Cashin- what’s the matter with him?

Paul Warne needs to make it clear tonight to Cashin that he is not playing midfield. Stay back , mark a centre forward and keep a clean sheet . Moral booster for Saturday.

That's easy to say from the side-lines, but not so easy to make happen when everything around you is falling apart.  He's not coming into midfield because he wants to, it's because there's a massive gap there, that attackers are running freely into whenever they like.  We seem to be playing the same "everyone bombs forward, then everyone sprints back" strategy that we started last season with.  It's great if it works, but when it doesn't you get absolutely killed, and that was happening more often than not on Friday.

For example, this is the lead up to Blackburn's second goal:

You can clearly see the massive hole in midfield.  Ozoh (green) has gone and pressed their left winger, and got bypassed.  Cashin (red) has stepped out to pick up the guy that Ozoh should have been covering.  If he doesn't do this, that guy controls the ball and is turned and running at us, plus he's got 2 more Blackburn midfielders breaking with him, along with the forwards already there.  Cashin eventually gets a tackle in on him, and then wins 2 more tackles in midfield, ultimately resulting in this moment:

Cashin is the one just getting up from making a tackle.  It's a full 10 seconds after the first screenshot, and at this point there are 7(!) Blackburn attackers streaming onto our backline, while barely any of our midfielders or forwards have got back to help out.  We might have got away with this kind of situation in League one, but we get punished in this league.  The other goals are similar, we bomb forward, they break on us and we get killed.  The 3rd goal they are breaking 4-on-2 at one point.  The 4th goal is a 5-on-5 breakaway.

I'm not saying Cashin is blameless, or playing amazingly, but it's nowhere near just down to Cashin.  And it's certainly not as simple as staying back and marking someone.  We are almost deliberately making the game chaotic and stretched, and it's resulting in players making mistakes.  No centre half looks consistently good when they're outnumbered, and have got players turned and running at them at the time.

That really makes no sense mate.

Tbf its similar to what I meant in one of the preseason games.

Cashin isn't a Rio Ferdinand 'Rolls Royce' type of a centre back, blessed with stature and natural pace. Ok he can ping a long range pass but he isn't especially cultured on the ball either.

He can't rely on what God blessed him with, he can't stroll round the pitch taking the ball off people and looking imperious.

Cashin is stocky, strong and determined to give everything. He throws himself into tackles, is happy to try and out-muscle opponents and intercept passes by getting in front at the last second.

On his day his sheer desire wins him every header, gets a toe on every tackle and sees him shaking off attackers with ease and finding nice passes. As Bris says ...he's 9 or 10 out of 10.

On a bad day, he looks slow, dives in and gets skinned. He can't go back to a 'cruise mode' so he just hurls himself into everything even more,  throwing himself recklessly into tackles, chasing the ball out of position or being guilty of getting caught in possession.

I know there are a lot generalisations here... just how I see it.

Sorry, mate, I was just about to read your post but got distracted after accidentally reading your username as ‘Duncan With Jam’ 🤣

He's playing with a makeshift defence and he's a young player. The midfield in front of him isn't great either. Cashin is fine.

We are still messing with the defence and with the greater challenges this season we will see it tinkered with a lot I reckon. Midfield in front of him is potentially very good and better than last season by a mile, but they haven’t got a group understanding yet. Cash is a bit out of form that’s all. He’s a cracking player and will be back soon .. no doubts at all. Best tackler we’ve got and able to take ball out of defence better than most. Just a bit of a slow start .. nothing to see here move along.

If you look at him, he's a very similar build to Wayne Rooney who was well known for taking a few weeks to come to full fitness. Maybe that's all it is, a hangover from a grueling pre-season

Just came across this. Some guy on the Bolton forum, after we'd played them last season, said of Cashin "You wouldn't want to spill his beer".

International break so soon after an international tournaments should be banned, just as you’re getting into the season they snatch it away from us. Ugh.

Yep, just remind us how many tournaments England have won since the introduction of international breaks? As for Scotland, Wales and Ireland.......

Thought Cashin’s passing out from the back was better today . But he gave our new goalie two of the worst pass backs , you are ever likely to see . Phillips is breathing down his neck for a place in the team . Not the time for Cash’ to give a goal away .

I thought cashin was good today, agree on the hospital ball though! Can only remember one though?

cash turned it round from first couple of games! Thought people were quick to say had his head turned, felt very harsh for someone who’s been as committed as he has to us

Yes two very dodgy near-misses but otherwise solid. Luckily they didnt matter along with Ebou's moment.
