Promotion pitch invasion

Recommended Posts

Just read on the BBC website that Portsmouth have been charged by the EFL with misconduct ( failing to control their supporters )  It was because of the fans pitch  invasion after the Barnsley match in April  which clinched their promotion  Wondering if we will be charged as well for same reasons   🫣🐏

Possibly, although wasn't a Barnsley player allegedly injured during the Portsmouth pitch invasion?

If they charge us then there are no doubt a few others including Wrexham and Ipswich at risk.

Had the same thought and it wouldn't surprise me. They probably have to make a stand at some point because for all the amicable Derby/Carlisle-type invasions, there is a WBA vs Southampton - that could have got really ugly. Imagine the potential carnage with a big local derby game too. Leeds prevented it so the powers that be will probably say it's possible so sort it or we'll punish you. Ours was slightly aggravated by impacting on the actual finish time of the game where they just binned off the last 2 mins for what it was worth. It obviously didn't really matter, but what if that had been on a knife edge ? Invade the pitch and ensure a result ?

It was amazing at the time but on reflection it is probably safer all round to genuinely attempt to prevent it, not just go through the motions.

Why couldn't people simply wait until the game was over? We effectively forced the ref to end the game 2 minutes early and were lucky we got away with that and it was declared full time.

Yes I know that might seem a joyless, boring attitude, but I'd rather not have more points deductions or see players get hurt.

Why couldn't people just stay in the stands so everyone could see and enjoy the presentation and a lap of honour by the players and management instead of that embarrassing moment in the directors box when nobody knew what to do. Then some people went back, some stayed, so some others went back on. It was chaos just because people can't behave and do as they are asked.

There, I seem even more boring and joyless than you.

This was raised on another thread. No complaint was raised at the time, probably because nothing bad happened. Portsmouth being investigated to the FA was mentioned the very next day. I'd be astonished if Derby were charged.

I said pretty much this on the day.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

Pompey fans are unsure if their charge is for the pitch invasion after the winning goal or after the final whistle, or both.

In Derbys case, supporters around the edge of the pitch were impacting on the referees assistants being able to do their jobs without obstruction. Did this lead to the ref blowing the final whistle (2 mins) early ?

Whatever the reason, he did blow the final whistle before any supporters entered the field of play so the game did finish before the 'invasion'.

Recent examples of pitch invasion charges include Carlisle being fined £5,000 and Sheff Weds £50,000 after their playoff semi finals last year against Bradford and Peterborough.

Reading were given a suspended 3 point deduction last season after a pitch invasion caused their game against Port Vale to be abandoned.

There are further examples at the end of this season of on pitch celebrations at Man City, Southampton, Bolton, Wrexham, Mansfield, Chesterfield, Stockport and Leicester.

Football Authorities couldn't hand out fines and warnings to these 9 clubs and then relegate Derby, could they.

And Birmingham - slightly more aggressive than the ones done in celebration.

Absolutely zero chance of that happening. As you’ve pointed out, there is no precedent for a points deduction even at Reading where the sole purpose of the invasion was to disrupt the game. No points deduction, not even suspended I reckon, but possibly a fine. If we’re lucky, just a telling off.

How much appetite will the authorities really have to punish these?

They will have to because they aren't in a position to not do something (Gibson will probably sue them if they don't etc) but the scenes of celebration are not the scenes of thousands of thugs causing danger and trouble.

I would imagine with Portsmouth it was because there was a player injured which there was not at our place. It was all in good spirits, no-one was harmed and it looked and felt amazing.

Remember this is the EFL that Portsmouth are dealing with don't expect logic, common sense or consistency in any decision the EFL make.

I`d be astonished if we don`t get docked 21 points ? . Parry and Gibson will be getting there heads together to sort it out !
