Coming Season

Much more confident than this time 12 months ago.

I think we’ve made some good signings. I’m not fussed that Knight left, he didn’t offer enough last season and if he did, he would have gone to a better club than he has.

With the fans being the 12th man again, anything is possible.

Can’t wait for the season to start. The games we have in August we have every possibility we can be sitting top by the 1st September.

PW suggested we couldn’t get any loans on until the big boys have finalised their squads.

it does feel like we are cutting it fine. Can anyone recall when the likes of Dobbin, Osula, Roberts etc joined us last season?

So this time last season we hadn't signed either of our forward loans. Perhaps a few are panicking a little early?

I’ve long been of that opinion @angieram, we’ve gone into this summer with a settled core of players, have added some experience and quality in places, filled some glaring gaps in the side, they’ve (mostly) had time to settle and train together through pre-season and there’s still time to strengthen.
Yes we’ve lost a couple of real talents in Knight and McGoldrick, but the squad seems more structured and has a better overall cover throughout the positions, as well as a slightly improved age profile.

I agree about the overall strength of the squad but there is that remaining niggle about the forward options.  What a poor time for Sibley to have been injured right through pre-season because this swift counter- attacking style would suit him down to the ground. A few goals from him and the mood would be lighter.

I bet he's kicking himself (which ain't going to help his recovery any! 😅)

That’s one of the biggest things for me, the majority have had a good pre season together.

AND, the mood looks excellent which can count for so much if we get that right.

Balance, time, cohesion, togetherness, familiarity. All things I think we are streets ahead in compared to 12 months ago. Of course that wasn’t anyone’s fault this time last year, well, not anybody who was still at the club any way.

I think it’s more than just what the team sheet looks like on paper, even though we still have a very good team for League One level. I think we’ll add a couple more, but I also think we’ll have a good season.

We are clearly a work in progress. Warne is still mulling over options & people are being premature in their concerns over our front line…We’ll get a good loan in.

We need a midfielder with teeth and energy.

More confident this season that we’ll rip the League up; Referees will continue to try and thwart us on occasion but I suspect our esprit de corps and big crowds and more numerous options from the bench will make us tick …but be patient!

I think the squad looks more solid and balanced. Some absolute steals in key positions (wingback and Bradley).

Midfield will take care of itself. Smith has more than enough energy to be the annoying disrupter and to engage the press. Bird looks tidy behind the strikers but a specialist in that position is on Warnes shopping list.

I know people are disappointed with the incoming forwards and non more frustrated than Warne himself I’d imagine but personally I look at this:

Defence: league winning quality

Midfield: top 6 quality but lacking depth whilst Bird is used as a 10.

Attack: top 6 quality again*. Don’t think there’s more than six teams with the likes of NML Collins and Washington (in terms of record at this level).
*if we add Waggy or better.

Think there’s every hope for success. Think less than top 6 and Warne has to answer some difficult questions from Clowes.

Somewhere between these two?

Ridiculous, we're only in this league because Morris almost killed the club. Last season was the lowest finish in our entire history.

Why ridiculous?

There is a counter argument to that which is that we only avoided League 1 when Morris was in charge due to all of the hyper inflated transfers he oversaw which we clearly could not afford.

Who's to say if Morris had ran the club on a sustainable basis as it appears Clowes is trying to do now then the result would have been as predicted?

A well ran Derby County isn’t league one.
