I wouldn’t concern yourself too much what Ashley says. He has supposedly been close to selling Newcastle 8 times. I wouldn’t suggest you do click on the link below, which provides info on 6 others in addition to his two recent efforts (to Sheikh Khaled and a separate Saudi consortium).

https://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/sold-october-2009-six-times-15503410

One might come to the conclusion that Ashley is a time waster with no intention of selling his club.

I'm no fan of Mike Ashley, far from it. I'm only interested in the background and the intentions of anyone likely to become the new owner of DCFC. Not that they will be answerable to supporters.

Yes obviously, but as I said the point is that you don't get rich throwing money away unnecessarily. Ashley is also apparently worth billions - why he is haggling over such a tiny amount of wealth. You can't read anything into it - just because you are rich doesn't mean you just piddle money down the toilet.

A very interesting point that you make. History is littered with examples of exactly that. Buying a football club is a primary example of how to 'piddle' your money away. A bit like going to the casino. Advisable only for those who can afford to lose a bit....

Just to prove your point the Wrexham “takeover”.......taken from the BBC sports website.

The takeover could lead to £2m being invested in the club and Reynolds and fellow actor McElhenney had told trust members they wanted to turn Wrexham into a "global force".

£2 million invested, global force....................................oh dear, how sad!

I guess what you could argue is that £2m is a massive amount in the National League.

Once Wrexham gets back into the football league structure it is such a big club support-wise that it will surely gain momentum.

I still think it's two rich Hollywood stars having a laugh.

I hope they make it work though because we all need a fairy story.

If they're looking at it to make any money they're probably going to get fed up of it pretty quick.

If they've looked at L1 and L2 finances and decided between they're happy to lose "£x" a year on the fun of running the club, then OK. Being Mac and that Deadpool guy will give them a bump in profile but they'll still be a non-league club (until they go up).

They’re taking over Wrexham so that they can do an Amazon/Netflix style documentary and actually make a profit from running them.

Wrexham’s merchandise sales and sponsorship etc will all increase as a result them being at the club too with all the exposure they’ll bring so it’s quite smart really.

Think they’re fan owned at the moment to so there’s little if any cost involved in actually purchasing the club. Bet captain Bootlegger will be buzzing!

I have been told again it will be a exciting appointment.

And exciting times ahead for the Rams on and off the pitch we just have to be patient.

Oh for goodness sake. No-one in their right mind is going to say 'it's a really crap appointment, live with it'!

How many pubs do you see with signs outside saying 'Crap pub food'?!

Only problem is that one man's 'exciting' is another man's 'meh....' - the media are hugely excitied that Rooney could get it - the fans in general simply don't want him. All a matter of perspective...

I was surprised at this line (my emphasis) in the DET piece this morning. https://www.derbytelegraph.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/Derby-county-takeover-manager-rooney-4707609

"The new owners will appoint the next manager, and current chairman Mel Morris and CEO Stephen Pearce are likely to be involved in the process as both are expected to remain at the club once the takeover has gone through."

Before we've heard that Mel might have some sort of consultancy role, but this sounds a little different. Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but it chimes with the club statement talking about "investors" rather than "new owners".

Great news if true. ?

Nothing has changed. Mel will stay on as a consultant and Stephen as the CEO - it was confirmed last week. How long that continues is anyone's guess - Mel might still keep a portion of the club (10-20%) who knows.

I'd hope so as it keeps someone around with unequivocally the best intentions. It's ideal in my opinion - Mel would obviously have to give up a lot of his time for much less investment, but I guess that means less losses for now and the hope of a pay day at a later time.

I think the article itself answers your questions. Ownership is changing hands - that has always been Mel’s wish.

The Sheikh and his team have no experience of running a football club. MM and SP will likely take on advisory roles, at least for the interim.

It is also possible that BZG become the new owners, but Mel and Stephen continue their roles as chairman/CEO respectively. I imagine Mel in particular wants to see the project through, but doesn’t want / can’t afford to bankroll it anymore.
