I am not so sure.. Do they really want to go toe to toe with the US? Can they? Certainly not on any scale. There will be a lot of noise for sure but.....

They will have to do something but I don't I would expect that to be pretty small.. They will be quite happy internally to have got everyone back on the same page hating the west. They were becoming pretty fractured with the sanctions and the country was becoming split.

Things will get interesting if they shutdown the Strait of Hormuz - as 20% of the world's oil currently goes via that route

If that happens ,I'm just glad I don't own a car!

That's a good point.  Internally this plays into the regime's hands and solidifies support for the hardliners.

I'm sure the Iranians are aware they can't go toe to toe with the US in any military conflict.  But I wouldn't like to be in the US embassy anywhere in the Middle East right now. Iran has significant reach all over the region.

Trump tweeting about hitting sites in Iran that are culturally significant was astonishing. Not least because that would be an obvious war crime but also the Iranians can legitimately interpret that as a threat against sites of religious significance.  Not a masterstroke in terms of de-escalating a crisis.

Yeah, not normally surprised by Trumps tweets but targeting cultural targets was a new low.

We will never know the inside story but all the Trump rhetoric previously has been about pulling out of the region, now he is going back in. Hopefully all this is a my dick is bigger than your dick poo show.

I know this won't go down well on this board but I don't believe his first instinct is for war. In fact Obama sanctioned more action in the region than Trump. He would not have done this on a whim. They know something. I heard a rumour that there was action planned by Iran against a US Embassy last weekend, that's why he gave the go ahead. That was from as source in the Mid East not the Pentagon.

That's sounds a bit "I'm alright, Jack" to me.

That's an unpleasant image.

I agree that Trump is not a warmonger in the sense he doesn't see the direct financial reward in it, so he doesn't really see a point. And Obama did sanction a lot of very dangerous (and in my view counter-productive) drones strikes on Pakistan.  A country with an growing internal Islamic fundamentalist problem and a country that already has nuclear weapons.  A dangerous mix, and I would have thought it unwise to do anything that could serve as a recruitment tool for the extremists. But Obama was of a different mindset.

Without being idealogically in favour of further military conflict, Trump could, given his volatile and uncomprehending nature, cause a war nevertheless.  Let's hope the Iranian reaction is small enough that the US can brush it off without launching reprisals.

The statement that he has 52 sites lined up - one for each of the 52 hostages from 1979/80 is extremely disturbing. Smacks of the Compiegne Wagon railway carriage thing the Germans pulled on the French in 1940.

Someone with a deeper understanding of psychology would be able to provide deeper insight though.

Yep Hitler and Trump were/are both nutters .Happy to help.

Agree, no point in discussing Trump in any sort of rational terms. The guy is clearly senile and/or mentally ill. They need to get him out of office before he does something even worse. Like Nukes a country because they made a silly cartoon of him.

It's early January but we already have a strong contender for most vulgar statement of the year.

This coming from a President of a country that invaded Iraq on false pretenses, bombed it into oblivion, killing vast numbers of civilians, destroyed it's infrastructure, used depleted uranium shells leaving radiation contamination and unleased ISIS on them.

"We've spent a lot of money in Iraq," Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One as he returned to Washington after spending the holidays at his Florida resort, Mar-a-Lago. "We have a very extraordinarily expensive air base that’s there. It cost billions of dollars to build. ... We’re not leaving unless they pay us back for it."

As to Iran's response to the killing of their top general, a request to the Syrian government to allow Iran directly or through proxies to attack US military bases in Syria hints at what is to come.

I’m pretty certain Trump hasn’t ever invaded Iraq

The US military is the most dangerous in the world. Iran gave them provocation, of which, they didn't need much.

Regardless of your opinion on Trump, he clearly has his persuasions and ideals. I personally don't think he would lose a wink of sleep putting the entirety of Iran in ruins, IF he had a reason. Give him an inch and he'll take the mile.

Which hundreds of British and Americans are you referring to?  i laughed because you quoted a pentagon lie.

General Soleimani was responsible for the deaths of hundreds of ISIS members in Iraq and Syria.  Without the assistance of his forces, Syria would likely have been overrun by pentagon supported terrorists.
