Actually he's an above average league 1 striker, which reflects pretty accurately to where we have fallen to as a club. I don't think he is the answer either, but I saw a player on Saturday giving his all, and doing much of what his coach wanted in terms of pressing and chasing the ball when out of possession. He probably could have been more effective/goal threatening if he were allowed to simply goal hang.

Well, after 13 hours of overall travel, I have arrived back on the south coast having experienced 102 minutes of ‘live Warneball’.  My previous viewing of Warneball has all been from the comfort of my armchair, thank god.
Now, as a few might have picked up, I am not a great fan of Warne, but we didn’t lose yesterday because of him, we lost because two stupid avoidable mistakes gifted Wigan their victory. Equally I could see some sense of system/play yesterday - the players had been pretty well drilled, and seemed to give their all for the coaching team. They all tried hard (except NML) to press out of possession, and out of possession I thought we generally played well, particularly when we had some time after attacking to get ourselves back in to a 442 shape; e.g. from Wigan goal kicks or where Wigan didn’t try to quickly counter.
The problem we had was that our two best pressers, Collins and Bird, I think ended up nullifying their overall effectiveness to actually do what their roles in the team actually were. They ran themselves ragged. The other problem was where Wigan did counter at speed when we lost possession up the field, our 352 (or3421) was so easily played through/bypassed because we left huge gaps for them to run in to, and we had no one with pace to help recover the situation. Bradley in particular looked like he was towing a caravan, but Hourihane, Smith, Cashin and Nelson looked painfully sluggish given it was the first game of the season.
The squad we had last season, and the one recently assembled, still does not suit a pressing system, nor a 352 when we are being attacked. Not sure Waghorn, Rhodes, or a new No. 10, are going to address that problem either. I think the current squad assembled would be better playing 442, or any other system as long as we had 4 at the back. If Warne insists on playing 3 at the back, we need someone with both pace and energy to do the dirty work in front of them.
I am boring myself, so won’t type on. But in summary not sure I will be rushing up to Derby again too soon, especially where we are playing teams occupying one of the top 10 positions in the league. I can see us again this season not winning against a lot of those better teams based on the set-up Warne prefers to play.

It's one game, and it's important not to overreact, but that was fu**ing abject at every level. We were one-dimensional, slow, unfit, and worst of all we didn't even execute our own plan well. We gifted Wigan two goals, but every time they broke through the midfield screen, they looked dangerous and could have scored 3 or more today. Nelson looked uncomfortable on the ball, he isn't a WCB in a million years, constantly passing back, making us lose the initiative, and Bradley doesn't have the legs to cover the ground needed in the role he played today. That's what led to the mistake for the first goal, a negative pass which put pressure on Bradley which then led to a Wyke rounding Wildsmith.
Wigan killed us in the transitions, and there were gaping holes in the middle of the park, which any half-decent team would thread through. Seen towards the end of the first half but also early in the first half, which was an end-to-end show. But it wasn't just in defence and transition where we were poor. The attack was absolutely woeful. The lack of positive forward passing combined with the slow tempo and static movement made the crosses so so easy to defend against. I can't remember more than 2 times we actually tested their goalkeeper seriously.
It isn't just the performance that lacked passion, creativity, or decisiveness, but the tactics that led us to our downfall, failing to create any clear-cut chances and, at times, leaving us wide open. The lack of urgency towards the end and the dearth of options from the bench make it clear we're in no state to be challenging for promotion if this is the tenor of things to come. Warne said he wouldn't just copy what he did at Rotherham, but this style of football reeks of low percentage chuck it in the box and see what happens nonsense i.e., precisely what he did at Rotherham.
I don't think I've seen an opening day performance this bad since Paul Jewell's 08-09 opener against Doncaster. Warne needs to improve and fast if he wants to stay in this job.

Not a performance completely devoid of quality, after all we had the most goal attempts in the league on the day, but unfortunately one that typifies a Paul Warne Derby County. Naive unforced errors at times where we seem intent on killing ourselves. We can’t seem to stop giving teams easy opportunities - you saw it against Sheff Utd and again today. It’s crazy to me that some still associate Warne with pragmatism. What I’ve seen of his Derby side, he’s the furthest thing from a pragmatic manager I have ever seen.
Unfortunately, it also compounds our need for a striker. It’s a game of margins and it’s shown that we are a team lacking, critically, in the area of most value to a successful side. If Warne doesn’t sort it, I doubt he will lose his job, but will most certainly lose the fans.
I’m trying not to overreact, but if Warne doesn’t change the narrative then years down the line this experience will always be viewed in this light: A manager who liked to turn football games into basketball games. As good as this team can be, unfortunately anything can happen on the day as our game management is non-existent.

Just a great last session to end an unbelievable series. Such a fitting way to finish, looking gone at 135-0 and then again at 264-3, to claw it back with 7 wickets for 70 runs just topped it off.
Have just seen the Sky Sports News montage of the series and it's crazy how many controversies have been packed into the 5 games. So many talking points. It's been a tad better than Sibley and Burns blocking the life out of us all that's for sure. From the Crawley 4 first ball of the series to Mark Wood's arrival, sending Khawaja's off stump flying at 95 mph, to end it with Broad doing that - it really is fairly tale stuff.
It just leaves you wanting more doesn't it? No more test cricket until India next year now and the shitty Hundred up next. Thankfully we have The Rams to cheer us up next week but there will still be a huge sporting void left by this incredible last 6 weeks.

Passing around the back for possession sake is not what I am talkng about. I enjoy passing football, and you don't need to be the greatest footballers in the world to play decent passing football through the final two thirds of the pitch.
If you find Man City boring as hell, and find Warneball (3 or 4 passes, lose it, chase hard to get it back) entertaining, we really have nothing in common when it comes to appreciating good football.

I can't agree with that statement. But I will agree that Warne is probably our best bet currently, even if I'm not convinced. Still that's what the summer transfer window is for isn't it, or so many are saying. We will see. I hope he gets it right because I hate League 1 football.

Warne’s record against top half sides.
    P15 W2 D6 L7
Warne came in at a time when we played crap teams.
Rosenior’s nine games in charge saw us face 7 top half sides in Plymouth, Posh, Barnsley, Wycombe, Charlton, Shrewsbury and Lincoln.
    Warne’s record against bottom half sides is P22 W15 D5 L2
We played a disproportionate amount of bottom half teams under Warne.
He has proven to be a flat track bully who has struggled the moment we have faced anyone decent.
2 wins in 15 is pathetic.
