Derby County Financial Accounts

"Derby County have today released their accounts for the last financial year which covers the first season the club was out of administration following David Clowes' takeover.

Covering the period until June 30, 2023, Derby reported an operating trading loss of £10.6m out of a bottom line figure of £30.4m. But £19.7m of that amount relates to a statutory write-off of goodwill which is calculated by taking the purchase price of a business and subtracting the difference between the fair market value of assets and liabilities.

Derby's turnover for the 2022/23 season meanwhile was £20.4m, of which £15.1m was driven by ticketing, hospitality and sponsorship. That level of turnover for last season is thought to be only second to Ipswich Town who were subsequently promoted to the Championship.

The accounts also reveal that 20,603 season tickets were sold after the club exited administration with Derby recording an average attendance of 27,259 for the 2022/23 season which was one of the highest in the EFL.

Wages for the period until June 30 were £17.2m but that is a figure which includes all staff from stewards to catering all the way through to players and senior management.

It is understood that Derby's wage bill for the first-team squad last season amounted to £7.3m and that excludes the academy. Under EFL rules, League One clubs, who are in their first year following relegation from the Championship, are allowed to spend 75 per cent of turnover on wages in their first 12 months.

It is known as Salary Cost Management Protocol and Derby's wage bill under this EFL calculation was 42 per cent which underlines Clowes' commitment to running the club sustainably.

Interestingly, Derby made a profit on the disposal of players of £1.6m which is thought to include sell-on clauses that were included in deals for Morgan Whitaker who was sold to Plymouth Argyle by Swansea.

It also includes compensation the club earned for players such as Festy Ebosele and Lee Buchanan who joined Udinese and Werder Bremen respectively. The sale of Krystian Bielik, Jason Knight and Max Bird will not be included until next year's accounts are released.

Derby also had a reported £4.3m cash in the bank at the end of the financial year. The figures also show that Clowes paid a total purchase consideration of £13.2m to Quantuma which covered the running costs of the club during the nine months it was in administration.

Combined with the figure of £19.7m of creditors it had to pay under the EFL rules on exiting administration, Clowes effectively paid £33m to buy Derby when the accounts state it only had £13.1m worth of assets at the time of purchase."

Much as we hate on Quantuma (rightly so on many issues) they did take the job on and did ultimately manage to get Clowes in (I credit Clowes not Quantuma on that though) - Derby County is still a club and that was far from certain for a long time.

It's not that I don't think others couldn't have done better so much as I think the better options didn't want this job because of the state of it, both the amounts owing and the tangled web of Mel Morris "arrangements".

Cheers for all this @RoyMac5. I’m hoping some of the more numbers minded people than myself can give a nice summary of it all. My personal takeaway is how nuts it is that Quantuma got such a chunk of money, and that Clowes/the business plan has us running sensibly, with the player sales to be included in the next lot of figures I wonder does that mean we come out of the restrictions at the end of this season with some cash to spend?

13 million 13 MILLION??? They didn’t do anything but give  a fraudster the best chance to buy our club? Absolutely incredible they get Away with this

That’s not their fees.  It’s everything, including running the club from the point of going into admin to DC taking over.

I hadn't really thought much about the shirt sponsor being "given away" to the NSPCC, but presumably a commercial sponsor would be paying quite a lot of money (£100k+?) to be the main sponsor on the shirt of a club the size of Derby, so donating that spot to the NSPCC would count as a charitable donation and lower our tax bill?

I agree with the Quantuma money, but I suppose we also have to think that supposedly no other 'reputable' Administrators wanted to take the Club on, I'm not sure what would have happened in that case.

Quantuma was allegedly "specialists" in sports club administration weren't they? And they appeared to really struggle.

In which case it would be a fair bet that a common or garden insolvency practitioner would have been an even bigger debacle

Why did we get so little for the 3 players at tribunal? Awful if that's the case and no wonder we cashed in on Max Bird before his deal expired.

I seem to recall that the tribunal deals are quite heavy on staged payments and sell-on fees etc, so it may well be the case that we get more as they play more games or move on to other clubs.

Because Ebosele and Buchanan went to clubs in Europe. Under UEFA rules we only get compensated for their development costs. Whittaker's sell on money was tiny also. No mention of Ebiowe so I assume that is still not settled.

Interesting how were only at 45% turnover/spend when league 1 clubs can be up to 75%.

Be a good question to ask how far close to the limit would Clowes take the playing budget when the restrictions are lifted.

We get tarnished by other clubs around us that were big spenders but it's far from the case.

It also shows how important ticket money and other revenue is at this level if there was any doubt.

Maguire still desperately spinning the message in effort to throw mud at the club. You'll note that none of his posts include the rider "at the end of the last financial year", thereby giving the impression that the figures he's quoting are representative of the current post.

Show me on the Action Man puppet where Derby County hurt you Kieran...

Good point, and as others have said it’s seemingly not just their fees, it’s what they were due as reimbursement for the costs of running the club, just hard not to see that number and think “wow”

Not sure on that, he's been quite complimentary of Clowes and has ranked the accounts as a "B+"
