A small insight into the psychology of Paul Warne...

Here's a great tactical analysis of how Warne likes to set his team up. I'd like to highlight the willingness to adjust his formation when things aren't working, as well as this paragraph (which may ease some concerns amongst a few of you):

"Instead, Warne’s side are actually quite flexible, capable of playing out from the back, going direct, or even sitting deep and counterattacking."

Superb analysis - rather reduces the beautiful game down to its bones, arteries, muscles, systems etc - but gives great insight and explodes some myths already circulating on this forum's pages about "Warne wont have the players here to suit his system" (my emphasis), "route one incoming etc ".

Fascinating read, and shows how technical football can be rather than just a load of blokes (or women) running round a pitch after a bag of wind. And another example of why Liam is still very much learning and has more than once got his tactics wrong against more experienced managers.  Warne may have "only" managed Rotherham but he's done extremely well based on the budget and standard of players at his disposal.  If this analysis is anything to go by, he has more than a good understanding of tactics and is happy to switch as the game dictates.  Give him the likes of Knight, Collins, Davis, Cashin, Barkie, McGoldrick, NML etc and he could surprise any doubters.

If 3-5-2 is his favoured formation then, as we saw Saturday, we are well set up to play this way with the squad we've got.

GK: Wildsmith (Anang, Loach)

CBx3: Chester, Davies, Cashin (Rooney, Stearman, Forsyth)

WBx2: Mendez-Laing, Barkhuizen (Oduroh, Roberts)

CMx3: Knight, Bird, Hourihane (Smith, Thompson)

FWx2: McGoldrick, Collins (Sibley, Dobbin, Osula)

*Also players like Rooney (CB/DM), Knight (RWB, CM), Roberts (LCB, LWB, DM), NML(R/L/C) & Barkhuizen (R/L/C) call fill multiple roles within this shape.

And there hangs the reason why our performances have been so frustrating.  Look at that team - it should put the fear of God into any other team in this league.

I’ll wait and see. If he adapts to what he has  and has been given an unfair tag through simply managing to his situation at Rotherham then great, he could well be just what we need. You can’t ignore he’s really got Rotherham going well this season and this could’ve been the season they survive comfortably, still might. But we’re very different to Rotherham. Maybe we’ll see 3-5-2 or 3-4-1-2 based on that article.

Im not in favour of this move, the jury is out for me but I want him to succeed, we need him to succeed, I wasn’t anti-rowett like a lot on here , if we see attacking winning football not only here but back in the championship I’ll be happy and laud him appropriately.

I was happy until I read "although the Timothy Dalton phase was a bit cheesy".  The Living Daylights is the best Bond film.

Really??  Better than From Russia With Love, Goldfinger, You Only Live Twice, Goldeneye, Casino Royale??  Admittedly Dalton (who went to school with one of my Primary school teachers, whose maiden name was Bond!) is very good in the role, but both of his films are average...

Any way, back on point, the more I listen to the below, you more I'm warming to the guy -

And I thought football was a simple game at this level. Bigger sized players ( bruisers) win more often!

Agree - just listened thru' - some great thoughts and views.  As an excerpt:

"Just press, just xxxx press....press and match them all over the pitch. Can you get the ball out wide {so it's} one v one? Just be quick and positive, and quick when it's out there, don't slow the game down. Play forward, run xxxxx forward, you've got 2 outstanding strikers, get the ball in the fricking penalty box. Give the strikers something to play for...."

I'm sold!

Can't really ask for better players for that.

Give it NML and Barkhuizen and put it in the box. I have a feeling we might see Collins score a few more goals now too.

Spot on - exactly why that particular bit stood out for me - no disrespect to Rotherham but we have the players to do exactly that. NML, Barkhuizen, Knight - and more, whose natural thought is to attack, not play sideways or back.  Jury obviously out on Warne, but if he can instil this mentality, with the likes of Chester, Cashin, Davis at the back we may actually win an away game!
