Would have been nice to have Stokes, Broad and Woakes (from the start) but not sure it would have made too much difference to the series score. The England team is great when things are in their favour but when the pressure is on they get frazzled. Root is an excellent batsman but a mediocre captain and we should look at how many staff the team employs. The county system doesn't work and builds reputations on sand. Easy enough to get a few wickets on a helpful pitch against basically good club cricketers or runs against 80 mph trundlers at Taunton. We should have eight regional teams to improve standards, more akin to the Sheffield Shield. That's not a knee jerk reaction to a defeat but an assessment of the past few years. JoetheRam Posted September 6, 2021 Share Posted September 6, 2021 (edited) Feel like Root gets a raw deal for his captaincy. The team is average even with Stokes, Broad, Buttler, Archer available. Without them, I think we did well to take it to five days against the 2nd best side. I don't think he's Hussain or even Strauss level by any means, but he's been dealt a bad hand with regards the overall level of the team and we've done about as well as we could over his tenure with the 'talent' available.
