I am not so sure. We are a different prospect being Championship/L1. The academy is the one place that potentially generates surplus income. .. hey, as you imply none of us knows.

And if we get a better business approach maybe we can sell some players for 'market value' rather than giving them away? Bring back the Seth Johnson type fee deals! ?

It would be a good, cheap alternative way for him to advertise again.

He is about to open House of Fraser and Flannels in Derby, to add to Sports Direct. Mike Ashley will already have a big presence in our City Centre.

I have no problem with our stadium being called the Flannels Arena or House of Fraser Stadium, either will be better than the Ipro stadium thG Sam Rush gave us.

I said on here 2 years ago I could see Mike Ashley buying us, it just seems a good fit for some reason.

He's also opening the old BHS store up for one of his businesses i've heard.

Maybe its the right man at the right time, major investment in Derby City centre and DCFC together?

Absolutely, it’s like comparing apples with a traffic cone. It is the only remaining significant cost that can be cut though, so it’ll be interesting to see what happens.

is losing the academy ideal? Far from it, but if it’s the price that needs to be paid for saving the club, then reluctantly I’m all for it. (Or at least reduce funding to below category 1. You don’t absolutely need cat 1 to produce promising players)

But the academy is providing a conveyor belt of talent that will save us in having to buy players or enable us to sell for big money. The last thing that I would cut….

Ashley? Bring it on we are going off Newcastle fans thoughts on the bloke, fans that believe Newcastle should be challenging for the prem year in year out. He's a proven business man who turns around failing brands. He will be in it for a profit and only clubs making a real profit are prem clubs so that's where his aim will be. We need to be realistic of the position we are in now, we are in serious danger of going bang so anything that prevents it will do

Hopefully it can get done soon as I'm sure he will want to tie our better players down to longer contracts rather than them walking for free.

We should not let the views of Newcastle fans determine our opinion. They have been deluded for many years that they are a big club and should be competing in the Champions league expecting investment to suit.

Well if you sat in st James Park for a big PL game you could be forgiven for thinking they were a big club. They certainly will become a big club now - their owners are putting an international group together - like the City Group. They will be a thorn in Spurs’ and Arsenal’s side very soon

That is one thing Ashley would ensure.  How many times have we debated on here about how little we've valued and sold our players for. Ashley is all about profit and would tell other clubs to do one if he felt he was being mugged.

I agree with you, but if the club is losing money, and the new owners are unwilling to accept that, where else do you make savings?
you could also argue that a Cat 1 academy isn’t strictly necessary. Look at Forest, and the academy players they’ve produced in recent years without Cat 1 accreditation.

im not calling for the academy to be scrapped, I hope it isn’t. I just wonder where savings can be made to make the club more sustainable

We could do with this approach in buying players without a doubt as we've paid a lot for players we end up not being able to give away. I would say that we have generally sold players for decent money in the past 15 years or so as few players have gone on to show they are worth more than we got for them, with Ince and Vydra being standout sales.

This.

Plus whilst Ashley's business morals might not be the best, I'd like @IslandExile and @Dimmu et al to tell me which extremely rich capitalist they favour? As has been pointed out GSE appointed Porn Jewell! ?

Give it a rest please @RoyMac5. You are clearly spoiling for a fight.

I have already said that very few wealthy entrepreneurs, if any, have a clean ethical record.

I have no idea of the dealings of other potential buyers but Ashley's practices are in the public domain.

We are both agreed that the important thing - to all of us - is that the club is saved and continues to exist.

Now, please drop it and don't do like you did over Cocu and harp on about it in each and every one of your posts. It spoils what are, otherwise, good and interesting arguments. Thank you.

Maybe Ashley is missing owning a club. He doesn't exactly need the money Does he. Maybe he wants to make a better go of it without entitled fans.

I'd like for him to spend some cash, sure but I didn't enjoy watching us spend 4mill on Anya etc. Infrastructure is in place for us. We need a good sensible scouting system. We've not had a good one since Burley's days of buying hidden gems. Sensible spending and continue developing the excellent academy.

no wonder Appleby came out the other day trying to rush things through, this has clearly slowed it down again

Even if Appleby had been named preferred bidder his bid would then have been sent to the creditors to accept or reject. There’s no saying the creditors would have accepted applebys bid of 30 million when bbc stated they want 50 million which is what apparently Ashley is going to bid to satisfy creditors. So it could have been held up even longer if the creditors turned down applebys bid and he was anxious to pay more and was the only one left. We need competition to drive up the price and give applebys group something to think about

i want an owner that keeps DCFC afloat. I’m not ambitious about being in the PL at all costs. It’s a fantasy league with show ponies trying to add to their stable of Bentleys etc

I’d be happy with a side like we have now.   committed, energetic and have desire to win. No big names please.

My wish would be that the so called elite teams form their own super league and leave English football to be reclaimed as a fair and even sport.
