All three keepers have weaknesses and if Marshall was the best choice Rooney would pick him. For various reasons I don’t think he is best and makes as many mistakes as the other two.

Roos should be back I think.

We don't often agree, but I think we finally do on something.

The apparent feigned injury would certainly have annoyed Rooney but, if it is true that Marshall refused to go along with the wage deferral last year and was then "ill" or "injured" so didn't play I am happy that Rooney is taking a principled stand. Don't understand why Marshall didn't leave in the window just gone because his chances of playing for Scotland are zero if he is not getting game time somewhere.

He also made more mistakes than I would have expected of a seasoned international so we are left with Roos or Allsop, neither are great but neither are mugs. Would be nice to have an England international (WBA) but they have parachute cash and obviously we don't

decent? It seems to me every single game the opposition goalkeeper is better than ours. I can't remember many times recently that an opposition goalkeeper has made a mistake leading to a goal.

This is what I have thought for a while. I’m aware of the tendency to ignore mistakes by the oppo’ keeper and yet to focus on any mistakes by our own. But still, I think our keepers are underwhelming and accident prone. Allstop less that the other two.

Really don't remember a time when the club had such a dismal choice of goalkeepers (but there probably has been ?  )

Add John Middleton to that.

John Middleton competing with Dave McKellar for the shirt. ?

Compared to those two, we're now spoilt for choice.

I'd still argue Roos is a better than average Championship goalie and should play week in, week out.

Until HIS! next mistake, I'm just be as comfortable with Roos as Allsop in goal, Now here's the rub, Allsop knows he's made an error, If WR drops him for that then i'm sure his confidence will take a little knock, Then the pressure will be on Roos knowing if he makes a mistake will he be dropped, I'm sticking with Allsop for the time being...that is until he makes...well you know ?

Is it a good thing for a keeper’s frame of mind if he thinks he’ll be dropped if he drops a bollick. I’d have thought it’s a bit like being a test opening batsman - most play better if they’re  told, ok you’ve got this whole series and the next to prove yourself.

I'm all for giving Allsop another chance.

I was rather perturbed though by his actions when Luton hit the bar late on. He seemed to have no idea where that ball was going until it hit the bar.

I hope he's not another one who can't judge the flight of a cross.

Was that a deliberate pun or autocorrect taking over ?

That's worked out well this last few years, Opening you need to be scoring in the 40s/50s if your good enough, Then carry on, No good getting out early or in the 20s/30s, It's a tough job being an opening batter, Get the shine off the ball and feel where the ball is when pitched.

Opening Bat=Goalkeeper...a specialised position.

PS... this aint the cricket thread ?

Agreed, His Granpappy was captured and taken prisoner at Ypres when caught in "no mans land"

I hate the use of batter now - batter = Yorkshire pudding mix

PS this isnt a cricket post either (or cookery)
