ref having a shocker. It wasn't a pen (outside area) or a red (defenders covering) but how it's not a foul is beyond me

He'll be better 2nd half when we put him in the nets and push Wildsmith up front.

I doubt ghosts are real as we identify them. Unfortunately for us the dead don't talk.  I do wonder if what we imagine are ghosts are in reality some small cracks in time and space rather than a purely psychological phenomenon. But I know little about either subject so it's the most wild speculation from me.

It's a result of having slow CBs, the two wide players being instructed to play as wingers, and all three CMs being encouraged to attack. The balance isn't there.

The problem with this question is that it's entirely contextual. If you have a squad that's built for a direct style of play then playing a short passing game won't work as it will inevitably break down. If you have a squad that is built for a short passing style and a slower transition then it doesn't make much sense to go direct and bypass your better players. Direct teams can be successful, look at Warnock's Cardiff City for instance a few seasons ago and even our team under Rowett who used a quicker transition style. So I'm not against direct teams on principle.
What frustrated me against Port Vale was Warne's set up that didn't appear to reflect the strengths of our team. Playing 3-5-2 with two wingers made us defensively fragile on both the wings especially as NML seems to have poor concentration, from crosses (when stretched out in transition our box lacked good headers of the ball) and neutered our attacking strengths too. Rather than Warne adapting to the squad conditions at derby as he said he would, instead he seemed to bring Rotherham with him. Personally, I think if it continues in that vein the experiment is heading for failure.

I'm torn on this tbh. One thing is for certain is that it's not okay to take payment and not deliver on the product and not offer up a refund. It seems to be an increasingly common thing that some self-promoting people are doing (see the allegations about Jack Monroe if you go up a level) and it shouldn't be happening.

On the following around of the Clough's from club to club in some ways I understand it in other ways I really don't. If someone has fallen out with you because of your bad behavior and they say'sorry but I don't really want to talk to you anymore' my opinion is you have to respect that wish and walk away. No matter how difficult and painful you find that decision. I understand the temptation to try and rekindle the relationship or keep it going from a distance but if I was Nigel I probably wouldn't really appreciate this.

I'm also not the biggest fan of 'selling the story'. Yes it feels life defining for him (which in its own way I find slightly sad) but surely there's an ethical question of putting out there what was an intensely personal, emotional and private experience in a book? I think if he wanted to write a book there would be a fantastic one on the general lessons and arc of his experiences that could have been made into a cracking novel. But without the consent of the Clough family (am never sure if he got that) writing this kind of book just seems kind of wrong. It also appears slightly sleazy to be profiting of such a story rather than perhaps using it as a deeply personal fable of actions and consequences.

Barkhuizen and Laing will be off in January as they can't play this formation effectively.  At the minute Barkhuizen is playing with the wrong foot in a position he openly stated he didn't like playing for Preston when he came here.  Laing is an out and out winger .  His effectiveness has notably dropped playing this formation, where he's advancing over the half way line rather than starting further forward.

I was in a very good mood as I had just passed my viva exam for my PhD.. but I am sorry that was absolutely shocking from almost start to finish. Playing a 3-5-2 is absolutely bizarre with the players we have available and I'm sorry but playing direct with bird and hourihane in  midfield who's bright idea was that?  We asked port vale onto us trying to kill them onto the counter and ultimately even though the ref was shocking we got our just desserts. We're derby county, at home in front of 29,000 people and asking a recent promoted team from the 4th division to attack us so we can nick a couple via speed, it's an absolute fu**ing embarrassment.
Anytime they got the ball down any wide area they looked dangerous, any time they dared to press they looked dangerous, any time they lumped the ball into the box they looked dangerous. This is not because they are good but because of the ridiculous formation, style and pressing mechanisms we used throughout the game. If this is the Warne revolution as far as I'm concerned I want to show him the door and give him back to Rotherham right now. It stank of defensive, stilted play that I'd expect of a team playing unfashionable 3rd division football. I fu**ing hated every moment.  Why anyone wanted this guy beyond his personality and interview style is beyond me... he's a typical 3rd division manager with about as much imagination as a stunted man child when it comes to how to play the game as demonstrated today.

Lived in derby but my family didn't go to football because of the trouble in the 80's. They were from lincolnshire but my great uncle always  supported derby. Went to one game when I was 8 against Barcelona, then used someone's season ticket for the league by xmas we'd been multiple times, got half season tickets and never looked back. It's a life of pain but i wouldn't trade it for anything in the world.

I like the kit and the gesture is fine but it's only slightly more than doing absolutely nothing. Personally am not sure how FA's and players including our own can actually go to this world cup given all the gestures towards social justice they've made. It just shows it up for the performative farce it is. As soon as it would impact them in the slightest way the shoulder shrugging comes out and no stance is actually taken.

I'll be brief in response as it's my birthday today ? Well it's not always a matter of perspective, there are facts that exist and realities outside of ideological construction. Statements such as "the US created Al-Qaeda" aren't really a matter of perspective it's a specific claim and it's a false one. It's generally committed by those who confuse the Mujaheddin of Afghanistan, the Taliban and Al-Qaeda together as one homogeneous entity rather than individualised groups. It's a common error but it's an error nevertheless.

On Syria I find the idea of supposed 'US destablisation' as an idea unconvincing. It denies the organic nature of the protests and the domestic reasons and uprisings that tied in to broader protests across the region but had specific reasons. It ignores the Assad's regime's actions that created the conditions from a domestic peaceful uprising into a civil war that de-stabalised not just Syria but also Iraq. It also ignores the fact the US didn't have much of a role to play compared to the numerous regional actors that got and remain involved. Reliable authors who cover the region such as Shadi Hamid, Christopher Phillips, Charles Lister and Rania Abouzeid  highlight both the US's lack of knowledge about the key players even after over a year into the civil war (the description of the Istanbul room meetings in 'no turning back' is especially instructive) and their comparatively small role in the conflict. If you're talking about the Arab Springs more generally, someone again like Shadi Hamid has a lot to say about the lack of support for the democratic uprisings by America and willingness to look the other way, especially in relationship to Egypt.

They're only contradictory if you think that struggling in Ukraine necessarily means Russia isn't also able to threaten or signal to other countries. We've seen them do this with numerous countries seeking to join NATO, so it's no issue to point out they're using a similar playbook with Moldova as they've done in the past. It just points to the chaotic and dubious geopolitical logic that is going on and not something I consider to be unique to Russia necessarily but maybe even highlights their current vulnerability (some monsters lash out most viciously when injured).

Yeah, I don't mind disagreeing at all. I get that at time the tone I use can come across as confrontational, it's one of the reasons I don't always love using boards to discuss politics as the inability to register emotion is a problem. Because I can write in a very dry, clear cut manner that can come across as scolding or annoyed. But that doesn't reflect how I actually feel (enjoying different discussions with others even when I strongly disagree). My best friends in at my uni offices are people with which I share absolutely 0 political opinions with, when we discuss politics in person we have a smile and a laugh rather than having an intemperate argument.
