to attempt an answer to the question.

Showing an intent to enter admin gives protection from creditors for 2 weeks or so.  During that time it is in the best interest of a buyer to try and get a deal done because it is the only thing that can be done to avoid a 12 point penalty.  You've still got all the P&S to face but they have been prompted to move quickly rather than wait for what they may perceive as the best time

A mix of:

  • Heart ruled his head at the wrong times, he wanted the best for the club he supported and wanted to be the one to bring the good times back but that led him to make some very poor business decisions at critical moments.
  • Over inflated opinion of hs ability and an over reliance on a belief that lawyers and accountants could get him out of trouble when he got into it.
  • Misunderstanding of how football works, driven by a belief that he was - in some way - bigger than the organizations that run it. Caused him to get too personal and make too many enemies with the wrong people, even if he may be fundamentally right in a lot of his views.
  • Too much of a 'Las Vegas casino' mentality with the future of the club and little consideration to the consequences of those bets not coming in. Only gamble what you can afford to lose, and don't gamble with what doesn't belong to you (in spirit if not in paperwork).

That’s my faint hope. Feels unlikely given the shortage of cash everywhere but it could be the difference between league 1 and league 2 and take a year or two off our suffering and torture. Guess we will find out !

Jono, the rich have still lots of dosh in fact many have prospered in these difficult time.  I am not so worried by this more how to navigate around the corrupt sharks and find somebody of a standard that the EFL will approve.  I fear they will have great doubts around anyone who is attracted to buy, we do have form in this area.  I guess the L2 issue depends much on whether we get all of our penalties this year.  As someone said, losing to Wendy would see i=us in exactly the same position but now facing relegation to L2

Sorry. Does this mean we might not end up in admin then? (Seems unlikely from the MM interview etc)

it is possible but I expected there would be more discussion on the intent and when there wasn't I was much more worried.  The interview took place in an environment where admin seemed a forgone conclusion

Mel made it sound like him putting us in administration was the best thing for the club. He really had the confidence to own up infront of the supporters and say that the best thing for Derby County Football Club was him putting us in administration.

No, the best thing for the football club would be him paying the debts of the football club and to find an agreement with the EFL. The best thing for him was to put us in administration, therefore taking the workload and liability away from him.

As it stands, we've incurred an additional -12 point deduction on top of anything else that we may pick up and seemingly something that could run for a few more years yet. Another story ran over night thinks we're due to receive a -21 (potentially another 3) this season. With a further 15 point deduction next year. We've also got a transfer embargo for two years.

We know that Buchanan, Bird, Sibley and Knight will be sold. I'm not too concerned about that as I think it's great they're getting out of this mess as they genuinely have a career and a lot of potential. As a Derby fan, I wouldn't want the club to be a weight around these young lad's neck and become the reason they didn't fulfill their potential.

Mel is the worst chairman this club has ever had, he's leaving the club in the worst mess its ever been in - arguably up their with one of the worst messes of any club in the history of the sport. A club without a stadium, which he owns, potentially soon without training facilities huge point deductions with severe transfer embargos that could sink the club into the League Two - similar to Bolton. I think they still own their stadium(?) although I'm not sure.

But.... he's doing it for us. What a truly wonderful guy!

I am fascinated who these 'buyers who will sweep in to buy at a lower price' will be ...?

I hope it will drag on and on and then someone will come in, but I genuinely fear -

1. a great plummet after being asset stripped

2. we get bought by a parcel of numpties with no money whatsoever and even less of a clue of how to run a football club.

Mel’s windfall when involved in world changing industries like cyber dating  and mobile gaming convinced him he was a skilled entrepreneur rather than a bit of a chancer with an eye to an opportunity.

He was fleetingly frank yesterday in admitting that his mistakes were a result of lack of experience.

Who knows, we will see. Most likely candidate is whoever walked away last week and if they do reappear they may well  be in cahoots with MSD

It is possible I suppose.

Until something like that happens and we can see a "Mel got played and had to take the hit to get the new owner in" side of the story I will remain convinced it's "fed up, not paying for it anymore so it can go bust" from Mel. And even if it does transpire that's what's gone on, it's not massivly confidence inspiring in the new owners.

I believe by putting us into administration it relinquishes Mel of any debts. In my opinion I reckon the stumbling block around the takeover is any new owner doesn’t want Mel’s debts and Mel doesn’t want to keep paying them.

Mel could walk away now debt free and he has the stadium.

don't think he has fully paid for the stadium yet but how much is still left to pay is not known by us

it's no one, single, thing, it's complicated and has been going on for a long time    But another fleeting comment yesterday - and I think it was genuine - was very revealing:  it's now clear to him that with him as owner things will not be resolved with the EFL. In other words, it's just got too personal.  Not the way a regulator should run things, but Mel sure did ask for it

Just out of interest, why do you hope it will drag on and on? Surely it would be better if it is resolved as quickly as possible.

Where on earth is the other -15 for next season coming from?!

If we don’t pay all outstanding creditors within 2 years we would be deducted 15 points, a possibility but by no means a certainty and a lot of water to go under the bridge until then.

It was on the KM podcast
