Is this the most depressing period you’ve experienced as a Derby fan?

Just watched the MOTD highlights of the 0-0 in the cup at the Green Army in 84. Me and dad behind the goal. Surprisingly can remember very little about the game other than their shot hitting both posts. That period has to be even worse than this. Going so close to going bust, other than Bobby a team of ageing players on one last pay day and not an awful lot of hope that things would change. Then came Arthur and the rest is history….

The clough years…..rebuild job, great signings, the last period of really shrewd recruitment at DCFC, great team spirit…. Completely undervalued in terms of the job he did….

interesting that the players from that era agree about this too….ward, Bryson, bucko, Russell etc

It was still largely a grind, a team that only became worth the ticket admission when McClaren arrived.

Take nothing away from Clough, he was shrewd in the transfer market as he had to be, we had owners that only went above a million for a player was it twice? Barker and Sammon?

There was no excitement apart from a cup run that saw us play Man United.

Just felt a bit like Groundhog Day

Disagree the season Mr Clough got sacked we started to play some great stuff the away victory at Yeovil, with the 26 passes before Mr Brysin scored, away to Millwall, when we hit them for 5, some of them players there at the time, believe that we was going somewhere under young Mr Clough and i agree, Clough built the side Steve Mac took to wembley, that team was alot better than we have now, and that's a fact.

Not sure what you’re actually disagreeing with, I mean I said most of this in my own words

I disagree when you said there was no excitement under Clough, the season he got sacked the football was much better, like the examples i gave about the away games at Yeovil and Millwall, he built slowly, but that season i still believe Mr Clough would have got us into the play offs, the best 5 managers we have had since i have been going from 1979, are, Mr Cox, Mr Smith, Mr Burley, Mr Clough and Mac mark 1.

Ahh.

Clough may have got us in the play offs had we gave him another 40 years to get there. I’m just glad he was sacked as we’ve been there several times since, great having excitement as a football fan

We have got there that season in my opinion, wish we had the stable club we had back then, but i suppose we have Mel to thank for that, we could be back in division 1 next season, and that will not be down to the manager.

You really think had McClaren not come in we would have made the play offs still?

Sorry but I can’t wrap my head around that theory at all.

That really necessary? Comes across as totally disrespectful to a manager who rebuilt the squad from the wreckage of 07/08 & laid the foundations of the playoff campaigns you mention.

Aside from 2014 (with a team Clough largely built), its been a constant stream of choas & decline masquerading as 'excitement'. If we'd have stuck to the slow build, rather than going 'Hollywood' with big name players, first time managers & publicity hungry owner & CEO, we would've been in a much better position today. Anyone who knew of Burton's journey under Clough knew where he was taking Derby.

even after Maxwell pulled the plug, even the 3 amigos.... There was still enjoyment going to matches

I remember Maxwell leaving a match early, and then hovering over the Baseball Ground in his helicopter to watch a free kick, or maybe it was a penalty. We missed - and he flew off. My memory tells me that it was against Man Utd.

I guess he was larger than life, and provided us with an opportunity to focus frustrations - except, because he ran the Daily Mirror, I am not sure that Derby people were supposed to hate such a sound socialist, as he was portrayed!

Interestingly ... in recent times, matches against Man U have been memorable.

The bottom line is that this cannot be the most depressing time to be a Derby fan!

We now have this forum! Earlier periods in Derby's history had to be endured without access to the Forum! That must have been worse!

............................................

Unless ...

Oh no! What am I thinking ...

When did the forum start ... ?

When did this depressing period begin ... ?

...........................................

No! It cannot be! The forum is a force for good. Long live the Forum!

It’s my opinion, I’ve already given him credit for rebuilding the team, but I won’t sit here and pretend we were going anywhere under him. That’s not being disrespectful, that’s being honest.

Check out Mac's results that season against the team's we'd played under Nigel.

One point more from the reverse fixtures.

We weren't a million miles away under Nigel.

No issue with believing he couldnt take them any further...I personally disagree but its not unreasonable to suggest otherwise. It was also a hard slog at times under him, I would accept that

Was more directed at the remark about being glad he got sacked & 40 years to get a playoff spot. I've certainly got more respect for Clough than the likes of Lampard & Rowett who got us into the playoffs but at a massive financial cost & with a much better base to start from.
