That substitution along with the Collins miss could have cost us. We desperately need Knights legs back in midfield. Young lad from Everton needs to toughen up quickly. Collins can play that role for an hour and no more he hasn't enough in the tank. Quite a grind in the end. McGoldrick was perfect for that game for 20 minutes to relieve the pressure . Promising signs.. A couple more quality loans and season should be something to savour.. ? But in the space of five minutes, we missed a glorious chance for 3-0 and then Barnsley scored from nothing. We lost control after that. But Smith used his experience well to win free kicks and slow the game down. That’s how it will be in this league. Yani P Posted August 13, 2022 Share Posted August 13, 2022 Cashin was great but Stearman not far off..he certainly steps up on the rare occasions he is needed.. Collins needs a goal..you can see we are still at pre-season fitness levels in some respects so all these early season wins are a bonus.. I know Sibley gets a massive love in on here but to be fair he wasn't at his best today and did nothing second half..trouble is his replacement hasn't been that great so far. It was bad but not a forceful challenge to warrant a red. Their player’s reaction made it look like a horror challenge, but he was up and running again 30 seconds later when he should have left the field when the physio came on. Srg Posted August 13, 2022 Share Posted August 13, 2022 That was a massive game of two halves. First half was decent. Bird and Hourihane in particular. Second half was really poor. Couldn’t keep hold of the ball at all and really lucky to escape with a win - even though we had a sitter to go 3-0 before the onslaught started. Chalk up the three points, acknowledge it’s early season in ungodly temperature and learn from it. Smith is a better defensive player than Sibley. That’s a fact. And at the time we needed defensive experience. I think the way forward is with Sibley, but that change made sense. In an ideal world though, we bring in a better right-back and Knight goes into midfield. A trio of Bird, Hourihane and Knight would be the best midfield in League One. The move that led to Collins’ chance was beautiful. But we needed to change our shape in the second half but didn’t - shades of last season and that’ll really hurt us away from home. Again.
