Is there anything to stop Malcolm waiting a bit to sign a new contract with us first so that if he goes we get some large wonga? In fact is there anything to stop any of our players doing that?

I love the idea but why would they do that? The fact clubs aren’t having to pay  a fee for them means they will get more in wages. Loyalty is dead in football, wouldn’t expect any of them to do us any favours.

Not if the players wait for the takeover to complete surely?

Malcolm, do you want £30k a week at Crystal Palace or Manchester United or are you prepared to wait for a contract worth £3.68 a week from Derby County, so long as there are no further issues with the takeover. Then play in League 1 where the defenders will try and end your career early.

No brainer - it's a chance to continue playing with the Rams ?

Thats part of the problem .  Back in the 80's we were able to retain a striker Arsenal wanted to sign and bring in players like Micklewhite, Gregory- who'd played in the FA cup final two years previous, Hindmarch who'd captained Sunderland etc  and get a young Blades to turn down a move to Man Utd.  Playing for a traditionally bigger club or getting first team games was enough to play 2 leagues lower on a third of the wages.  They ain't happening today.

They don't have to stay with us just because they sign a contract. If they are good enough they will still get an offer it's just that we would get a fee.

Completely agree mate. What we can offer is first team games, he’s basically guaranteed to play most games as long as he applies himself. For most of the clubs linked with Hel be playing U23s football again but Hel be on 3x the money, it’s a great position for him to be in, either way is a win it just depends how he wants to define his career.

I hope when they do a review into admin rules, being allowed to extend contracts for academy players is seriously looked at. If a deal wasn’t forthcoming we could have quite easily have started next season without being able to field a team. Not only does the rule hamper the clubs but it also displaces young men during a very vulnerable stage of their development, I assume we’re not even allowed to offer scholarships so there’s going to be a whole generation of kids at the club that have no idea where or if they will be playing next season.

Think it'll be feasible as of next week buddy. Be great to see some of our young'uns doing just that as we've been haemorrhaging talented youngsters for some time now, though not always avoidably so.

Anyone who thinks Ebiowei will sign a new contract here needs their head checking. A player with that level of raw talent available on a free will have all the big clubs in his ear. His agent will no doubt be pushing for a move to the big boys where both Ebiowei (and, crucially, the agent themselves) will get paid a boatload. Losing him for free is yet another (hopefully the last) devastating impact of Mel Morris’ reign.

Only hope of him being here next season is a loan back. Hopefully he goes to somewhere high up which he’s not ready for yet, and we can bring him back to get some more experience. He’d tear League One apart.

The Man Utd link makes sense with McClaren moving there, but I’d urge him against him. They seem to ruin players careers there. If he’s staying in England, I’d go to Spurs if I was him. Got a good record with youth coming through, and you look at players like Sessegnon going out on loan and then breaking into the team, rather than disappearing into to the ether. Either that or move abroad. Don’t throw your career away Malcolm.

Why would any player sign a contract just so the club get a transfer fee? Give your head a wobble!

Oh Malcolm sign a £5k a week contract with us just so that when Man City try to buy you we can over price you in the knowledge we either get a huge over inflated fee (just because they can) or we over price you so much it puts clubs off and we get to keep you for a snip!

Oh yeah, also, if they do sign for you £10 mill, we get a nice little earner and you get £10k a week and £100k signing on fee instead of us getting nothing and you getting £30k a week and a signing on fee that means you or none of your family ever have to work again…..

Yeah tough one.

He's basically correct though - it'd take some character to turn down the opportunity. If he has any wise folk around him, they might point to the tiny number of first team games that Kaide Gordon and Liam Delap have played since they left Derby for the bright lights of Liverpool and Moss Side, or how many kids go to such clubs for big salaries yet end up having unfulfilled careers and mental health problems and so on.... but you know that just isn't going to happen and we're going to be robbed yet again by the iniquitous EPPP that the EFL imposed on its clubs.

Best we can hope for is that we get him back on loan, perhaps get a couple of good young loanees in addition and get as many of our remaining youngsters on rock-solid contracts ASAP.

Yes, I agree. I was just being idealist.

No not at all. Sorry if it sounds that way. But it annoys me when people think it’s as simple as just sign a contract to allow Derby to get a fee when the ruthlessness of football would come jumping to the fore and someone (most likely the club - a business) would use it to their benefit.

No one ever ‘plays nicely’. A nice little one year deal and someone will under offer on the basis of only buying out a 1 year contract and you couldn’t have rated him that highly. A lovely 3 year deal and the club would over value on the basis of “look how highly we rated him”!

Malcolm or any other player will have an agent who’s job it is to protect the players internet and try and give him the best most lucrative career possible. Normally that will come from the best sound football advice which will drive the finances longer term. But sometimes there’s an opportunity to ensure financial security before the player has barely started his career.

Trust me, the clubs generally don’t give a f*** about the player when push comes to shove. Derby are no different.
