UEFA Euro 2024 Thread

If that performance was in the first two games you'd probably be quite happy with that. (As a starter)

It's the other two stinkers that make it look worse. And should we go out in the last 16 then the whole tournament will look like a summer holiday piss up.

Things did pick up having players who stretch the game. You just don't really get the feeling that it will be a thing going forward.

Mainoo surely grabbed his spot at least?

One win between all the teams in this group. What a w**k group.

Definitely. If it went back to the old format of 2 go through and 2 go out, Slovenia would have had to commit bodies forward and made the game more interesting. But because they knew a draw would be enough, they sat back in and did nothing for the majority of the game.

This format was rubbish in 2021 and it's still rubbish now. There's no way a team should be playing for a draw on the final game in a group stage to progress in the tournament.

Palmer has livened things up a bit - but why did Southgate have to wait so long to make the positive change?

image.png.e31870f47661b7868bc0eb845a591e31.png 😁 it's tournament football at it's best for Southgate, He's done what he set out to do...win the division, My concern is a lack of chances/goals and that's including the Iceland a friendly, We lack a Pirlo that can unlock a stubborn Slovenia, This lot can play better if given some freedom...like attack the wings.

Jeez, that was like pulling teeth.  How he plays some of the most attacking footballers in the country then coaches them to play sideways and back, and to not run forward is beyond me. Bellingham too busy playing against his Ego. Kane so slow. Mainoo tried but zero runners. Palmer immediately made a difference and Gordon with his first touch looked to, shock, horror go forward. Sure he'll be taken aside and quietly asked what the hell was he thinking. Dull, dull, dull.

With the current results it looks like England are on to play Spain in the 1/4 final.

Spain are a top 8 side.

So if we beat them, regardless of how we do it, Southgate and the England team should be applauded.

Think we play Italy in the QF by the looks of it. Spain are on the other side of the draw aren't they?

Either that or the BBC fixtures tracker makes as much sense as Gareth's tactics.

I might fancy us against Italy, but no chance in hell this side beats Spain.

Perhaps it's the format of the early stages of the tournament which encourages such sterile, turgid, safety-first anti-football.

24 teams whittled down to 16 after the group stages means that' in 4 out of 6 cases, third place is 'good enough'. Just 1 positive result out of 6 in England's group - this is becoming the norm in these top-heavy, bloated tournaments.

We beat the worst Germany side in 2 decades at Wembley.

The same Germany that Mexico and South Korea beat in 2018.

They weren’t a top 10 side in the world at the time. Even Mexico were better.

Apologies for not realising that your top 8 changed in each tournament to fit your narrative. Even though you name checked Germany in another response, but added a different condition there about home soil.

So to sum up, we haven't beaten a top 8 (going into that tournament based on your ratings) side OR one on the traditional top 8 on foreign soil. In a knockout match. In your lifetime.

That is probably because, our players were vastly overated for years by a moronic fanbase and media. Then in Southgate's time we a) didn't play any in 2018 as lost to Croatia in Semis b) only played Italy in 21, and lost on pens c) Lost in a very close match to France with a Kane pen miss d) haven't played anyone yet in knockouts and if we do beat Italy or Belguim, you'll then say they aren't top 8.

His interview has riled me even more, delusional stubborn dinosaur of a man. He thought we played well and should take our chances am I living in a parallel universe?

I think this is why watching England in a group of people is always a terrible experience.
