Players that were either decent before or after they came to Derby

Nothing worse than the club announcing a great signing only to see them flop in a white shirt. Even worse when they leave and become world beaters. There have been a few:

Derek Hales

Danny Graham

Lee Bradbury

Francois Grenet

Butterfield?

Stern John

Bragstad

John Harkes?

Danny Mills

that thug from Wimbledon whose name escapes me

Blackman? Debatable if he was any good although he did have a short purple patch at Reading

suspect there are many more although only really Graham went on to do anything

Both Albentosa and Bueno had decent spells in Spain after leaving.

But since the Mel Morris era, how many players have we signed who went on to do better elsewhere?

Vydra. Ince at a push for a year with Huddersfield?

That just goes to show how dire our recruitment has been. We’ve probably signed 50+ players under Mel Morris’s tenure and made a profit on only a few while just one has established himself as a squad player for a now relegated Burnley.

All the while we just got relegated to League One despite Mel Morris taking over a squad which finished 3rd.

Oh and he spent about £100m in fees and wages on those 50+ signings.

Absolutely incredible.

You lose some credibility with the comment about being relegated...... that wasn't due to player quality but 21 point deduction after a 2yr restriction on recruitment!

Agree with the rest though

Not exactly world beaters, but off the top of my head Lingard, Bamford and Michael Keane went on to achieve a lot more than you'd have thought to see them with us

Feels like cheating to pick player who'd been brilliant but were old when they reached us, ala Rooney, arguably Bent etc

I always thought Lee Carsley was a donkey, had a great career at Everton

You were one of the many who underrated Carsley then, I think that over the last few years we could have done with a 'Lee Carsley' or a 'Darryl Powell'. Two key players who did the grafting, allowing flair players more time to do their stuff.

Benny Feilhaber had a decent career after he left.

Weimann?

Most players have a good spell in their career and will will also go to clubs where it doesn’t really work out. Under Mel’s reign, the problem has been that we predominantly play 4-2-3-1 or 4-1-4-1 but we’d sign ‘non descript’ attacker and then try and play them out of position. Or a RB like Cyrus Christie who can attack but can’t defend and they are your only defensive player on a wing. So it’s not that they are bad footballers per se, but weren’t suited to what was needed and it buggered up their careers being at Derby.

In terms of players looking good before joining Derby, Claude Davis is the one who comes to mind. Remember watching him for Preston when they knocked us out the 2004/05 playoffs. Big lad, physically imposing, mobile & good in the air...particularly good when we battered them in second leg at PP. He got himself a move to then Premier League Sheff Utd a season later.

Was genuinely delighted when we bought him, thinking he'd be an upgrade on Darren Moore & act as the stopper alongside Leacock. Suffice to say he was an absolute disaster but his confidence looked totally shot & can't imagine Jewell's 'man management' made it any better.

After Derby, he reunited with Warnock to keep Palace up so demonstrating he wasnt as useless as we all thought.

I think you misunderstood. Our relegation was down to recruitment. All of our current problems is down to dire recruitment. We were handed points deductions because we couldn’t deal with the financial implications of our dire recruitment.

Lingard actually made our good team much worse imho

Barry Powell

Don Masson

Both crap in a Rams shirt

I remeber going to a testimonal as a kid in the late 70's and remember the players coming out to the pitch one by one and Don Masson getting booed instead of cheered.
