Lampard and gerrard were 2 of the main reasons we didn’t win anything during the golden generation…!

gareth will go down as the  best English manger ever after we cruise past Denmark and thrash Italy.

The fact they were such big players in the squad does mean they are well placed to discuss the issues of that group. It was only a 15 minute discussion on ITV but it was interesting.

I think that's going a bit far tbh. He'll have to win a world cup to beat Alf Ramsey in people's minds I imagine. If we win the euros he'll definitely eclipse Robson and everyone bar Ramsey though.

Already he has got Us to 3 semi finals on the trot at least… best ever.

But it’s a fact…

so is what I said. You can't argue that a manager is better than previous ones using a metric that includes a tournament that didn't even exist the previous managers were employed.

2 major semis puts him 2nd.

Sir Alf: 1st, SF QF, DNQ, DNQ

Robson: DNQ, QF, Groups, SF... Southgate's already eclipsed him.

Venables: SF

Ok then, he has won more knockout games than any other English manager in history…that one ok for you?

Won’t top Ramsey until he wins a World Cup. But there’s certainly an argument for him being our second greatest.

Quite depressing really!

If he wins a WC then it won't be in England, so that should be more worthy of praise than what alf did.

Home advantage was definitely a thing for Ramsey  and the somewhat uneven arrangements this tournament have been even more in southgates favour.

Winning away would just be a much greater feat given that it's really quite unusual, especially across continents.

It says alot about some of the managers that have been allowed to be in charge of our national team.

That and thinking the men in suits at the FA aren't the right people to carry out the selection process for any future England manager.

The rest of the list:

  1. Sir Alf - the only winner
  2. Southgate - the only other head coach to reach 2 semis
  3. Robson - one of only 4 to reach a SF. Ahead of 4th due to also reaching a QF
  4. Venables - the 4th head coach to reach a SF
  5. Sven - 3 QFs, nothing worse, nothing better
  6. Winterbottom - 2 QFs
  7. Hodgson - 1 QF
  8. Hoddle - progressed from groups
  9. Hodgson - progressed from groups (just)
  10. Greenwood - qualified 2 out of 2 times
  11. Keegan - qualified 1 out of 1 times
  12. Taylor - qualified 1 out of 2 times
  13. Mac - Failed once
  14. Revie - Failed twice

Nice to see revie sitting at the bottom of that list. FA could have had Clough, that one went well for them.
