our Premier League season in 2007/08 was nowhere near as "disgraceful" as people make out. There was lots of bad luck in that season and we could have easily won more points. In terms of performance, the following games, from memory, were not embarrassing:-

Portsmouth (h), Man City (a), Fulham (h), Fulham (a), Liverpool (h), Chelsea (h), Newcastle (h), Newcastle (a), Sunderland (a), Sunderland (h), Bolton (h), Bolton (a)

I've always thought that as well, we could easily have finished with 3/4 more scrapped wins and not been the joke we became.

And with hindsight, Jewell was awful, but he had good credentials when he came in for promotion and staying up. Oh how badly that went.

Billy shouldn't have been sacked mid season.

Going back in the mysts of my mind it was a bit more complicated than that, with on the one hand Billy making his position untenable whilst on the other Adam Pearson operating his own agenda trying to bring in the Americans.

Whilst it's easy to overly scapegoat the poison dwarf it was all a bit murky when he was sacked at Derby but he subsequent behaviour has been a demonstration that he is.....not easy to work with?

No, but Jewell obviously wasn't easy to 'work with' either. An appalling appointment, unless he had another video with someone from the club in it!

Its not a coincidence four of the CB's we've signed in recent years, all whom arrived with a bit of "pedigree" Shackell, Albentosa, Pearce and Shotton have turned to **** playing for us. There's a common denominator the other side of them.

Shackell isn't a **** defender at all, people get more frustrated with his sideways passing. Shacks and Keogh were absolute rocks in that winning run under Clement.

Albentosa was a strange one and it's typically believed that a massive culture shock was the main reason he failed here, plus he was playing in an ever-changing, low-confidence side.

Pearce was initially outstanding when first played next to Keogh, his form just deteriorated towards the end of the season.

Shotton was poor when he played for Brum at our place in December, suggesting it was nothing to do with Keogh.

Shackell was fine off the ball under Clement.

The slow, head it and kick it centre-half Albentosa excelled in a backs to the wall side and looked bad in a high line in which he was tasked with having the ball at his feet.

Pearce won the Championship in a deep defence, excelled with us in a deep defence and then went to pot when we tried implementing a high line.

Shotton was signed for his pace as Bucko was repeatedly mauled by quick strikers. He kept Callum Wilson quiet from memory and was nowhere near as bad as people made out.

So yes, coincidence

Shackell was immense when he was playing week in, week out. Mac should never have changed that for Pearce, tho Pearce for a short spell was good himself. Shotton didn't appear to be a centre half when he was here imo, looked more comfortable at full back.

I thought Robbie Savage was OK

Robbie Savage was and still is and underrated footballer. People get caught up remembering his antics, but he played his role well in the rebuilding seasons under Clough. He took the pressure off the young team Clough was assembling, was a good influence around the dressing room and was actually a decent passer of the ball.
