The key thing is a lot of out players are versatile so we can adapt in a short-term injury crisis.
RB - Smith, Rooney, Chester, Mendez-Laing, Barkhuizen, Knight
LB - Sibley, Roberts, Springett, Forsyth, Barkhuizen, Mendez-Laing
CB - Forsyth, Cashin, Davies, Stearman, Chester, Rooney, Roberts
CM - Bird, Hourihane, Tommo, Knight, Sibley, Smith, Rooney
    AM - Knight, McGoldrick, Sibley
RW/LW - Mendez-Laing, Barkhuizen, Dobbin, Springett, Knight, Sibley
CF - Collins, McGoldrick, Dobbin, Mendez-Laing, Barkhuizen
Any signings will have the squad versatility in mind, and the impact on the team as a whole if we're missing a couple of players who can play in a certain position. Therefore, there can only really be a maximum of 2 more signings unless there's an unexpected departure. They are a CF and RB.
Getting a CF is very important and it would free up McGoldrick's availability to fill in at AM, in the event of Knight being needed elsewhere on the field. A CF who can also play on the wing would be an added bonus, as it would ease the impact of needing to drop a winger into the full back position.
We still don't have a recognised RB, but does it matter? Smith is doing a very good job in that role, but if he's injured it has a big impact on the team as a whole. We'd be forced in to fielding an inexperienced Rooney, hope Chester doesn't get injured (once he's back) or bring one of Knight/Mendez-Laing/Barkhuizen in to that position - a move which weakens our forward options. Getting someone in to be backup to Smith, would be difficult, so it would have to be someone who can also fill in at CB and/or LB.

We had a pacey option down the centre (Osula), and we never really used him, because he couldn't do anything else that a modern striker needs to do. He was quick, and he could dribble and finish, and that was about it.
We mainly are playing 1 up front, and even when we play Collins and McGoldrick together, they're far from a traditional front 2.  So any striker we bring in has to be able to play as a lone striker, which means they have to be able to do at least a few out of: being a physical presence up front, occupying defenders, holding the ball up, linking the play, winning headers etc.  Otherwise you're basically toothless up front and your entire system doesn't work.  There's a reason why small, quick strikers (think Michael Owen, Jermaine Defoe types) barely exist in modern football (as regular starters anyway) - they can't play up front on their own, and if you play a front 2, you get outnumbered somewhere else.
So if we want a pacey option, we're looking at Ivan Toney types - big, strong, physical and quick at the same time.  And good luck finding one of those for free in January.  Any player that's big, strong and quick and can score goals is going to be playing regular football somewhere already.
And for what it's worth, we have bags of pace in the team already - 4 quick wingers, and the likes of Knight and Sibley breaking from deeper.  What we need is craft in the final third (i.e. someone to actually play passes or create opportunities for those guys).  We only really have McGoldrick, plus Bird and Hourihane from deeper.  A striker that can either hold the ball up, or drop off and play passes, would make a much bigger difference than another guy that can run quickly.

I’ve changed my thinking on the potential recruitment and think one player who can cover the central or wide forward positions (such as Waghorn) may well be enough to see us through, unless there’s an absolute gem to be had who would improve on what we’ve got.
The goalkeeping dept seems well stocked and there is the emergency loan option for this one position if the situation became a problem.
The current back 4 is picking itself with Roberts, Davies, Stearman, Chester, Rooney, Knight and Oduroh all capable of covering if and when needed and with varying levels of desperation.
We’ve got cover and options in midfield if Bird, Hourihane or Knight can’t play. Thompson can come in, Rooney can play there, put someone in at right back or left back to move Sibley or Smith in as cover etc.
If we stick with one central forward you can alternate McGoldrick and Collins then Barkhuizen, Dobbin or NML could cover if desperate but that’s the main area of the pitch I’d worry about the options if injury or suspension take their toll. Only having NML on the bench against Barnsley sort of highlighted that. Again there are options with Sibley and Knight being deployed further forward if needed in desperate times…so yeah, I think to keep the balance and happiness within the squad 1 or at a push 2 new bodies is all we need in an immediate sense, as realistically we’re not going to be able to compete for anyone who massively improves on what we’ve got in this window.

I think automatic promotion is a bridge too far, personally.
Plymouth are trending for over 100 points. Sheffield Wednesday and Ipswich are on course for 90-95 points too, maybe more.
I don’t think we’re worse than any of those three. I think we are on a par, but we’ve left ourselves with too much work to do. To their credit, those teams have been so consistent from the very beginning.
The gulf in quality between the top three and teams outside the top 10 is so vast that they will be able to maintain good enough form to keep themselves out of reach, especially given they all had a head start on us by the time Warne arrived and especially while Warne and the team got to grips with each other.
I think all three teams above us are capable of a wobble, but it would have to be a massive capitulation for any one of them to let us in. We would probably also have to be by far and away the best and most consistent side in the division for the rest of the season to give ourselves a chance.
We would need at least 50 points from our remaining 22 games to simply make it interesting and put ourselves in the conversation. That’s averaging 2.27 points per game and probably 15 wins required at a minimum!
By all means, internally, we should push ourselves and set ourselves the target of finishing as strongly as possible and as high  up the table as possible.
But realistically, we have to be happy with finishing in a play off spot as comfortably and as painlessly as possible and setting ourselves up for another big day out.
I’d take a McGoldrick special and 42,000 of us dancing on Wembley Way some 12 months after being on the brink of extinction, wouldn’t you?

I can’t believe some of the stuff on here lately!

Whats kept this club going over the last eighteen months has been the relationship between the supporters the different management teams and the encouragement towards players, the all in this together, never give up, fight to the end attitude that has served us well unfortunately seems to be disappearing fast.
I will not criticise Rosenior or any player that decided to stay or sign for this club in extraordinary times.
Considering that just a few months back we were on the verge of folding then handing the club to Kirchner, had five players under contract, were scouring the leagues for loan kids, ageing players out of contract and had no pre season the performances so far are to quote a well known ex manager of this famous football club “nothing short of remarkable”.

Of course I’m down, who isn’t. That post loss tristesse lasts for at least 3 days. The weight of the world is on your shoulders. We got F all. We want to win every game. The style doesn’t seem great either, it doesn’t seem right that ageing wingers are being asked to cover the whole length of the pitch. Yes some “glooms are to be expected.
Yet .. we lost by one goal, away, to one of the leading teams. We have a new manager with limited resources. There’s a whole lot going on behind the scenes. I don’t think for a minute PW isn’t aware of our weaknesses and doesn’t have a plan to address them.
We need to have some faith and some loyalty. It’s way too early to judge anything. For me, it s on to the next game and quite simply .. come on lads, you can do better. UTR !

They all looked very young - as to be expected from the change of format. I watched until they equalised and then could see no other outcome so switched off. Some good 'flickers' of play from many but quite obviously struggled with the 'play it out from the back' style that hopefully will soon be replaced.
