Result was brilliant, but think we'd have been lamenting the performance otherwise, regardless of missed chances. Far too long, not enough thought behind our play, they got behind our midfield to run at the defence far too often... even with a bad pitch, it wasn't pretty. Dobbin the game changer, even though he definitely should have scored 1 or 2 himself.

Wildsmith 7 (not at fault for the goal really and solid as always in all other departments)

Smith 7 (has added more aggression to his game in recent weeks and was impressive again)

Davies 7 (did well, albeit the whole team was sloppy on the goal)

Forsyth 7 (defended well on the whole)

Roberts 7 (another decent performance, worked hard)

Springett 6.5 (fantastic determination to keep the ball in leading up to the winner)

Hourihane 6.5 (not as effective as in recent weeks but tidy enough)

Dobbin 8.5 (would we have scored without his involvement? What an impact - he changed the match so he has to be MotM)

Bird 6.5 (worked hard as always)

Mendez-Laing 8 (until injury time, not one of his more effective games, but then... what a moment and such a great finish)

Knight 8 (incredible competitor and intelligent footballer)

Barkhuizen 6.5 (tried hard, didn't quite come off. His left-sided crossing still frustrates me!)

Collins 6.5 (worked tirelessly after coming on)

McGoldrick 7 (not one of his better performances and more than a bit fortunate with the goal, but not complaining)

Rooney 6 (very little time; heart in mouth when it looked (to me anyway) that he'd clipped one of their players in the box right near the end)

1Wildsmith 7.5 Made several reliable saves and always looked composed. Not at fault for the goal although unlucky to parry into the path for their chap to slot home. Got an extra ½ for sprinting 80 yards in 4.3 seconds to join the celebratory scrum.

12Smith 7.5 Faultless defending and a regular provider of service down the right to M-L and Knight.

33Davies 6.0 Retreated from their chap who advanced to score what became the goal when he should have faced him up; otherwise moments of pure class including a steam train of a block/tackle on their front man.

3Forsyth 8.0 That pass through the eye of a needle to Dobbin that produced the 1v1 was George Thorn-esque. Also had a good right-foot shot saved and looked every bit the consummate professional footballer.

15Roberts 6.5 Vale got lots of joy down their right hand side relating to our formation but Roberts kept chugging away.

22 Springett 7.5 The guy is a greyhound who devours yardage in split seconds; sometimes the most seemingly innocuous thing you do on a football pitch creates the "butterfly effect" - Springett prevents the ball from going out with a slide and hook of grace, and 5 seconds later 4,000 Rams in pandemonium. Not for the want of keeping the ball in was this game lost.

4Hourihane 7 Great skill and deft touch early doors to set McDick up; visibly waned on a heavy,energy-draining pitch.

18 Dobbin 9 MoTM A game of 2 halves Brian - came on and from one perspective should/could have had 4 goals; poked 2 wide, hit the bar and thwarted by their keeper on the other; from the other perspective 2 match-winning assists by streaking past groups of defenders and put across 2 inch-precise low crosses for the goals. Phenomenal balance at speed and superb application and head-uppery when others would have been crest-fallen.

8Bird  8 The shiny, stainless steel cog at the heart of the machine turning all the other cogs and making the machine run to time.

11Mendez-Laing 8 That finish. The speed of movement. The blur of brilliance.

38Knight 8 The Irish thoroughbred with no off switch; Got through the work of 2 players on a life-sapping puddin' of a pitch.

7Barkhuizen 7 Great early craft creating opportunity early doors.

Collins 7.5 Late-ish sub and lots of pulling their defenders out of shape and physical box-presence to re-kindle the team's final push.

10McGoldrick Oh-So sweet feet stroking home & a little grin and word for the grounded centre-half was a nice little back-story to behold.

Rooney 6 2 minutes to muddy his boots.

Superb night; cup-tie style; a never-forgettable explosion of joy with all the ingredients that make football so very special and 4,000 fellow Rams united in voluminous rapture.

Wildsmith - 7.0 - Solid as always. Two good saves but had no chance with the rebound effort for their goal

Smith - 6.5 - Not at his best

Davies - 7.5 - Some crucial blocks and tackles - looking better with games under his belt - life in the old dog yet

Forsyth - 7.0 - Another solid outing from our very own bionic man, love him!

Roberts - 6.0 - Not his best game - like Smith, got pulled out of position far too often

Springett - 7.0 - Bundle of energy - doubtless more to come, but I really like what Ive seen thus far

Hourihane - 6.0 - Went missing - poor delivery from set pieces

Dobbin - 8.5 MOTM - Should have scored, but we were going nowhere fast until his interventions - turned the game upside down with his xero fear approach - the most rapid player I've ever seen in a Rams shirt

Bird - 6.0 - Completely anonymous and allowed himself to get bullied - hugely talented but needs to toughen up - he's so close to excellence now, but frustrates in games like last night's

Mendez-Laing - 7.5 - Love him - not at his best but his average is pretty darn good - cracking finish for his goal

Knight - 7.0 - Bird's 'absence' made his life hard, but another manful, selfless and hard-working effort - Mr Consistency - get that contract extension sorted please!

Barkhuizen - 6.0 - Leggy, frustrated, poor delivery - he's been brilliant of late, but this was not a great effort

Collins - 7.0 - Not delivering the goal output I expected, but gave Vale a taste of their own medicine - nightmare opponent for CBs and I can't fault his work ethic and passion

McGoldrick - 7.0 - Not at his wand-waving best, but still better than most - showed his class and leadership qualities when Dobbin missed his chance, some proper dad-skills there

Rooney - 6.5 - Don't remember him coming on so gets a generic 6.5 from me

The Gaffer - 7.0 - not sure we set up right for this game, but he changed it up when we went behind and early enough for the subs to make their mark - the switch to 4-4-2 was a smart, if obvious play

Port Vale - 3.5 for their football, but 8.5 for their work rate and commitment - proper s********* us until the Dobster tore them apart

The Ref - 6.5 - Not good, not bad

1st half looked to me that we didn't adapt to the width of the pitch, didn't make use of it ourselves and made the press difficult,  although when it did work, Barks was close at back post, hard to see if he should have scored from the opposite end and not seen highlights yet.

Pleased Dobbin put his poor effort behind him and create the 2 goals, needs to focus on staying calm when he's got time to think in front of goal, but mom as game changer.

Generally a poor performance by current standards,  but got the job done and no-one played particularly bad. We miss Sibley carrying the ball, last 2 games has shown what he brings to the team as Roberts just doesn't offer the same outlet.
