Not sure there’s any certainty other than those two being old and slow. Anyone who watched us last year, pre-season or Saturday should be able to identify the primary missing attribute was pace. Signing a short, old, slow striker to get after Ward’s crosses seems like the polar opposite of what we need with the budget we have.

I don’t disagree, but a short, old, slow striker is almost certainly what we will end up with. Really hope I am wrong.

Crazy idea maybe but why not give Brown a chance instead of Sharpe or Rhodes? Would offer something different, cheap and with potential sell on value. I mean it's L1 not the champions league after all so it would seem possible that the best striker in our academy might do a job for the first team maybe? If we have to go for either Sharpe or Brown for the season I know who I would like the club to give the chance to.

Crazy idea only because Warne needs his team to go up this season. If he doesn’t achieve that he will be toast with many fans. He isn’t going to chance a young, raw striker when he thinks Sharp or Rhodes offers him greater certainty of short term gain.

Would that have been the case if we had won though.

I can’t answer that obviously, but I guess a little less. There is however a discernible movement on this forum over recent weeks. There are seem to be a lot more beginning to doubt his methods and abilities. He might not be on borrowed time with Clowes, but his support on here is showing some signs of ebbing.

I bet you could have named most of them!

I think that true, but I am beginning to sense that there are a much larger number of Rams fans who are beginning to doubt the abilities of Warne. Not everyone questioning our signings, potential signings, and style of play is a rabid keyboard warrior. He is getting much closer to dividing fan opinion than ever. We do need more walk and less talk from him.

  5. Well, after 13 hours of overall travel, I have arrived back on the south coast having experienced 102 minutes of ‘live Warneball’.  My previous viewing of Warneball has all been from the comfort of my armchair, thank god.

Now, as a few might have picked up, I am not a great fan of Warne, but we didn’t lose yesterday because of him, we lost because two stupid avoidable mistakes gifted Wigan their victory. Equally I could see some sense of system/play yesterday - the players had been pretty well drilled, and seemed to give their all for the coaching team. They all tried hard (except NML) to press out of possession, and out of possession I thought we generally played well, particularly when we had some time after attacking to get ourselves back in to a 442 shape; e.g. from Wigan goal kicks or where Wigan didn’t try to quickly counter.

The problem we had was that our two best pressers, Collins and Bird, I think ended up nullifying their overall effectiveness to actually do what their roles in the team actually were. They ran themselves ragged. The other problem was where Wigan did counter at speed when we lost possession up the field, our 352 (or3421) was so easily played through/bypassed because we left huge gaps for them to run in to, and we had no one with pace to help recover the situation. Bradley in particular looked like he was towing a caravan, but Hourihane, Smith, Cashin and Nelson looked painfully sluggish given it was the first game of the season.

The squad we had last season, and the one recently assembled, still does not suit a pressing system, nor a 352 when we are being attacked. Not sure Waghorn, Rhodes, or a new No. 10, are going to address that problem either. I think the current squad assembled would be better playing 442, or any other system as long as we had 4 at the back. If Warne insists on playing 3 at the back, we need someone with both pace and energy to do the dirty work in front of them.

I am boring myself, so won’t type on. But in summary not sure I will be rushing up to Derby again too soon, especially where we are playing teams occupying one of the top 10 positions in the league. I can see us again this season not winning against a lot of those better teams based on the set-up Warne prefers to play.

As a Madri drinker with zero shame, I can honestly say I would drink it even if it was called Burto from Burton.

I was given an early tip off by @Srg to give it a go once it's out there, first place I found it was in Hull.

12 months later it's exploded everywhere.

I'm under no illusion it's basically a stronger Coors, as an ex Coors drinker it's perfect.

I get that drinking something mainstream that's available in most pubs and supermarkets isn't a cool thing to admit publicly these days but there you go.

Signing of the summer this is.

If you like Madri fresh from the pump can I suggest you try drinking it again after it has passed through your body. I think you will find it will taste at least twice as nice.

Twitter miles better than those two for what I'm trying to do. It will be my face on the account, not my company. Already got plenty of channels that are doing okay at bringing leads in for the company.

I'm basically trying to do what these guys are doing but for glamping:

None of his permanent signings have played a competitive match for Derby yet, so that is a ridiculous argument.

Yet again we are going down the strawman route. Being disappointed we can't spend £300k on a player after bringing in £2-3m in fees isn't espousing £6m on Bradley Johnson.

I'm tired of anything other than fawn eyed adulation being treated as treason or heresy.

It's an interesting point. In terms of a footballing education though, I think Bird will have learned a lot from playing under Warne and working on aspects of his game that maybe didn't come so naturally to him before. So on the one hand, yes, his preferred playing style might suit the Rosenior set-up more than Warne's, but at the same time I think he's developed more/widely during the last 12 months and it'll have stood him in good stead.

Warne also indicated in the Sportscene interview that he's fully intending to play Bird further forward and that he sees this as a selling point in terms of hoping to keep him at the club. Might actually be a more attractive prospect for him than how he'd be used at Hull (?)

I too think it is good for his footballing education to have played under Warne, and he will have learnt something from him and his style of play, and similarly from his time with Lampard (brief) and Rooney too. I think Bird looks at his best and is more effective though when playing in a more controlled passing way that Wassall, Cocu and Rosenior offered.

Is another year of Warne going to help his development - no.  The way we have either had to play or chose to play over the last 2 seasons has not played to his strengths. Is another year with Warne going to help Derby - yes. Good player, and it seems to me a fine, committed young man.

He will end up playing somewhere higher than Derby and Hull, and higher than Knight, in the football pyramid.

And yet in my opinion this pre-season and some of last is the best we've seen of Max Bird.

He looks fit doesn't he in pre-season. Last season, he carried some injuries, but he being my favourite player at the club I didn't think he had an overly good season personally. Some glimpses of his talent, but he really isn't ideally suited to League 1 scrappy football.

It's ok, your posts are very one track these days. We know what you think.

    So yours aren't?

Seem to be a number who don't like my opinion. Thats ok. Doesnt worry me a bit. Stick me on ignore if you dont want to engage.

Conversely, playing further forward with more freedom, and potentially scoring more goals, could be more helpful to his career progression.

Might be where Hull are going to play him?

Nobody knows, and it is only my opinion, but if I was a promising, technical 22 year old ballplayer, with a good passing range, and 150 games behind me at one club, I might very well want to look to join a team/coach where my skills might be better used and enhanced.  You will no doubt not agree, and thats fine, but imo Warneball is unlikely to bring the best out of Max.
