I'm going to assume promotion for this and we'll go with a 3412/3421...

Loans for: Evans, Rooney, Fornah, Radcliffe, Weston
Extensions for: Forsyth (backup and in-game coaching for U21s), Sibley, Thompson and DRobinson

Meaning we retain the following squad:
GK: Vickers
RCB: Nelson, Nyambe
CB: Bradley, Forsyth
LCB: Cashin
RWB: Ward, Wilson
LWB: Sibley, Elder
DM: -
CM: LThompson, DRobinson
RW: -
LW: Mendez-Laing, Blackett-Taylor
CF: Washington, DBrown

In my squad, that would leave gaps at GK(x2), CB, LWB, DM(x2), CM, RW(x2), CF(x2) - 11 signings

GK, 1st choice - Chris Walton (free, Ipswich)

GK, 3rd choice - John Ruddy (free, Birmingham) May want to go somewhere he will get game time which would rule us out. He's at the age where he should be stepping back, and he wouldn't have to move too far if he were to join us.

CB, 1st choice - Sam Stubbs (free, Bradford). A risky option, but he's still only 25, dominant in the air, and a good defender. He is slow so could struggle with stepping up a couple of divisions. Saying that, I thought he played very well in his game against us in the EFL Trophy.

LWB, rotation - Sam McCallum (free, Norwich)
image.png.f3905ade7e43bc8397658dabf2228069.png

DM, 1st choice - Ebou Adams (£?). Makes our team click without doing anything fancy. Difficult to say what Cardiff would want for him.
image.png.7b550af14b421a30fcca4f3aa11ed2b1.png

DM, 2nd choice - Nohan Kenneh (£?, Hibs). He would often train with the first team at Leeds under Bielsa, so you know the type of player he is. A 21 year old version of Adams.
image.png.30aa7ceb014a445d28ee46d3e9c4dd9f.png

CM, 1st choice - Herbie Kane (free, Barnsley). Would take over from Hourihane as the main set-piece taker.
image.png.4470e0b85c2ac75594319cfef4fc2a12.png

RW, rotation - Tyrhys Dolan (compensation, Blackburn). Versitile, coming through as a winger at Blackburn before moving more central this season. The type of player you need in a squad to give the flexibility between formations depending on opposition and injuries within the squad.
image.png.6ab0073ba251ccb2881e037228bd11d3.png

RW, rotation - Femi Azeez (compensation, Reading). One of the best wingers in the league, with a high goal contribution output. Will be in high demand, so an unlikely signing.
image.png.835bbb1938cedecf4cc0842717a851c4.png

CF, 1st choice - Harry Leonard (loan, Blackburn). A good all-round forward who creates as well as scores. We were apparently close to signing him in January, so I can see us going back in for him in the summer.
image.png.51d3f1093fa10fa4597f7fe34de96b36.png

CF, 2nd choice - John McAtee (loan, Luton). More of a #10, but is another hard worker and one of the more creative CFs in L1.
image.png.5bcf2433b1fa04126688d7ebcc4d6b25.png

A final squad of:
GK: Walton, Vickers, Ruddy
RCB: Nelson, Nyambe
CB: Stubbs, Bradley, Forsyth
LCB: Cashin
RWB: Ward, Wilson
LWB: McCallum, Sibley, Elder
DM: Adams, Kenneh
CM: Kane, LThompson, DRobinson
RW: Dolan, Azeez
LW: Mendez-Laing, Blackett-Taylor
CF: Leonard, McAtee, Washington, DBrown

Some good suggestions. What do you think to McNamara at Millwall and Browne at Preston?

McNamara plays in a position we don't need to recruit. Awful end product too so not someone I would sign even if we needed someone.

I like Browne and may have suggested him before. However, I don't think he'd get in the side over Ebou Adams or Herbie Kane, and I doubt he would want to join a side to sit on the bench.

It will be interesting to see how Adams goes on in the Championship. He struggled to get on the Cardiff team. It will depend what formation we play. They would be interesting in a 433.

I can see a 3 man midfield being more important in the Championship

Saw a kid today who has a very bright future. 18 year old Grimsby Town striker Cameron Gardner.

Signed a month's loan for Grimsby Borough who played in the Northern Premier East. Very good player.

Signed by The Mariners from Gateshead and just recently signed a pro deal. Grimsby's Youth Manager and first team scout were in attendance so obviously highly though of

Colby Bishop, Portsmouth fc, at 27yrs, is a physical, hardworking striker who excels at getting on the end of crosses and causing problems for defenses. Hes got circa 20 goals this season. In my opinion age matters. Here's how we can find similar players:

Key Attributes to Look For:

Physicality: A strong presence in the box, able to hold off defenders and win aerial battles.

Work Rate: Someone who tirelessly presses, tracks back, and puts defenders under pressure.

Poaching: Clinical when chances come inside the penalty area. Good movement to find space.

Link-up Play: While not necessarily a technical dribbler, needs to be able to hold the ball up and bring others into the game.

He’s a super player for sure but he seems settled at Portsmouth.

Has bullied our central defenders in the past.

Let's target a striker like Colby Bishop – someone who is strong, good in the air, and excels as a target man. We need a player in that 21-30 age range who can give us the goals we need for Championship success.

Why should he leave Portsmouth for us?

They are above us and almost certain to go up.

Hopefully, they'll be below us on alphabetical order, on zero points in the Championship, when the transfer window opens, Angie.

Good luck finding one for a fee we can afford

If we earn promotion, we need a budget that signals our intent to compete in the Championship. Otherwise, we're just setting ourselves up for embarrassment. Ambitious managers want to be part of a winning project, and the right budget shows owners are serious about success.

Scared 2 more today in the El Haddocko Derby against Cleethorpes Town. Will almost certainly be in Grimsby Town's first team squad next season. Will go on to bigger things.

Just watching Patrick Bamford play for Leeds - said to be on £70,000 a week . They can afford it . First season for coming down - they will pocket £55 million in parachute payments . It drops in season 2 and 3 but how can they fail with that sort of   income on top of good crowds .

I think you can compete in the Championship with a £30m wage bill, but it has to be spent so effectively as now you are seeing a similar wage structure in place for all non-parachute payment clubs (circa £23-28m). It means the smartest team has an opportunity to be successful, but ultimately you’re all up against the parachute payment clubs for a promotion place - which Ipswich are finding out and fighting against now.

If we gained promotion, which is by no means a certainty, the first season will be about survival on a sustainable budget. Beyond that further progress will probably require further inward investment, with a possible change of ownership at some point.

I think momentum is so important in football. Last time we crawled out of the third tier under Arthur, we won the league the next season and went straight into the top flight. Look at Ipswich this season, top of League One and full-on competing for promotion, while Wednesday and Argyle didn't maintain their momentum and may very well come back down.

If we go up, and if the mindset is then just to survive for a year, we will likely be relegated.

If promoted to the Championship, i expect warne will adopt a strategic player recruitment approach focused on:

Experienced Lower-League Gems: Prioritise signing players from lower leagues who have already proven their quality and possess the mental fortitude to thrive in the Championship. These players offer valuable experience and immediate impact.

High-Potential Youth: Invest in young, driven players with high potential. This focus unlocks opportunities for future development and profitable player sales, promoting financial sustainability.

Smart Financial Decisions: Avoid the temptation of overspending on big-name signings from the Premier League or top-tier Championship clubs. These come with significant financial risk and might not align with the team's strategy.

Strategic Loan Market Use: Leverage the loan market to acquire talented players from higher-level clubs. This enhances squad depth and quality without excessive long-term financial commitments.

Playing Style and Culture Fit: Above all, prioritise players who seamlessly integrate with Derby County's established playing style and foster a positive team culture. Strong team cohesion and chemistry are essential for success at the Championship level.

Ideal Age Balance: Strive for a mix of experienced players in their prime (24-29 years old) and those bursting with youthful potential (18-23 years old). The experienced core provides leadership, stability, and Championship-specific know-how, while younger talents inject energy, growth potential, and resale value. Minimise players past their peak (30+) due to the Championship's physical demands.

Lower League Focus: Aggressively scout and recruit top talent from League One and League Two. These players embody cost-effectiveness, ambition, and a hunger to prove themselves at a higher level. Supplement this approach with a few experienced Championship players to guarantee the team has the quality and know-how needed to compete.

This multifaceted recruitment approach will empower us to assemble a competitive Championship squad that champions financial responsibility and sustainable growth within the club.
