Good line up, think we only differ on Watson. Do you see Hutchinson's future at LW? Whenever I've seen him in u23s he's been a sitting midfielder, not unlike Bird with his composure on the ball.

I’m not sure about left wing but again all these discussions have to understand how WR wants us to play….so he’s definitely not a ‘winger’ in the traditional sense, but he clearly wants to roll inside and allow full backs to get outside him and rotate with the other 2 att mids.

Him and Sibley both like to get into the 10 position and beyond the forward and I think eventually they could work well together.

Here are there heat maps from the Salford game which saw them have 6 shots (3 each) and shows them occupying either wing and the 10 area.

The Sky coverage, and especially the red button coverage, was so poor I can’t say I’m overly bothered.

Championship television coverage is desperate for a channel to take it that will know what they are doing with it and not treat it as a cash cow.

There's no way Rooney will drop Lawrence for this game.

Sadly he won’t drop our captain but I like it.

After the signings today I have changed my mind. We will win 0-5 in a triumphant display of Rooneyball. Jagielka will be an absolute brick wall at the back and Baldock will score a perfect hat-trick.

Unrelated, but I've just used an entire can of spray paint on a ladder that is being used as a prop for my wedding. The fumes are quite something.

Pointless paying for a full sky package with the amount of games they dont show these days

Yep disappointing was worth it with the number of midweek games hopefully red button coverage not ended permanently

That is spot on ? Maybe Lawrence dropping slightly deeper. Did you build that through their heat maps from the last game?

I give credit to Rooney & Co. for staying to see the job through, but I really wish they would just stick to a simple formation with wing play and overlapping full backs. The players we have available are just not good enough to be trading positions all game.

It might have worked for Rooney in his career, but he had Paul Scholes and Ronaldo around him to make it work. It doesn't work with a team average second tier players.

Heatmap was closer to this:

Roos
Stearman   Davies
Byrne Bird   Lawrence   Morrison Shinnie
Ebosele                                         Forsyth
Kazim

The thing is I can see the idea behind what they are trying to do tactically but I'm not convinced the personnel. To get what Rooney is trying to do to work I think we'd need at least one of Stearman or Davies replaced by someone who is good on the ball (ideally both), Shinnie dropped with Bird moving to the left DM slot and a right footed DM coming in, Forsyth needs to be replaced by someone who is faster and arguably so does Byrne, the right sided attacking player could do with being a left footer and a gooald threat and we need someone up front who looks to spin in behind (probably). It's possibly that if all the deals come through then it could all work out as something like the following I think could effectively deploy the tactics Rooney is trying to make work:

Roos

Ebosele/Byrne Jagielka Mengi Buchanan

Bielik/Garner  Bird

Sibley      Lawrence    Morrison

Baldock/Stretton

Whether or not we see this and whether it's the best way to go about it is a different story, although tactically I do think there is merit if the right personnel are in place.
