You forgot Clough 1968/9 Div 2 Black & 1946 Cup Final Black & the best kit of all the Jim Smith Puma ensemble.

If Jim's team had played in blue and white, we'd have beaten West Ham, qualified for Europe, doubled our income and had enough cash to maintain our top 6 status into the Premier League era.

We didn't build on our post war success and gradually dropped into the 3rd Division North because we were carrying the albatross of black shorts.

Brian Clough quickly realised that his genius was being limited by those shorts and changed them. Suddenly we were the best in the country and only a bent ref away from being the best in Europe.

Do we want Colin Todd, Archie Gemmil and Kevin Hector or Claude Davies, Bob Malcolm and Robert Earnshaw?

I wonder how far people would be willing to step away from tradition?

You sometimes see teams who play in stripes stray away from that. Southampton’s new kit, Sheffield Wednesday did too recently.

I wonder what the reaction would be like if we went for black and stripes, black and white halves, or just more black in general with a band across the midriff or black sleeves?

There’s only so much that can be done with a black and white shirt each year.

I see where you're coming from. Base the shirt onimage.thumb.png.0c6951e7f3afbb3fa2017cfeb8792f10.png St Piran's Flag.

Based on what Warne got out of last year's squad this approach would fill me with dread.  I'm very much of the opinion that we need to be bringing in more effective players than we had last season to improve on our 7th placed finish.  Based on names suggested by other posters there appear to be plenty of decent league one and even championship players who will be out of contract.  If we can unearth a gem from Scotland, Ireland or non-league then great but I'd be gutted if that was all we were trying to achieve this window.

I believe you are going to very disappointed over the next few weeks. We are still suffering from going into administration, so we are simply not in a position to sign proven players who fit the manager's profile.

Personally, I think we have manager who has gained 3 promotions with squads assembled on a shoe string. I don't think we need big names.

  4. I'd imagine that all of our signings in this window will look underwhelming. We're a League 1 side with restrictions on how much we can spend. We're not going to splash big fees on players where there is competition from Championship or the larger clubs in this division.

Warne also wants athletic players, so we're not going to sign any fading stars with big reputations.

What we will do is make a series of boring looking signings from the Conference, League 2, Scotland and Ireland. I doubt any will be more than 'meh'.

The excitement will come from the recruitment team (hopefully) finding some uncut diamonds and Warne making a whole which is greater than the sum of its parts.

Or three of those and Roberts. Allows Sibley to play further forward with McGoldrick. Please.

I think Sibley is better at left back. He's an adequate defender, but offers a lot to the attack. I also think that McGoldrick and Knight are better 10s than Sibley.

Roberts is a better defender than Sibley, but more static. That invites pressure down that side and makes us disjointed. I think the defence as a whole is better with Sibley,  although he will get 'done' on occasions where Roberts wouldn't, but it's the whole 'attack is the best form of defence ' thing.

  6. The problem on Saturday looked to stem from Curtis to me. He was leading the defensive line and we were a 15 yards deeper than normal. The midfield also dropped, which left the 3 in no man's land and Collins isolated.  We were too deep to press effectively so gifted them possession.

It also meant we had to go long and that failed because they had a huge height advantage. We should go back to Smith, Fozzy, Cashin and Sibley as the back 4. The rest will then fall back into place.

  7. That looks to be a good plan. Do our bit for the planet and save some cash in the medium term. With hands as safe as these, I'm guessing David Clowes was a decent goalkeeper in his youth.

On a stadium related tangent. Does anyone know why there were quite a few seats taped off at the front of the East Stand on Saturday?

  8. I wonder if he'd be better playing as a central defensive midfielder long term? I'm a big fan and think he has the class to play in the Premier League, but I reckon his lack of height will prevent him from getting there as a centre back.

If he moved slightly further forward, or even developed as a specialist sweeper, that wouldn't matter and his natural ability and fabulous attitude could gain the rewards they deserve.

    1. Was it not possible to appoint Warne during the summer so that he could assemble the squad that he would have wanted? No

2.Did Warne assure him that he could work with the current squad or is he expecting a lot of trading during upcoming transfer windows? (And follow up: how frustrating would that be?). Yes, and second, 'a few new faces'

    3. Does he and Warne put much emphasis on the Academy, including recruitment of young talent and Category 1 status? Yes

    4. Was the aim promotion this season or, given Warne's 4 year contract, the bigger picture is the Derby County rebuild with promotion as and when it happens? Rebuild stability

    5. Are targets - e.g. regarding league position, academy graduates breaking into the first team - being set? Yes

6.Onto more general things: over what timescales does he see himself as the owner? Having been reluctant in the first instance, would he be looking to sell? Soon? In the Championship? In the Premier League? Impossible to tell

    7. Given Warne's title is Head Coach rather than Manager, will the club be appointing a Director of Football to oversee transfers, playing strategies etc? No.

@Taribo giving very definite answers here.

Has @IslandExile just outed our owner's username?

  10. Having watched it back, I think it was a red. Collins punched the floor and caught their player in the nose with his elbow.

Impossible to know if there was intent, but it was properly stupid to throw a punch when lying on top of a opponent. He was bound to make contact, and contact was bound to be a red.

As soon as we went down to 10 men against their 12 we were in trouble.

Interesting for their first penalty, the West Stand linesman flagged for a corner, which the ref overruled. After that, the linesman didn't flag for anything until the ref had made a decision. I think the linesman thought that the ref was incompetent and wanted to keep out of it.

    Pendulum!

    Of course!  That's it!
By jove, @Skin em Ted, I think you've cracked it!

If he won't bounce, maybe, just maybe...

Paul Warne, Paul Warne, start the swing.  Paul Warne, start the swing... oohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh...

I'm feeling the man love for Warne as much as the next man, but I'm not sure I'd be too keen to view his swnging activities.?

  12. I admit that I usually feel blindly optimistic when we get a new manager. This time is no exception.

The only slight difference is that Paul Warne had indicated that he'll do exactly the things I would do as a manager. I now have this vision of this being a game of Football Manager played out in reality, where I'm the boss.

The only worry is, when I play 352, work on fitness, get the ball forward quickly, press high, get regular crosses in and orchestrate clever set piece routines, I lose most games and get sacked before Christmas.
