them, without question. The balance will soon shift where the Premier League becomes a genuine tourist league. The revenue will be significantly dominated by overseas investment and in turn there will be requirements by the Premier League to pander, if that's the right word, to the investors. We aren't far away from Premier League games being played in different countries and again, I'm not totally against it. I wouldn't want Derby to be a part of it. A permanent break from the Premier League would allow the EFL to focus on their brand. The majority of football supporters in this country support teams outside the top 20 clubs in the league. Undeniable. I would argue that the majority of football fans in the country, like me, aren't interesting the big clubs - the big names. They just want a game of football to watch at a reasonable price at a reasonable time. The EFL then could become a competitor to the Premier League. The top division in the EFL becomes the Premier League for the 'national league' it's not a stepping stone any more. I genuinely believe it would garner more attention from the wider public, if marketed correctly. The biggest benefit is that clubs wouldn't have the disparity between the Premier League and Championship anymore, the pot of gold isn't there. The only other option is going to be increased hand-outs from the Premier League down into the football league. The more the Premier League grows, the more help the Championship will need to stop it becoming a complete farce - more so than it already is. Mel said only two teams in the past 10 years(?) have been promoted without completely blowing up their finances in their promotion year, excluding those promoted with parachute payments. You only have to look at the top 3 now. I think the frustrations with Norwich being promoted and relegated almost bi-annually is starting to cause questions too, from the Premier League. On this isn't the championship something like the 8th most attended league in Europe? It might be an interesting proposition in the future to let a handful of clubs leave and reform the football league but it'd be the kind of reformation that like the super league that'd spark a massive backlash. Agreed. In my scenario the football league would become a competitor to the Premier League on home soil. I think too many people get attached to the way things were and are, but in reality the disparity is going to grow more and more to its organically strained. We have seen teams relegated from the Premier League with wage bills £100m - which is now a small amount in the Premier League. A wage bill for a non-parachute payment club, even the biggest ones, typically gets to around £30m in the Championship. The smaller teams tend to have a wage bill of around £10m. In pounds and pence it's not comparable to Crystal Palace having a wage bill of £150m and United £300m. However, percentage wise it's much, much bigger and therefore more detrimental to competition IMO. Everyone in the game understands the need for a change, but I genuinely don't think anyone is putting any ideas forward. The EFL are absolutely awful in growing their own brand. Sky, their biggest TV partner, even market the Championship as a 'race to the Premier League'. I can't remember which team got promoted, but they described it as 'back from the wilderness'. The Football League is very marketable and getting out from under the shadow of the Premier League gives it plenty more opportunity.

Would it be fair to say that in this way of doing things, the Premier League would be like the NFL in terms of stature and comercialisation, while the EFL would be more like College Football, with the better atmosphere? Speaking as someone who knows next to nothing about American Football, btw. Tamworthram

Crewton
I got the impression from comments online that Swansea fans weren't universally disappointed to lose Cooper as manager. His football was very Cocu/Clement-like, according to them, but getting them into the playoffs while they were cost cutting can't be dismissed. Yeah, my swansea mate pretty much said the same, he's quite good but very boring football. Crewton
Carl Sagan
From the Reading (Hobnobs) matchthread: https://hobnob.royals.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=188819 "Don't think we have been too bad but Derby have looked pretty good. Well organised defensively and looked to target our full backs." "Lol got away with one there " [When the penalty wasn't given] "I think the ref might of spent a bit of time in Derby in the past because he seems to hate the place and all the cnuts in it." "Grim old game this. Can see Derby staying up, hard to break down and do the basics well." "They are a decent, well organised side to be fair to them. Hard to break down. If they are poor then what are we?" "Rubbish second half. Ponderous, sloppy and not good enough. Derby deserved winners, look solid but we’ve helped them out a fair bit with our ineptitude. Really frustrating." "We weren’t great tonight but credit where it’s due Derby did their job, all their players put a shift in and were well organised. Fair result." "You could see why Derby don`t let many in and don`t score many." "If you'd offered me 10/15 points this month I would have ripped your hand off so I won't be too critical, not a great showing by us but I really don't get the "Derby were terrible, how did we lose to them?" type of comments, they got their goal, defended well and frankly their goalkeeper made the saves he needed too." "Derby pulled off the neat trick of being able to press us high up the pitch and make it difficult to play out and also have all their team behind the ball to stop us from going through them. Their shape was good but our utterly ponderous fanny ball really played into their hands." Carnero, archram and angieram 1 1

I was knackered just reading half of it. Remember the good old days when football players turned up for a few hours training a week and played football mid week and on a Saturday, and had loads of time to go out on the lash or spend a few afternoons in the bookies, during the week, maybe he should give it a go! He said we were all over them until the 70 minute mark. Whereas we were undoubtedly all over them in the first half, but we seemed a bit sluggish at the start of the 2nd for about 20 minutes. Then we regained some momentum for the next 15/20 mins before running out of steam for the final 10. Steve How Hard?
