I'm not 78 that's Turk Thrust ??I'm 66, I was always led to believe that the ground that Olive Eden was built on was owned by Olive Eden, Rupert Road is just off Wood Road an old playground of ours, Across the road was Lennox the DIY store where in the 60s I had to get a gallon of paraffin from the machine outside the shop...Esso Blue ?, A shilling(5p)a gallon, Dad would fill the heater and we'd all have headaches from the fumes...all because we'd ran out of coal ?

I’m 76! I also lived in Chaddesden but in the more salubrious area of Valley Road.

  2. We always met in the late60s/70s at the Vine in Whitaker street. (Now long gone)The landlord liked a drink or three and I can remember going there once when he had a badly bruised and bloodied face. He had fallen down the steps to the basement.

nice memories of old friends who I have totally lost touch with alas.

  4. Went to the Everton match today. Everton were really poor. Got to be relegated and I can’t see them doing well in the Championship either.  Lampard needs to go, but who would replace him?  Mind you, West Ham weren’t much better.

  5. I’m going to the West Ham v Everton match tomorrow. The Irons (when did they stop being called the Hammers?) have been really poor recently but I expect a 1-1 draw and Frank to be gone.

How has a 24 year old ended up with the name Barry?

Yes interesting how names become unfashionable and date people. My name’s Colin and in Junior school in the early 50s half the class were called Colin. (Though mine’’s got two “l’s”). And Darren only became popular with the character called Darren Stephens in the 60s TV sitcom Bewitched. Not much used now.   Barry which could be a shortening of Bartholomew, or from a Gaelic name, used to be popular but in 2021 only 1 in 15,377 baby boys were called Barry. OK lecture over, back on thread………

Ah ok us Ely for many years. My friends visiting from NW cut across fens first time they visited us in the dark - terrified with three swooping owls, roads and crazy driving!! A14 thereafter

I know round there well. My cousin lives in Bluntisham and I’ve experienced mad drivers.

  8. I’ve carried out training in Qatar in several occasions, mainly for officials of government departments and the petrol industry. But only once or twice have I met a Qatari who are very much in the minority. Nearly everyone I’ve trained have been Indians who seem to run the administrative elements. I have seen lots of Saudis who fill the hotel restaurants in the evenings, coming over to see their mistresses and drink lager, then go back over the border in their Range Rovers.  Qatar generally is like a mini Dubai. I much prefer Oman.
