The Sibley Enigma

I think 4-2-3-1 would be the obvious formation for this side, but we don't have a single right back (thanks EFL soft embargo)

We had one sitting on the bench last night. He is good enough in an experienced back 4, but Warne prefers to play someone who isn't a fullback. Similar to playing Sibley at LWB. I'm not sure what is going on there because neither were particularly good at their new positions. So, why?

Part of the problem with Sibley is the weight of expectation.  He had an immediate impact - a wonder goal on his first start in the last pre-lockdown game, then a hat-trick on the first game back.  In both of these there’s no pressure.  But because of that it becomes expected, and it’s not just Sibley it’s any young player who has the start he did.

Since then he suffered from not having a manager who trusts him.  Under WR and LR he was limited to being a bit-part player.  He had the odd 10 minute substitute appearance when we were losing so the expectation is he needs to change the game.  Or the odd start, again there’s excitement and expectation.  And because he hasn’t been trusted, he’s probably putting too much pressure on himself and trying too hard.

He’s had a few starts now and I hope PW keeps him in the team but in the midfield.  He almost needs to be told “unless you get injured, you’re playing the next 10 games”.  Give him confidence so that he knows he can afford to make a mistake.

That could be a lot of talented footballers, especially young ones. A bit like when we had Klinkladze in the team, we need to be able to 'afford' to play them because of what they provide. Can you imagine Kinky as a LWB?! ?

Definitely catchy! Think simple would be Sammy winnall song as just need his name instead. Would be miffed if new youngster got brilliant song on first appearance everyone instantly sings.

Yet only Chester made more successful tackles than him today. Doesn't bode well when "the worst tackler he's ever seen" is winning the ball back more than most others on the pitch.

Maybe the problem is putting an AM at LWB. ?

This.

How many times does he ever get to play a sustained run of matches, as an attacking midfielder behind a front man or pairing? Don’t want to over defend him, he does always seem to be the fall guy when the team struggles though, when he’s often asked to play out of position and people wonder why he’s ineffective.

Its not just him - seems like all managers shove those that come through the academy wherever they like so new additions can play in their favoured position

Yes, it's usually the 1884 lot, I think. They keep us going at away games and have a much broader repertoire than the South Stand!

Cambridge just seemed to be the fun of new Osula song and where we were at Ipswich couldnt make out what all the songs the constant singers sang were!
