Pele

I guess come 1970 he might have been past his peak but that team revolved around him, they played the most beautiful, sublime and joyful football. A God has passed.  An icon, a legend and beyond anything else, a sportsman, the definition of a star. Sad day.

We see stats, great goals, skill and all such from Messi and Ronaldo but with Pele you saw the unfettered joy of a man with the ball at his feet doing wonderful things.

I have to say I am more upset about hearing this than I thought I would be.

I never saw him play, never saw him beyond his role as an ambassador really, but understand he was the greatest player of not just his time, but arguably ever.

He’s been a living legend for my whole life, and now he’ll live on in the memories of football fans for many years.

My son always goes on about how great he was and has a Brazil shirt with Pele 10 on his back…

A true legend, who will be missed by the world.

I was fortunate enough to see him in the 1966 World Cup Group game at Goodison Park, unfortunately only briefly due to the horrendous tackle on him by Portugal's left half Morais. But that was long enough to appreciate his sublime skills, and he more than lived up to  his already prodigious footballing reputation.

RIP Pele.

I think Pele was kicked out of the 1962 and 1966 World Cups after winning the 1958 one.
It was the only way to stop him.

The world's greatest footballer.

Viagra's finest ssalesperson (apparently he got ripped off for all his money and there's a whole generation in America only know him from Viagra advertising)

Sad news to hear of his passing ☹️

Not great to hear that he got stiffed from selling Viagra too.

Im hazy on the details, but yeah he got ripped off and ended up on Viagra advertising when he should've been able to live out his life comfortably after retiring (it's what I heard anyway).

Can’t go along with the idea Pele did it first. Football was around for half a century before Pele even kicked a ball. You can’t say he was the first to do a cruyff turn, bicycle kick, score from the halfway line, take on about five players before scoring.

From all accounts though he was the greatest of his generation and better than all of those before him.

We have it ingrained in us that Brazil are the kings of football. The ‘just like Brazil’ thought will never go away. As kids we always recognized Pele as a symbol of football greatness. His name will endure. A true legend.

Much as I loved Pele, what an absolutely ridiculous idea. Most countries have one national stadium at most - which they’re unlikely to want to rename - forget Wembley, let’s call it the Pele Stadium - yeah right….

As for other major stadiums, has the numpty not seen the way they’re named according to sponsorship arrangements? Can you imagine, for example, Arsenal renaming the Emirates as the Pele Stadium and throwing away many millions on sponsorship just to keep the prat in charge of FIFA happy?

The bloke may not be as corrupt as Blatter, (thoughI i wouldn’t be surprised if some evidence of dodgy dealing feathering his own pocket appears at some part in the future) but he’s certainly in the same league as far as stupidity goes…..
