No team has an average of 20 shots and an average of 0 goals over a season. Not in the history of football. I'd challenge any team to find one.
It is impossible for this to continue. One of two things will happen; 1.) the chances will dry up completely or 2.) we start putting them away.
At present, short of putting on his boots and finding the net himself, I'm not sure what Liam Rosenior can do other than convince his players the goals will come. Some saying it's a psychological issue but personally I'm skeptical that Collins is missing the goal due to some unresolved childhood trauma.
If the first scenario does happen, it's a coaching issue and then it would be time to look elsewhere.
There's lots of reasons to be optimistic that number 2 will happen. Those saying "it's the same story as last season" is only true in the fact we're not scoring goals. Last season, we only really scored and looked competitive against footballing sides with a high-press, where we'd create very high quality chances and would see clinical finishing. This season, we're also able to create chances against sides with a low block, but we can't hit a barn door with a banjo.
Let's not forget, we're out of administration, but we're still a club laden with debt. Keeping CKR or signing another striker is one obvious solution to what's happening. You cannot blame Rosenior for that.

Overall feeling today: incredibly frustrated not to score, feels like a loss to be so dominant and come away with a point. I'd have sighed some relief at a score draw, at least get a monkey off our back that way. I'll be chilled if sort this out next away game, will be pretty concerning if we repeat again. For instance if we continue to chalk up 10-15 corners every away game and get no goals, you start to have to ask questions if it is just luck, or you're not doing enough to force it in.
If it makes you feel any better, over the past 10 seasons of Premier League football, only 3.4% of corners result in a goal. So even if we were matching the best teams in the country, we perhaps could only expect a goal from a corner once every 3 or 4 games with an average of 12 corners, if that makes you feel better.

Are you forgetting last season with Liam as coach..same system.. and we lost 9 away games on the bounce and we hardly scored a goal.Deja Vu?
I asked if anyone could remember a Derby side this wasteful in front of goal. Not sure last season sprints to mind.

Amazing that only a matter of weeks ago we were days, possibly hours from being wiped from the face of the earth, we’re still in enormous debt and yet some fans are saying we should go out and buy a striker like we’ve magically turned into a normal football club again.
-
Can you think of a Derby side that created so many chances over an entire season and failed to convert them? I can only think of 04/05 where we hit the woodwork 15 times but even then we finished 4th.
My point is nobody is this wasteful for long. Either we start scoring or the chances dry up altogether, but this, this does not last an entire season.

Football evolves. When it first started the standard formation was basically 1-9, and everyone marched down the pitch passing from side to side, sort of like rugby. It must have been absolutely revolutionary when the Klopp of the day invented the idea of a midfield.
That was partially due to the offside rule as well, where the forward had to be behind (not in line with) the third player, not the second. Because the rule favoured the defending team so heavily, it made sense to just pile attackers forward.

Really frustrating time to concede. The introduction of Smith and the patience with the ball with the back 5 finally wrestled some control in this half, and gave us a platform to build from where we missed a gilt-edged chance to completely kill the game. Wouldn’t say the goal was against the run of play, but the tide was turning.

FFS. Rosenior takes Sibley off for Smith. We're going to defend for the final 40 minutes.
I don’t see it that way, Sibley was blowing cold. More likely to keep the ball with Smith.

This passing at the back is all well and good if there is some point to it?
We’re 2-0 up and were letting Barnsley back into the game. I think it’s the first sign of match management this half, no complaints from me.

Think ref has lost the plot a bit, out of his depth.
Sadly, in the third tier, I worry that this standard of officiating is the depth.

They better get used to it, because we clearly have a style of play that’s working. Early days, but already effective.
Goes with the territory of playing that well. Even elite sides concede a few goals a season making a mistake playing out from the back. But there’s a reason they carry on doing it.

It’s been a bit strange. Derby haven’t been 2-0 better than Barnsley.
The first goal came out of nothing and then Barnsley had a 10-minute spell where they looked quite dangerous.
But our second goal just showed the level. Hourihane’s passing is too good for this league. Great turn of pace and composure from Barkhuizen, and a decent finish from NML.
We were better after the drinks break.
Cashin has been sublime.
We’re creating chances to create chances and squandering them because it’s not clicking - passes being played into empty channels, players being in space and ignored, crossing to the wrong post etc. We can be better than this - if it clicks.

I don’t enjoy piling on the pressure like this. The owner has said very little, but in one of his few public interviews he said he wants three things for Derby: “stability, integrity and progress.”
If we start marking comparisons with the 1980s or mid 90s, then there’s a danger that this becomes our measure of success. This, despite the owner saying it’s not.
We need stability and to steady the ship. I think a better comparison is with our time under GSE.

Surprised Rolls Royce haven’t done it before. There must be a huge untapped market of football fans unsure of where to buy their jet engines from who would surely be swayed by seeing the logo on the shirts of a third tier club on ITV4. Especially seeing as Rolls Royce is a brand virtually nobody has heard of before.

Why would I need to when for the 90th time I didn't mention how many chances we created last season read for god sake , I said GOALS you know them things where the ball goes in the net? We didn't do it last year or the year before or the year before and haven't looked like doing it in the 2 games so far other than one moment of magic from hourihane , if you mention chances created again I'm going to headbutt my greenhouse
You offered an opinion and have been challenged on it, the basic premise of the challenge being that, as you quite rightly say, we haven't been able to score enough goals (and, as many of us have noticed, this has resulted in us being relegated), largely because we haven't created anything. You started sharing your opinion by wondering if our players practice shooting, implying that failing to score over those few seasons is due to poor finishing.
If you find yourself headbutting your greenhouse over people trying to debate with you (which is the whole point of the forum), perhaps it's worth remembering we're critiquing your points, not you.

An off day ? we've been having them for years lay off the strong beers and stick to carling
I've had loads of strong beers too and my memory is failing me. Can you remind me of the games last season where we created as many clear-cut chances as today and missed them?

No if we continue to be poor at finishing we lose this 10 times out of 10 , unless we all of a sudden become ok at shooting for the first time since the mclaren days then I don't see how we win 7 in 10 ?♂️
You make it sound like we were relegated missing gilt-edged chances left, right and centre. Under Cocu we were lucky to get a shot at goal at all and last season, we struggled to create even when we played well.
Missing easy chances is a problem, but it's a new one.
In this game specifically.

Have any of our players ever practised finishing in training? It's really not hard to get a shot on target wether its a good shot or not , we were the 4th worst for scoring goals last year and I can't see where the the goals will come from this year, haven't enjoyed watching us for years other than for atmosphere live but I still keep going , I thought I'd be grateful to watch us this year after all that has happened but I can't stand watching them still , no passion in the team they walk off laughing and joking after that 90 mins , sad times for me
Finally, a measured response.

It was one of those games where if Collins scores that early chance, we go on to win comfortably.
Away from home, no matter what league, you just can’t afford to squander easy chances.
Completely agree with this.
Never understood the qualifier "at this level..." before saying something like "you've got to take your chances." How many leagues do you have to drop before it's not a massive issue if you miss the goal when you're trying to score?

Only 3% of corners end up in a goal. Being good at them is a marginal gain - perhaps it might add the odd point, or change your GD, but if you’re looking to add goals there’s much lower hanging fruit.
It’s strange we get so excited about corners in England when only about 1 in 30+ result in a goal.
