I guess the lesson for me is it doesn't matter what you do, if you shine in that role and excel in your performance then you will become noticed and opportunities then will come organically - fave saying that I've been told was the cream always rises to the top.

I got a job in a start up company making parts for Honda and Rover did well the business expanded was offered a managerial role then things grew from there. But you can apply that to any role really just need to apply yourself and not see the role for what it is but look at the company to see what opportunities are there for the right candidate.

I've always been told it's better to be in a job than not be in a job as whatever it is you can pull relevant experience from it into your CV for other roles or in a competency based interview for example. Shows you have the work ethic as well which counts for a hell of a lot nowadays.

I'm glad to hear things are going well for you and thanks for the advice! ?

Thank you for asking @David.  I'm really good. Hope you are too.  I've enjoyed all the various lockdowns (apart from not seeing the kids for 18 months and my team live), my team stayed in the division, I live on the edge of one of the most beautiful parts of the country which has been quieter than I've ever known it; nature has blossomed, the dogs have been walked every day, I'm fitter and lighter than I've been for 30 years; I'm now enjoying seeing more people around and I've had both my jabs without any side effects. And Mrs Ilkley and I are still talking happily to each other.  Life still has its irritations but then it always did

Back home after our first holiday since Bonkers announced Lockdown I.

I wasn't sure how I was going to feel with respect to going into bars, the casino etc, and I had major concerns with respect to how the Memsahib would feel, because although I was the one shielding, that probably put more pressure on her. However, we both survived unscathed from any self-imposed mental pressures. We were careful to choose familiar surroundings - our favourite Blackpool hotel and Belgian beer bar - and of course the fantastic weather helped.

My chili plants are thriving, even notoriously difficult ones to germinate like Naga, so I reckon I'm tickety boo.

I shall pass over this question as I don't know any of you.

I've met Boycie (Kitchen's great cheers ? ) and that's it.

You don’t need to have met us. Just ask a random member if he’s actually alright.  @Curtains for instance.

I'm not bad. Just got back from the office and treated myself to a nice red pepper and feta salad. Feeling anxious a lot of the time atm as my studying time is coming to an end in the next 6 months tops and my ideal job (post doc researcher, junior lecturer) doesn't look likely in the slightest. As a result, I'm scrambling around trying to think of what I could do career wise.

After reading this and some if the other posts saying similar things about getting jobs, I am thankful that I have moved past that awful and worrying stage in life. I’m now 74 and retired 10 years ago. Paid off the mortgage, had an extension built (on the house, not me).  I started out at Derby College of Art (in Green Lane) but left and signed on the dole, became a librarian (Warwick then Littleover branch) then various jobs before settling on Information management and spent the last 30 years advising developing countries on economic and structural and civil service reform. But I can remember the bad times and really feel for those younger ones leaving college but desperately trying to find a job of their choice. However, things have a habit of working out OK in the end.

Very nervous and apprehensive.

Clara’s birthday is next week which is obviously a joyous day but is scary too. Topped off with her little brother is due in 3 weeks which again should be joyous but I’m somewhat dreading.

apart from that pretty good. Pleased to be able to see distant family again and pleased I can play football and pool with my mates. Definitely happier now we can socialise a bit more (for now)

I hope you're enjoying your retirement ? It sounds like you had a varied and fulfilling working life ? Thanks for the advice on things working out, it's what my friends tell me ?

I’m truly fed up! Even more so with rumours that Portugal could be removed from the travel Greenlist. I was already fed up worrying about coordinating the rip-off tests we need. What is the point of all the lockdowns, vaccinations, testing, social distancing etc if there’s never going to be trust and faith in evolution. Whilst I can see some rationale in the overall thinking, there must be a point where we break the circle of continuous fear and crack on with life. If not, what’s the point of life?

Those of you that know me (cyber wise), know that i work hard and do so knowing that I’ve got something to look forward to, whether it be a holiday or a Butlins weekend with the boys.

Like most, I’ve missed out on, or sacrificed a lot over the last 15 months or so. I am past the point of feeling selfish now cos I cannot see justification for the control and potential restriction.

aside of potentially missing out on a holiday, as none of us would be able to quarantine, I think I’d lose all the money too.

Most holiday companies are letting you move your bookings to a later date for no extra charge if you can’t go

How are you on boats? Just thinking of that Only Fools & Horses episode, To Hull and Back.

Wouldn’t borrow a boat from Hull though, somewhere down Cornwall maybe

poo.

Work is rubbish.

Kids are a pain in the arse.

Football is rubbish.

England about to dash my hopes of a win in a major tournament.

So just the same as ever I guess.

This surprises me as you are normally so cheery ?

Summer arrived in Sweden... we skipped spring. So sun is out...Euros ( and my completely irrational thought that England can win something) just around the corner. Cricket is on...Lions Tour and Olympics. Sports wise whats not to love.

Sad I cant come back to England yet. Was really hoping Sweden might be on the green list but that seems some way off. Miss my family and cant wait to see them.
