Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (Watched on Amazon)

You've probably seen the controversy online and maybe formed your own opinion already, fwiw heres mine after watching the first 3 episodes.

Personally, I think its okay.  The scenery (CGI or otherwise) is excellent, as is the soundtrack at times.  The acting and dialogue, not so great.  The story isn't really compelling yet, but its watchable enough for me at least to carry on.  I'd give it about a 6/10.

If you're not interested in the controversies, thats all you need to know ?

I'm not coming at this as a Tolkien fan.  I've seen the Peter Jackson movies and tbh enjoyed them a lot, but I've never read the books nor invested myself in the lore beyond what I can vaguely remember from watching them.  A lot of criticism I've read centres around it being Amazons vision for Middle Earth and not Tolkiens.  I can imagine as a Tolkien fan you'd be pretty disappointed, as purely a.n.other fantasy epic its not reaching any new heights - its one I'll watch then probably forget.

The diverse cast also apparently triggered a lot of people, although tbh the reviews I've read barely mention this.  Maybe a convenient distraction from the reported $1bn investment into a pretty average show?  Dunno.  Whilst some members of the cast have been pretty outspoken about the diversity of the show in the promotional tours etc, nothing in the actual show stood out as forced or cringeworthy.  If it wasn't for hearing about the controversy beforehand, I wouldn't have thought twice about it.

The Galadriel character I guess is the other sticking point.  Again, not being a Tolkien fan her combat prowess didn't really bother me (She is known as more of an angelic priestess type figure in the later movies).  She is completely overpowered compared to everyone else however which tbh was a little distracting and her characters dialogue and motivations have been written by the office junior.

I still remember quotes from PJs LotR, this however is instantly forgettable.  Not the actor, or any of the other actors fault - if you're spending $1bn on something you hire the best writers and directors, this was however created by 2 showrunners with barely any Hollywood credits between them.  It would be okay for a run of the mill fantasy show but Tolkien as with my guilty nerdy pleasure, Star Wars, are held to different standards by their fans.

I agree. Could get wherever it's going (I don't know where that is) a lot quicker.

I will probably watch the rest of it because it's ok but if something prevented me from seeing it, I wouldn't be upset.

Dogsthorpe In Peterborough: most of Peterborough to be fair

Crosby and Birkenhead in Liverpool: the absolute pits

    Cotmanhay, my god it’s bad

Crosby's nice. Are you mixing it up with somewhere else?

Oh and Birkenhead isn't in Liverpool. It's across the water.

Are commentators free to use terms like batsman? Are they not told to say batters?

Do we have postmen, binmen, handy man , man with a van , white van man et etc.. where does it end?

I suspect that commentators, just like any employee of a news-type organisation have a style manual to adhere to - particular phrases which need to be used, avoided, certain spellings etc

You still have postmen and postwomen but the gender of the person is not relevant to the job they do. The terms like 'handyman' come from a distant age when the job was done almost entirely by men. It's archaic. But you can use it as you like. Just as you can exclaim by saying, 'Ecod' or insult someone by calling them a slubberdegullion.

Words and phrases fall out of use. It never ends.

Or maybe he just used a common phrase that virtually everyone knew what he was on about.

On a similar note, my contribution to this thread is people trying to tell me what to think and what I'm allowed to say (or not say).  I appreciate that their opinions and beliefs might be different to mine - but they are different, not better.

If I come out with a traditional phrase such as 'its a mans game' when clearly talking about not shirking tackles etc I will continue to do so.

As for 'dying on that hill', I cancelled my Sky and TV licence a year ago ?

Nobody's telling anyone what to think.

Perhaps Souness is on holiday, who knows.

It's just patently absurd for Souness to say what he did whilst sitting next to a woman with triple figure caps.

'Traditional' phrases fall out of use simply because the world has moved on. Old farts like me got used to 'batter' and 'third' in cricket pretty quickly. It's anachronistic to continue using them but one is free to do so.

I see Graeme Souness has not featured as a punter since his "it's a mans game comment"

This Sky subscriber will not be renewing his sport deal in December ?

You want to die on that hill?

    Souness is a dinosaur.

Either he meant it was a game for men only, in which case, he's not a good fit for modern broadcasters or he meant that you need to be resilient to play the game, in which case he seems to lack the descriptive vocabulary required by someone whose job it is to talk about football.

Her response should have been firstly, let's pray we never ever are in that position. To be in that position means diplomacy has utterly failed. Lines of communication are utterly broken and there are no other options.

And secondly that it's hard to comprehend the massive loss to human and civilian life never mind the aftermath.

But instead she's like I'll do what I have to.

    She's a feckin loon.

People took her up on her saying go to Ukraine. They got captured. I think two of them are dead?

She should shut up. Northern Ireland, Russia and France before she's even sat in the big chair.

Scotland too. Their First Minister should be ignored, apparently.

We stopped playing when Posh went down to 10 men.

There was a period in the first half as well where we really struggled to play out from the back and just lumped misplaced passes.

We don’t have it in us to lump it and play second balls. We don’t have CKR anymore.

Those also questioning Korey Smith. His vertical passes were brilliant when he came on. He did more in 20 minutes than Bird did in the entire game.

Jason Knight is too good for this league.

How far did he manage to kick it into the air?

It's all the way to Liverpool midweek to watch Derby against the Liverpool U21s, so I'd expect there will be plenty of tickets to go around. It's not a bad draw because it should give DC a decent payday which will help towards the running expenses of the club, and because of the likely Liverpool team (proximity to the World Cup) we will stand a decent chance of making the next round.

I'm surprised by some of the comments in the thread. People forget that now is the best time in all of human history to be alive. Everywhere was a dump in the 1970s. Liverpool, Derby, London. They're all way better now and this will likely be a great evening out for everyone who goes (result-dependent of course).

And everyone can come round for a cup of tea

Much inspired by the Liverpool chat going on in the cup thread, where do you think just isn’t that bad?

Quiet beauty spot (we won’t tell anyone), venues, out of the way pubs, areas of countryside, town and cities. Anything applies!

Ill start with Stoke, not all of it of it obviously and it’s a bugger to drive through, but my other half did some work connected to one of the pottery factories and we found a couple of decent pubs nearby away from the centre. Also coming in from Leek there’s some nice scenic areas with impressive Victorian housing. I fully get Stoke’s reputation and that there is another side to the city, but it’s always my example where I think there’s a bit more to it than to how it’s perceived

All I've ever done with Stoke is drive through it. So easy is it that I barely notice it.
