When I was working in the NHS, we had to advertise senior medical jobs in European journals before we could go elsewhere, even if we knew that a particular specialist role could only be recruited from say North America. Even when we did get an applicant from outside of Europe, the hoops we had to jump through before the individual was granted a work permit meant long delays before we got the person in post. As such, many patients had their treatment delayed because of the EU rules applicable to the UK. It’s always been a question in my mind how so many non-Europeans seem to be able to ‘work’ in the Premiership and lower leagues apparently without the same restrictions/conditions.

Those restrictions aren't EU rules though, the restriction is that the UK visa rules require that the job is advertised for so many days before being able to sponsor the position. By virtue of EU citizens being able to work freely this is extended to proving that no one in the EU will fill the position.

The EU has no say on UK visa policy. The UK could waive the waiting period but they don't because of their immigration target. UK visa service is a joke and takes long by design. I got a work visa for India in 5 days whilst in the UK that would take literally months to process.

The rules for sponsorship for non eu footballers is actually really transparent. Premier league explains it in more detail here https://www.premierleague.com/news/597662 but essentially depending what country you come from there are slightly different rules. Players from Brazil have different requirements than players from lower ranked international teams but its related to how many appearances you make for the national team over the preceeding years. Also worth bearing in mind that loads of south Americans have Italian, Spanish and Portuguese passports.

It's hilarious isn't it. All the leave voters are so thick.

Someone posted a chart to show how people from the 2 higher social classes voted remain in higher numbers, whereas more people in the lower 2 social classes voted leave.

People in the lower 2 social classes are thicker*, so you are broadly correct.

* I don't actually think that, but the way Tories have treated poorer people over the last 9 years suggests they think they are thick. And worthless. Let's just hope Corbyn and his elitest mates don't get in though. They are the real problem.

It amuses me that a good number of the Socialists on here seem to keep sniping at leavers as being thick or racist, where a high majority of leavers are poor or from the ‘working classes’. You would think they might be a bit more supportive, but perhaps all that Champagne gives them muddled thinking.

Not sure you having been keeping up. The leavers keep going back to 'remainers say we are all thick and racist'. The then socialists humour them.

I'd rather the champagne socialists in power though than the champagne 'far-right poor-hating racist-and-bigoted actual-elitists' like Johnson, Farage etc.

Let's stick it to the man by voting for the man. That'll teach them.

Leavers aren't all racist. But lots of the Leave campaign was racist and xenophobic.

Examples please.

And virtually all of the racists and xenophobes voted leave. Prove me wrong.

Surely it is up to you to provide evidence to back up such a claim.

Wealthy middle classes telling educated working class lads how to vote and think.

Like actual politicians some of this lot.

Or maybe just people debating politics and ideas.

Quite a few people on this thread have talked about their personal situation/wealth and there seems little correlation between voting left or right/leave or remain and been richer or poorer.

Maybe a more interesting debate is whether 'working class' or 'middle class' even mean anything.

Take my wife's dad for example. He grew up in East End in 50s, 6 of them living in a tiny flat. Parents died at about 60, did manual jobs.

He got a job as apprentice after going to a secondary modern school. Worked hard at his company and moved up. Took voluntary redundancy around 1980s and used money to set up own business with colleagues. Retired about 20 years ago and lives in big house in the home counties and has a place in Spain too.

Is he working class? Middle class? Upper class? He wasn't particularly well educated, at least in terms of academic subjects. Is he a champagne socialist? He's more Tory than Labour. He voted Remain, but mostly cos he was worried the economy would be screwed up. How would you pigeon-hole him @Norman?

Totally disagree the EU referendum was to solve the in or out EU question for a generation winner takes all the so country can more forward on which ever direction the people decided.

I expected everyone to accept the result whatever the outcome I am truly shocked at people in this country who think the have the right to overturn the referendum.

If remain had won I would have accepted the result.

I accepted the result. I do not accept a no deal Brexit though.

I would say you try and tell working class people what being working class is like, and you have no ducking idea.

Apart from your mum telling you some stories.

I await your post to enlighten us all on what working class is like.
