I just think we need something different. We are signing workmanlike strikers. We desperately need a bit of pace and trickery up front. There must be someone out there who we can get despite the restrictions.

Would Washington not offer that? He gets beyond the striker and isnt just a target man - but people say he doesn't score enough. Can't have everything?

Seems he's playing tonight.  Clearly this is going nowhere soon if that's the case.  Bet he get's 2 goals as well and any chance of a move evaporates, Recruitment on a striker has to be quick, as you always get other interest, or, they do something that stops the move like getting a hat trick.  We seem to be recruiting forwards at the pace of a snail on ketamine.

We had a player meeting those requirements last season - Lewis Dobbin but alas he didn’t have that vital ingredient of scoring goals on a regular basis. It's far more important to have players who know what positions to take up and then, when the chances come, are able to put away an acceptable proportion of them.

Players with pace, trickery (which don't always relate to effectiveness) and an ability to score regularly are scarce and way above our current maximum salary level - maybe our best hope is a loan who contributes goals similar to McAttee and Cannon who seemed to flourish at Shef Utd and Preston last season. Unfortunately, for PL clubs there are far more attractive places to send their young players out on loan - sadly, another downside of not being in the Championship.

This season is huge in so many ways.

Think you sum this up perfectly Wolfie.

Dobbin, clearly far from the finished article more often than not failed to finish really good chances, but he did find himself with opportunities on lots of occasions.  Can the composure needed in those positions be coached and/or will it come from experience and game time.  He scored 5 for us and could easily have had 10, whereby we would have all been crying out for another season's loan.  Probably time to move on from him as he doesn't really suit our style, but I will watch his career with interest.

Regarding Smith, then depending on the cost I think he would be exactly what we need, but would Wednesday seriously be looking to sell him after such a good season for them last year ?

Interesting link though,

Regards

“We’re not signing Colin Todd, we can’t afford him!” Mr B Clough.
We can trust the truth re transfers when a player appears in our team after the whistle tomorrow.

Even waving a team scarf and/or introduced as “Our latest signing” (Ian Storrey Moore) may not be anything more than a statement of hopeful intent!

Perhaps will gain that from a loan?

People saying we need something different and pace....Smith would offer something different as he is a giant.

I understand the want & need for pace but so many teams sit deep against us that pace is pretty irrelevant. However, Washington does offer the pace & runs in behind opposition defences.

Are you thinking of Matt Smith? He's 6'6. Michael Smith is 6'3.
