Controversially..

Duncan Ferguson, Ole Gunner Solksjaer, Mark Hughes, Zidane, Klinsmann, Glenn Hoddle, Dean Saunders...

Can Zidane be classes as a bad manager?
Champions League - 3 times
La Liga - 2 times
Spanish Cup - 2 times
Club World Cup - 2 times
Super Cup - 1 time

Joint best winning streak in La Liga history
Longest unbeaten run in Spanish history
Longest scoring run
Only manager to win back to back Champions Leagues (then winning it a third time in a row too)

Even more so, wasn't Zidane a midfielder?

There are lots of examples of strikers that have made excellent managers (see above ?), also midfielders, defenders and goalkeepers can be excellent managers. It doesn't matter what position you played when you were playing, but how well you understand the game, how clear you can give instructions and how well you understand tactics and how to make the most of what you have available.

Was the thrust of the original article to cast more doubt on the acceptability of Rooney as manager?

If so it has been well and truly debunked. There are many reason why Rooney may make a poor manager, but being a striker isn't one of them.

Successful Scouse managers on the other hand is a less distinguished list. There's um err...
