A goal-scorer away from a good team?

Much though I love CKR I think we really need a 15/20 goals a season striker (doesn't everyone)!

I think if we could find/sign one then we've definitely got the bones of a good team, especially with Bielik fit.

What do you reckon?

CKR may get that over a whole season. He surprised last year. Agreed definitely need another but many teams looking for such a hidden (cheap) gem. Hopefully wanting to learn from England's leading goalscorer may outweigh the over garbage such as no wages. If only CM had stayed - sigh

I think as a team we just need more goals in general. I'm longing for the days when goals just came from everywhere. Russell, Ward, Dawkins, Hendrick, Hughes... didn't even need a striker! Just good old movement and good use of the ball. I'd even take a set piece specialist like Inigo to bag us 10 goals a year, we haven't even got that. It's down to Rooney to sort our poo out and try and progress our playing style.

Lawrence has got to get back in the goals, Joz has got to kick on. When we can we've got to try and address that midfield because we're in for another drab season in front of goal with those centre mids IMO. CKR will lead the line well again but his form will probably fall off a cliff again, as he tires over the season (as expected at his age and zero depth to give him a breather).

Not going to panic just yet, as depressing as the squad looks, it is what it is. Let's see what wheeling and dealing we can do when we're allowed.

I think we need more than just a goal scorer. In the centre back positions we're hardly looking that good even with the addition of the trialists and I don't love our midfield either. In the middle we lack both creativity and a solid base that gives us real problems. During the game against both Utd and Salford when they got onto our backline they looked like they struggled to deal with the pace and movement of both those teams. I don't think that's particularly promising.

I think the fullback areas are the strongest we have and I like Marshall too but not a fan of Roos. But basically fine in those areas i think.

On the wings we're not looking fantastic. Lawrence is fine but he's not enough. Aluko did look alright against Salford and he'll be a solid ball carrier but not sure how many goals/assists he'll get for us over the course of a season. I'd still continue looking for a winger.

Getting that striker is a big problem and there aren't many goal scorers around who can do 20 goals a season at this level. But we do need more than just CKR and Stretton that's for sure. Personally, I think the big problem is that we still don't seem to be creating that many clear chances from open play. Even against Salford we only had 2 clear and easy opportunities where we should have scored (Baldock and Aluko) and there was little to write home about against Man Utd. I think that's our biggest problem atm and our lack of defensive solidity.

Aluko had two all to himself. I thought we created a load of good chances, but needed a goal-scorer...

Big season for Joz though.

He had the 1 on 1 where he still had a defender tracking him but it was still clear cut for my money. The other I presume you're referring to was when he miscontrolled then had to shift on a weaker foot from a relatively tight angle and had to get it past the defender and the keeper at the near post which was the only post he could aim at. That wasn't a clear cut chance for me as I wouldn't be expecting a player to score more often than not from that position.

I think we created openings against salford where we might have scored but few obvious chances where we cut them open.

Goalkeeper - good

Fullbacks - good

CBs - good (with free agents)

Midfield - good (with Bielik)

Forwards - missing a goal-scorer

Goalkeeper - below average

full backs - average

centre backs - bad (with free agents) catastrophic (without free agents)

Defensive midfield - good (with Bielik) and below average without Bielik.

attacking midfield - below average

strikers - bad, as good as CKR can be on his day.

I think if we can sign a couple of good centre backs, similar to Matt Clarke’s level and stay away from injuries then we will stay up. In order to be competitive with the likes of Sheff Utd and Fulham then we would need to improve in every aspect.

Kane or Haaland? Decisions decisions.

I think we're just two goal scorers, a creative player, two good wingers, three midfielders, a pair of full backs, some defenders, a keeper and a management set up away from being a good team. oh, and a settled wealthy, generous but also competent and restrained ownership.

We're pretty close.

In Wayne we trust.
