Peterborough vs Bolton

Recommended Posts

You might find both sides play with complete changed sides.

Neither side will want to get injured players going into the playoffs.

We do know the Bolton boss has settled for the playoffs before Posh did.

Come on you negative lot - we are 1pt away from promotion, at home in front of 30,000+, against a team already relegated with nothing to play for.

It’s going to be really interesting to see what Peterborough do in terms of team selection. I think Ferguson may have hoped they could rest players in the “easier” game and still get something from it.

His comments before suggested he would only go weaker v Cheltenham, as he said that was “his only chance to rest players.”

But now they’re pretty much 4th no matter what, why would they go stronger in a game that has even less riding on it for them?

They can’t exactly handpick who they play in the playoffs either, there’s 4 teams that can still finish 5th.

I understand they’ve had a tough run of games, I just can’t understand the thought process behind it all.

I think the more likely scenario is that they start with a strong team but make plenty of subs at HT if it's not looking good for the autos.

If we ended up losing 2-0 and Bolton ended up fielding an under-strength team against Posh Reserves and end up winning 1-0 they'd be kicking themselves well into the playoffs.

Either way, we should put all of this beyond doubt by going 3-0 up inside the first 10 minutes. F*** what Peterboro and Bolton do.

They’re going to need to win by 4 goals on Saturday in order to overtake Bolton. Given it’s a bit of a lottery as to whether it’s better to finish 3rd or 4th I reckon they’ll be resigned to finishing 4th. Our best hope (only as our insurance policy as I can’t see us losing on Saturday) is that they will want some momentum going into the play offs (there may be some negative psychological effect of being beaten badly by Bolton even if they do play the kids) and they may not want to rest the players too much and risk them getting a bit rusty.

My best guess is that they’ll field a reasonable squad but the players may not be going full pelt through fear of injury. Maybe Bolton will be doing the same. They’re probably more confident that Derby won’t lose than we are - especially the fans.

It’s 7 goals actually Tam not 4 and there’s no way Posh do that. Wanderers will probably now start with a strong side and see how it goes but even our “weakened” side would still be stronger than Posh if Evatt doesn’t want to risk things. I was just wondering though will the Paul Simpson factor play a part, given his history with you will he really want his team to deny you your promotion?

Glad someone else has noticed this.

What Peterborough and Bolton do should be completely irrelevant.

Are you new?. 😉

When have we ever done stuff the easy way?

I hear you, yet I still refuse to believe that we will lose to Carlisle.

It's not impossible that can come back to haunt me like many posts have, remove all bias, looking at the situation as a team A and team B, no way anyone will be expecting team A to lose this.

Pinched from the Posh forum, from a Bolton fan.

Can you play the same team on Saturday please because if nothing else it will put the frighteners under Derby. Whilst it’s unlikely Carlisle will do them you just never know in football. We’ve all been there, games we needed to get a result in but the longer it goes the more the pressure increases. A 3-0 win for Wanderers against your reserves and Carlisle pop in a 95th minute winner would go down very well in North Lancashire. ?

Meanwhile, in the real world.

………………….here’s Ferguson and Evatt! 👍😂

I'm just trying to decide what's worse - you're appalling arithmetic or your misplaced arrogance?

If Posh win by 4, then they’ll be third. The GD is 7, but obviously if Posh’s goes up, Bolton’s goes down.

Either way that isn’t going to happen. Hopefully Peterborough don’t set up in a way that’ll see them get hammered themselves, as I don’t see how going into the playoffs on the back of that is a positive.

If ultimately we end up 3rd on Saturday, I’ll only be angry at ourselves, however it would be nice for the nerves and the nails not to be going into added time level with Carlisle whilst Bolton are 4-0 up.

You are actually Evatt in disguise, aren't you? 😂

Absolutely

They both know that there is little point trying to prepare for and play a game that has an very teeny slight chance might end up with an automatic promotion. They'd only do that if it were in their hands (ie no matter what Derby did on Saturday, they could finish second by winning) - but it's not. So that would be a crazy tactic

Realistically the only thing on their minds psychologically is that they will both finish 3rd and 4th, and so they won't play each other in the Play-Off semis. The only way they can sensibly treat Saturday is as a warm-up game for the Play-Off final at Wembley

As others have pointed out, you’re wrong.

I look at it this way. The club is 90 + injury time minutes away from promotion. The players won't need motivating by anybody. They will be ultra professional and totally concentrated on the job in hand. They will have 30K fans on their side plus 2K Carlisle here for a day out and expecting nowt from the game. We're going up and Satdeh afternoon, evening and night is going to get very messy in Derby.

See you all there... even if it will all be a blur come Sunday morning 🙂
