Agree he’s been petulant but we’ve conceded from a nothing punt up from the half way line: 3 mistakes that I saw 1) Forsyth lost the header
    2) Joz completely lost his runner and allowed the cross
    3) Byrne had no clue where his man was at the backpost

And then we all woke up and realised it had been a terrible dream. Off we go to watch Steve McClaren's mighty Rams play their first Premier League game after beating Queens Park Rangers at Wembley. The year is 2014

Some pretty harsh opinions being expressed about a couple of players I think. Criticism of Bird in particular, who I thought was tidy and assured, if not spectacular.
I managed to get ‘my’ seat and unfortunately so did the blokes who sit around me who, while extolling the virtues of a crowd being at the ground to ‘support the lads’ took a whole 11 minutes to fall into their usual ‘moaning old gits ’ mode and proceeded to slag off every Derby player on the pitch for the next 80 mins. They love a scapegoat and Jozwiak seems to be the man of the moment. To be fair, they’ve waited a long time to vent their spleens to anybody who is forced to listen, so I’m sure it was a lot of fun for them. It is amazing though how quickly they rolled back the years and got into their ‘groove’.

I’m not suggesting it was a performance without criticism, but considering the build up, it wasn’t terrible. We obviously need to work on defending set pieces (something I’ve been saying for 40 years) and give fewer free kicks away (very naive at times). Cutting down the number of chances we allow from these areas should be of paramount importance. But overall defending from open play was OK.
We’re obviously not going to score a bag full of goals, so a solid back 4 is imperative.

Best thing about yesterday was that given all the talk of protests and abusing Mel, the atmosphere was actually quite chilled and positive (apart from the chuckle brothers who sit near me). Might not have been that way if we’d gone 1-0 down or lost, but it was nice all the same.

Do we set up to score goals or to not concede goals? The Euros saw Gareth Southgate pick 8 or 9 defensive players every game and it worked for a while but couldn't get him over the line, with an incredible array of attacking talent on his bench. Rooney has far fewer options but a very similar mindset.
Asked in today's Radio Derby interview why Louie Sibley doesn't start Rooney effectively said he doesn't trust him defensively. Sibbo is to Rooney what Jack Grealish is to Southgate. Rooney said he didn't play Sibbo specifically because his number one priority was not to fall behind in the match.
Here's the interview https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/p09pv3hb with the best version of the interview at 46:30.
Derby's problem is not scoring goals. Louie Sibley is the biggest goal threat our team has. Aston Villa built their team around Grealish until selling him for £100m. If Derby are going to survive (and maybe thrive) this season we need to build our team around Sibbo, not give him a cameo in which to try to make the difference. How best to do this?
I have long argued that the 4-2-3-1 does not work for us and we should be playing 4-3-3 (set up as 4-1-2-3). With the players available at the moment we should have Shinnie shielding the defence and then we can have Morrison and Sibley as the two more forward midfielders, which gives a forward line of Kazim-Richards central and Jozwiak and Thomas wide. So much more threatening than what we have at the moment.
With a team desperate for goals, having your 5 most dangerous attacking players in the line-up seems a no brainer. Rooney needs to learn to trust Sibley, and I am certain that trust would be rewarded.

First of all I LOVED being back at Pride Park. I was so happy that we cheered the lads on and despite the problems engulfing the club that did not seep through. I honestly thought it could go toxic today but it was anything but. Yes, the attendance was very thin but at times especially during the first half it felt just like there were 30,000 in the ground tbh. Hopefully, despite what will be a very difficult season we keep up that level of support. I've just got back after going for a dinner with the gf post game so my thoughts may be a bit scattergun.

I don't think the stearman/davies combo worked, even against a reduced Huddersfield attack they looked shaky as soon as 1 vs 1 happened and they got in behind quite a few times. Changed my mind on Roos after today i think, made at least 2 very good saves that kept us level.  I love Davies and he should start but Stearman's positioning is way too off for someone with his lack of pace. Both of them together for the season is asking for us to concede an average of close to 2 a game.  This was almost as poor an attacking unit against us as I can remember but they still had 3-4 pretty solid chances and plenty of half chances.  I'd honestly try one of the younger lads like Cashin and take our chances by giving us some cover.

In midfield Shinnie looked good and Bird was more settled second half. I still don't like the combination and again they failed to really give us enough either defensively or going forward. It's not that they're individually bad but together they just don't work.

Going forward we need to start Sibley, only when he came on did we even look like stretching their backline. I know people are fans of watson but we need someone stretching and moving ahead to give space in the midfield and that is Sibley. The goals are a big concern as chance creation was very slim on the ground. I can't think of a chance beyond the set piece and lawrence intercepting a ball that we created all game.

Despite the very hard work and effort we barely scraped a draw against a reduced huddersfield team that didn't look good themselves. Defensively we looked fragile and didn't offer enough going forward. I'm  not pinning the blame on anyone as there were no obvious errors but to put it simply at this level atm we're not good enough to stay in the division.

Again, that does not necessarily mean that 56% of people in hospital with Covid-19 caught it there. Did they actually produce a negative test beforehand? I suspect that a proportion of that number were untested before entering hospital. If someone has serious breathing difficulties and requires hospitalisation, it is unlikely that waiting for a test to arrive through the post in order to confirm their diagnosis is going to take priority over their loved ones ringing the emergency services, and neither should it.
When I had swine flu and had my ride in the ambulance hooked up to the machine that goes 'Pinggg', I was untested beforehand (it was all laboratory-analysis anyway, so that's probably a moot point).

Really good first half that. Absolute control for probably 35 minutes of it & played some neat stuff - final ball saved Notts from being further behind.
Ebosele & Cashin the absolute standouts though. Festy's pace is a must for the league XI & Cashin has been excellent in every facet of CB play - good in the air, positionally tidy, good on the ball & even seems to be playing wrong side (left footed but playing on the right side). Fully deserves his goal. Also liked the look of Thompson - good set piece delivery, good weight of pass & generally very composed in midfield.
Watson & Jozwiak been quiet though - both need to start demanding the ball more in dangerous areas, playing closer to Kazim when the ball gets to him & being more mobile to find space in the final 3rd when it doesn't.

Fair play for saying that. Clough was by no means perfect, but over time he built a great squad of talented and committed players, all for pretty much nothing.
I think he would have eventually got us promoted, but not in the barn storming style that we nearly did under Mac.
His time in charge seems like ancient history, especially now when we are desperate for a manager like him to sort us out.

Sorry for such a downbeat title - it's the title of the video below.
It runs through the past decade and a bit. Well produced, and includes a few snippets about managers and players that I hadn't known.
It seemed worth sharing. And a topic that's on people's minds.
