Paul Warne appointed as Head Coach

I don’t understand the outrage here.

Clowes gave Rosenior an interim position, so he was auditioning for the permanent role, not guaranteed the role. Clowes is well within his rights to go in a different direction, especially when Rosenior hasn’t been overwhelmingly impressive.

This says loud, clear and unequivocally that standards and expectations are high and promotion and bouncing back straight away is the target.

This would line up with the calibre of player we brought to the club and this would also line up with the conversations being had internally.

With that in mind, can Clowes be blamed? We’ve dropped 13 points in nine games. We’ve lost a third of our league games. We have thrown away a win v Plymouth, contrived to lose v Lincoln and Charlton, and not made anything count v Fleetwood and Shrewsbury. We’re seven points from the top two places and five points from 3rd. It doesn’t set the right tone and suggests a rethink is needed.

As such, it’s no surprise Clowes wants someone who knows the league, someone who understands the mechanics of the league and how to win games consistently, and someone who has consistent experience of doing well in this league.

Warne could be a very shrewd appointment in that sense and especially if it’s on a one or two year deal. Three promotions from League 1? It’s difficult to argue with his track record, especially as Rotherham are not necessarily a big fish in this league, just benefactors of yo-yoing between the Championship and League 1.

Of course people will turn their nose up at his perceived style. But here he will have better resources and a better calibre of player than he has ever had at Rotherham. So in theory it could be a good blend, knowing when to play our football and knowing when and being coached how to take a different approach.

We certainly have players that could thrive under a different style. It’s not as if we are the Arsenal of League 1. It’s not a squad of purely technical footballers, is it?

It’s worth a shot. Enjoy the ride.

He's managed 9 games, stats like that mean nothing, he could lose the next 4 games, then how would the win % look after only 13 games.

Then it would look worse wouldn’t it. Don’t need to be a rocket scientist to work that one out lol.

Hes managed 12, win 7, drawn 2 and lost 3.

If that was a new managers opening 12 games, I think you’d take it wouldn’t you?

Surprised by this decision tbh.  Quote below from a Rotherham supporting friend who unlike a few others I’ve wound up gave a balanced view,

”He’d do well for you, gets everything out of the players he has and is an absolute fitness fanatic so they’d run for everything.  There’s a reason he’s never kept us in the Championship though, not sure he’s got the tactical knowledge to coach at that higher level, especially against Prem teams that have come down.”

I’ve refrained from replying to say he’s not kept Rotherham in the Championship because, well, it’s Rotherham.

Asked him if it’s more football or hoofball……..

”Somewhere in between.  When we had Smith we played a lot of long balls in the Championship.  Much better football this season, he likes a set play.  Scored plenty over the last few seasons from free kicks and corners”

Well, scoring “plenty” and scoring goals from corners would be progress!

Good to get some informed opinion on him, thanks!

Thats why you have to give managers time. Stats are irrelevant at this point in the season.

What if he isn't the manager you'd have chosen? But he's been an interim until you decide.

Edit: if he's done so well here another job will be easy to find.

This is my issue with fans today - you basically think we should have played 9, won 9 from a team of free transfers at the end of their careers.

We have some really good players but we’re not entitled to dominate the league, far from it.

Just for the record, excluding the manager we had during the Second World War, Liam leaves us as the highest win % record of any manager we've had.

Yet some people think he's not good enough...

What a ridiculous comment. He's won 4 of 9 games in league 1!!!!!!!

If we're going to be judging managers by there first 10 games in charge then Steve McClaren is the messiah and he was doing it in the Championship - not league 1.

Bizarre that folks are crying that this is just like the hire fire mel days ,, rosenior was never appointed manager

bizarre that folks are crying why let him bring in players then get rid ,,,,,,, we had next no players and nobody else to bring them in rather than rosenior

I am not in the least surprised he has not got the job permanently, to me we have some very decent players come in who started well and are going backwards ,the last three games have been a shambles , the win on Saturday papers over the cracks and to me it was down to the players determination and quality at this level that pulled us out of the fire , Liam said afterwards that he told the players at halftime to stay patient and keep doing what they were doing ( words to that affect),

we are neither one thing or the other under Liam this season , we Pratt about at the back to allow the opposition to get into shape behind the ball then go direct long ball or long diagonal

if your going direct then do it quick and catch the opposition out ??‍♂️

I hear a lot of talk about anti football but to me knocking the ball around your own half then turning back to your own half constantly, keeping the ball at all cost s at the expense of not scoring is the most anti football you can be

Not sure I’m seeing a lot of ‘crying’, just a bit of confusion and disappointment.

9 games isn’t really long enough to come to any serious conclusions about Rosenior’s abilities as a manager, particularly with a brand new team thrown together at a moment’s notice. On that basis alone I would have given him more time to demonstrate he is worthy of becoming the permanent manager.

I’m also surprised that the Board didn’t see stability as being important, after all we’ve been through after the last few years.

But there’s probably more to all this than meets the eye, so guess we’ll learn more over the next few days.

Still nothing on the OS

I imagine there won't be much today. LR's position seems unclear, is he going/is he staying/is he having the night to consider/is a new manager going to want him?

Probably best to keep quiet till everything sorted.

I have noticed a lot of posts suggesting David Clowes has made this decision. I don’t think he has. I doubt he is making any footballing matters decisions and others are making them. He may give the final ok but I reckon others are making these calls.

As for LR interim was always the title. Can’t make out if something is in place already. It would be strange to step down without someone in place. RD said Warne is away having a celebration holiday with his coaching staff and wives or is it a thank you and good bye to them?

Good shout but who is making the football decisions? Apart from Clowes and Pearce who else is on the Board, Roy Mac?

Why is it ridiculous? It’s 7 wins from 12 competitive games, a 58% win record.

You’re judging him on just a few games so I’ll judge him on those same few games and say he’s been phenomenal. Is winning 58% of those games not good enough for you? What do you want from a manager with a new group of players? Please tell me - don’t be flippant by saying away goals, but be honest, what do you want from a new manager in the next 12 games?

Pearce isn’t on the board, neither is Mac anymore.

The board is Clowes and two of his Directors from his own company.
