The ball was almost out for a goal kick when the contact was made; there was no way the forward would've got the ball. Therefore no penalty.

Does the rule say a penalty (or direct free kick anywhere on the pitch come to think of it) should not be given  just because the player has lost control before the offence is committed? I didn’t think it did. Wildsmith deliberately lifted his leg to impede the forward. Stonewall penalty for me.
