I given to those in doorways in Derby City centre...but always think...is it for food and a hot drink, Or smokes, Drugs or alcohol...it's a no win situation

It may be an urban myth, but there was supposedly a bloke used to sit near the underpass to the Main Centre before it was demolished - would sit there all day with his little cup collecting money - and at the end of the day, he'd go through the underpass to the car park and get in his Merc.....

That Urban myth has travelled quite a bit 👍

A lad I knew(unfortunately)from Sinfin would travel in a mini bus to towns through out England 10/12 of them collecting cash, This was done under the guise of working for a 4 year old lad in Sinfin who had cancer and wanted to swim with Dolphins in Florida, A meeting was set up with the parents and the go ahead was given.

They collected 1000s of £s, The Mother asked where is this money, She was told not enough was collected after expenses were taken, She went to the police, Police investigated and those responsible were found guilty(not sure what the crime was called)the lad I knew was sentenced to 4 years, He came out and was ostracised and eventually left Sinfin or died 🤷‍♀️

My younger brother just could not escape drugs ( died a few years ago because of it aged 50) , I loved him to bits and tried everything I could over the years to get him clean , he would often try to get me to give him money on this excuse or another , sometimes I would give others I would say I couldn’t afford it , I always sent him money at Christmas though I knew how it would be used and rightly or wrongly I had to look at it that even spent wrongly it was a few days where he didn’t have to struggle to find the money he needed for drugs and maybe brought him a few day’s happiness in what was honestly a horrible hamster wheel existence,

life’s a bit of a cxnt sometimes 🤷🏻‍♂️

That's proper love, right there.

Sorry for your loss.

What about bankers/people in finance who were on huge day rates for years on end? The rules were being abused, the rules had to change. Not saying it works well now but ir35 rules had to change.

They're all salaried staff with ludicrous bonuses.

I agree that the ability of individuals to set up corporate structures to o reduce their tax burden relative to someone who is just an employee needed change.

Interesting conversation here with Linekar about his life and the recent controversy.

Doesn't come across quite like the horrible human some people seem to think. And there might be the slimmest possibility that this controversy was manufactured by a usual media suspect. But of course, no one here could ever be played by the media. We are all well too savvy for that.

Are you expecting him to go on radio and make himself sound bad?

Id point you in the direction of a certain Mr Saville as a shining example that people are not always as they come across.

All that being said, I don't think Lineker is a bad person, just the stereotypical champagne socialist.

Well I always though Savile was a weirdo! I would have thought you would too.

Linekar comes across as pretty thoughtful and normal. Definitely doesn't make any claims that make him out to be the reviled champagne socialist. He views seem pretty centrist and uncontroversial, even on refugees.

I'd really recommend listening to Rest is Politics if you haven't. It's a great antidote to so much of the dire media knocking around now. I started with an interview with William Hague, who himself joked how he used to be considered somewhat right wing and the current Tories have just moved miles past him.

There were a couple of episodes recently in both the buildup to the Iraq War and it's legacy. Rory Stewart properly grills Alistair Campbell on what happened and some of Campbell's insight into the Bush Administration were fascinating, especially how he thought Bush was actually ok and was trying to prevent the Hawks from going straight into war.

@GboroRam you might be interested in these Iraq episodes too.

Brian Clough was a self-described Socialist who often talked of times he'd shared his Champagne with people. He wasn't ashamed to have made some money and spent it on things that were viewed as extravagant. There are people at both extremes of the political spectrum who would have condemned his attitude for different reasons, but I think I know what he would have said to them.

Sadly it’s that degree of honesty that’s lacking these days , as I’ve said before i hold mainly socialist views but recognise there has to be a level of meritocracy that rewards those who choose to work harder , smarter and longer ,, god knows how you achieve that balance in society but it’s a right mess now in the west and even in so called socialist countries , perhaps we are just a crappy species

Lets start with the Politicians then work down to the CEOs, Utility companies, The food industry, The fuel industry, The water industry, Our Councils/Councillors, Reality shows where contestants will sell their Grandma for 15mins of fame and fortune, Influencers, Failed Celebrities who'll risk their last hope for fame to go on Big Brother.

We live in a world where £-$-€ is king, Everyone wants that, But not everyone can get that, Some seek illegal ways to get it, Others use a position to get it, Others work damn hard for it.

There's winners and losers in every walk of life, Look after yourself and family members as best you can and maybe just maybe...things will work out fine 👍

Honesty is the key Archie.

Some celebrity socialists don't really want socialism, that was proved by how they all turned against Corbyn. The thought of important things like Health, Transport, Energy, Water etc run for the good of the people rather than pure profit was a tad too far for them.

They are in safe hands with Starmer, he'll make sure nothing changes!

As an aside, I read an article about our Prime Ministers effective tax rate is 22% on his earnings.

Mine is closer to 25%.

Maybe if all multi-millionaires and billionaires paid 25% like me, the country could afford to provide better public services and pump less s*** into our rivers and seas.

Yep totally agree, starmer would sell his granny to be pm , perhaps it’s the first past the post system , the only way to get into power is to infiltrate one of the two main parties whether they stand for what you believe in or not and it’s clear over the last 30 years that that is the tactic , we certainly do not have a labour part that is fighting for the working classes anymore , in fact they are not even in touch with them , I think you can see the same happening to the Tory party now apart from the desperate gimmicks being pulled now they look like losing power 🤷🏻‍♂️, this coupled with the circus in the USA at the moment really makes me wonder if the west is seeing the death throws of any real democracy now

We are lucky though. Imagine if most the media was owned and ran by billionaires who desperately wanted to maintain the status quo. They would try and divert attention from what you talk of above by continually exagerating issues that have little bearing on most people's lives.

And thank god we have great politicians who can accurately describe complex issues to the electorate, then present wise solutions that both encompass humanity, plus a way of solving the root of the problem.

Cloughie was a socialist who drank a lot of champagne. Not the same as the current "champagne socialists", the Islington set, the human rights lawyers, the virtue signallers, the Gary Nevilles and the Gary Linekers of this world.
