I'm sure I read somewhere that Crawley will miss 2 tests but he might have made better progress than expected.

Would anyone have Broad AND Anderson?

I think if you were picking your absolute best team then yes.

However, England needs to build its fast-bowling armoury for the Ashes.

There's a good chance we won't keep them both fit so they are likely to be rotated.

Archer is more of a battering ram than a five wickets man.

At some stage Olly Stone will get a go. No use dragging him around the world without picking him.

He's pretty sharp too.

You're probably right. As a Warwickshire man myself, I'd love to see Olly Stone in action.

On a similar note, Chris Woakes is still around, isn't he?

The horses for courses approach is definitely one I'd go with, so much as he was amazing today, I'd rest Anderson for the next one and give him the pink ball game.

On sub-continent pitches you have to have 2 spinners so Bess has to play. 5 wickets and scoring 59 runs in the match can't be sniffed at either. Unless Bess has a shocker in the next couple, I wouldn't consider Moeen Ali at all. Stokes can be a workhorse if you need someone to bowl 10 overs in a row and then go with Archer as your strike bowler and rotate the new ball legends on a fitness/pitch basis.

I'd go:

Burns

Sibley

Lawrence/Crawley if fit, bring him in for test 3 and 4 anyway.

Root

Stokes

Pope

Foakes - Buttler actually kept very well this match and in Sri Lanka, but flies home to rest up now.

Bess

Leach

Broad - play Anderson in the day nighter and bring Broad back for the last test.

Archer - definitely bat him at number 10/11, maybe give Stone his debut in the final test if the series is decided by then...

Woakes is a great player in England, New Zealand etc where there's a bit in the pitch. He's not so suited to India or Australia IMHO. A bit like Curran, he would be in as a bowler who might make a few runs down the order.

I think against the top sides you need to rely on your specialists.

Even Stokes looked pretty ordinary as a bowler and got lucky against Kohli.

I think you are right. But why select Woakes in the first place?

There has to have been more purpose to Woakes' selection than just giving Moeen a lift to the airport.

He's probably Stokes' sub, Moeen is  a Bess replacement.

I was up for work and caught a couple of overs before leaving home.
Simply magnificent! Don’t care how off it the Indians were can’t take an ounce away form that performance. Had radio commentary on way to work to hear a couple of wickets fall. Gives us a proper sporting lift that does. Three days and we go again. Harmmy and Goughy were radio experts. Great listening to their enthusiasm too. Anderson and Broad getting better with age, we have a cracking team just now despite deficiencies opening. Can’t always rely on Roots efforts. Round Two!!!

I’ve been up at four for all five days.

I’m really looking forward to a lie-in til 6 tomorrow!

Harmy and Goughy were both moaning that Anderson should have started instead of Archer this morning whereas England had already agreed that the ball wasn’t ready to reverse from the start so Jimmy would come on later.

Think the experts got that one wrong and Rooty got it right.

Didn't realise there was a cricket thread on here! What a game that last match was. Woke in the middle of the night on Tuesday morning, put Channel 4 on my phone and first ball I was Jimmy sending Rahane packing.

I was cautiously optimistic of England making a series of it with Root in such good form. Now we are in with a chance of winning it.

On Jimmy, he looks like he can on for a few more years, especially with rotation policy coming in more.

The rotation policy is an interesting development too. For ever test cricket has always been about playing your best team as much as possible so the players find form. Perhaps the extra freshness of rotation outweighs the form factor, especially for bowlers.  Enforced rotation didn't do India any harm vs a stable Aussie team recently. And didn't the Aussies rotate bowlers when they won over here 2 years ago?

Those views of Chennei and the ocean really made me dream of going to India for some cricket. Has anyone ever been to matches there?

Or Broad and Stone. Stone is the like for like replacement in terms of pace.

They have stuck to their guns so far in selection and said they would alternate Broad and Anderson.

As you say Jimmy gets a rest. Cant wait for this one.
This rotation policy seems like self harm. Scary going without Buttler and Bairstow - you can normally rely on one of them for a score and they both have good (albeit white ball) experience in India. Our top order still unreliable and if Root fails we could be in a right pickle.
So a lot rests on Moeem. Lots of press saying it’s harsh to drop Bess after his 4 wkts haul but he was gifted a few and in the second he was pretty poor. Big qn is whether our spinners are good enough to win this series
Massive toss to win - and will India be able to manufacture a pitch that better suits them... ?

Don't want to put the kibosh on him but Foakes is a really good keeper and a top order batsman. A worthy replacement.

Really hope Stone plays but at 1-0 up they might favour Woakes ' batting.
