Roy McFarland scored the winner to shut up the Geordies around us yelling about Jimmy Smith. The significance of the game was that, for the first time in my lifetime, Derby County went top of Division 1 that day. The following week, we thrashed Tottenham 5-0 at Derby in front of the biggest crowd ever at the Baseball Ground. Everyone of a certain age remembers that game, but the Newcastle one sticks in my mind just as much. Fantastic day out on the Ramaway. Everybody wearing black and white though and we got in the wrong end. Only found out when Derby scored 😱 Eddie, LeedsCityRam and ariotofmyown 1

Butterfield brace - really thought we were going up that night... Friday night, day before my 20th birthday A pub had gotten a buffet ready for our coach but a lorry had shed its load on the M1 so we never made it and they slammed the phone when we let them know 😂 Mad the rubbish you remember because of football Edited April 30 by cannable Kathcairns, CocuBarmyArmy and DarkFruitsRam7

I remember watching the climax on tv after getting back from Shrewsbury. Not entirely sure how but I definitely remember doing that. I think your memory is confusing different events youth. You're right about those events being on the same day, but that was September 1981 and Archie's last game was May 1984 at Shrewsbury. He wasn't at Derby in 1981. The play off at Millwall as mentioned, memorable for all the wrong reasons. Was the first and only time I've ever felt scared at a football match. Vowed never to go to Millwall again. Remember coming out of the ground after being held for ages while chaos reigned outside - it was eerily silent. Police escort for safety in group to station expecting their fans to come roaring around a corner at any second! Kathcairns

Caerphilly Ram
24th September 1997, Sheffield Wednesday 2 - 5 Derby County. A few days after my birthday, I finished school for the day and when my dad got home from work he asked out of the blue (and out of character to be so impulsive) if I wanted to go watch Derby that night, I of course said yes. So we picked up a mate of mine along the way and drove to Sheffield, watched some Italian magic from both sides with Di Canio and Carbone trying their hardest (and failing) to upstage Eranio and Baiano (scored 2). Wanchope (who I loved) and Burton combined for a goal a piece….can’t remember who got the other but it was a pretty special night under the Hillsborough lights wearing that sexy orange and blue Puma number 😮💨 Kathcairns, FlyBritishMidland, IslandExile and 5 others 5

The next game versus Chelsea was a banger too. I know we lost 3-2, but we did score 4 of the 5 goals on the night and we gave them a right good game. Fikayo's effort was probably also the best taken own goal I've ever seen 🤣 Kathcairns

I don't recall the score, it being Archie's last game, or any flying seats. I was settling down with a young family by '84, and not a regular match-goer, so that NatWest day was almost certainly '81. 🤷♂️ Crewton and Kathcairns 1
