Remember when we played Franks favourite up top.

Oooo… another chance for me to express the hill I will die on!

The midfield diamond was the problem not Bennett starting up front. Plus, Waghorn was barely fit.

Regardless of system or personnel, I think we could have played Villa 10 times and we’d probably only have won once - likely on penalties.

They were largely superior all over. We gave them a scare last 15 minutes but it was too little, too late.

On the other hand, if West Brom had beaten Villa on penalties, in my mind we would have been favorites in the final as I thought they were poor on both occasions we beat them.

And I’m sure Villa were delighted we beat Leeds.

Feel free to stay on your own hill regarding a midfield diamond though won't you.  Anyone with eyes could see that Mings could have gone out on the piss  till 3 am, had a curry, then stayed up till midday arriving just in time to get his kit on before going on the pitch and Bennett would still have given him no problems.  On the day he was absolute b*******.  Think someone else must have mentioned Waghorn, try another hill.

We lost because of Kelle Roos. Horrendous gifted goal cost us. Villa were never a threat.

And neither were Derby until about 75 minutes in.

Before Kelle’s mistake, we were 1-0 down with Villa looking so comfortable. That goal gave them the cushion, but the game was already getting away from us.

Anyone one else think of the 2019 POF every time they see Villa and where they are? Where would be be now if we'd won that game? I wonder if they even think about it at all.

Nope. By far the better team and squad.

A half fit Jack Marriott wasn’t changing a damn thing. We didn’t leave the second coming of Pele on the bench, his career has showed everyone that.

He scored and had one cleared off the line in his 25-30 minutes on the pitch. Prior to that Mings was stood on the halfway line taking a s*** whilst reading the paper.  Villa were good on the day, but there job was made a lot easier with erratic defensive work caused by nothing up front and the ball constantly being recycled

I know Villa were better but it was a one-off game.  What if they lost the semi final on penalties? For them to be in the CL 5 seasons later, just makes you wonder. Where would we be now? Would Mel still be here? etc.

Mel would still be here as it would the chance for the narcissistic nature to come to fruition.   Villa are a bigger club than Derby with more financial clout and had 100 million from one player to reinvest, so I doubt we'd be in their position without a lot more investment.  I imagine they're quite surprised.

I'm pretty sure they scored a goal at Sheff Utd at the end of their first season that kept them up, that with goal line technology would have relegated them as it didn't go in.  Get the luck sometimes as well.

So? Villa were 2 up at that point, defending and getting nervy. You can't take that time and extrapolate it as a given that it would have been like that from minute 1.

You mean the marriott that scored one and was so close to getting another?

Or the marriott that came on and completely changed the play off v leeds with 2 goals?

The same Marriott who wasn't fit and did those in games off the bench in games where the script directed the way it was going, not trying to influence it from the start.

Jack Marriott was a 1 in 6 striker with us, and has roughly been the same since at lower levels. He was not Ronaldo. Apart from maybe in weight of the original.

Lampard was a terrible manager who couldn't do a thing without Mason Mount playing well. He vanished at Wembley. Villa had a much better team than us, despite Tomori etc.

Without naming their whole team they had Tyrone Mings who's been good in the Prem and got into England squads, McGinn who plays weekly as they've got into the Champions League, Hourihane in his prime, £100m Jack Grealish, Tammy Abraham who scored regularly for Roma... and that's without naming other quality like El Mohammady, Tuanzebe, El Ghazi or Kodjia. Just a vastly better squad.

that was sheff utd that scored that 'goal'

Villa finished 11th that season, almost 30 points clear of relegation

I don’t know if we’d be where they are, but they would be where we are. They were all or nothing at the end of their parachute payments and massively over spending. That’s why they had such a good squad. They would’ve been stripped for parts after that season and plummeted. They should build a statue of lampard.
